Hi confused

Im a foreign medical grad from INDIA with 99 in both step 1 and 2. I also passed my cs and now started preparing for step3. I have 5 months of USCE with one letter of LOR from the states. I have a lot of aspiration about getting into the best IM programs but the limitation is my visa. I require H1 and most of these top universities donot sponser H1. would J1 be a good idea???? and how about prelim position for one year so that I can get into some top programs with a H1 transfer??? Your advice is greatly appreciated.........any list of good universities or community affiliated uni hospitals would be of a great help to me.

i dont think u can transfer from j1-h1

Once you have accepted a J-1 visa, you cannot change to a H1b visa. If you are looking for a fellowship following IM residency, then the J-1 visa is the visa you should start residency with.

Good luck

Thanks a lot for replying bbb and dev, but i am sorry that i have to bother you with another question, do they sponser h1 visas for preliminary positions? Can i apply to both preliminary and categorical positions in the same program?

  #5

Different programs will have different rules. Here, we will only sponsor an H1b for a preliminary spot if they are continuing on in the hospital and that following program is will to pay for 1/2 the visa.

The visas run the hospital about $1500 apiece, an applicant is not supposed to have to pay it, and if you are going to have 10 people with this visa, it will take a chunk out of the budget for the year.

Yes, you can apply for both tracks of a program.

Best of luck.

hi bbb,

i did not get the point of accepting a j1 visa for a fellowship plan after residency?

can't we do fellowship if we try for H1 visa?

thanx for ur time

  #7

Fewer fellowship programs accept persons on H1b visas. You might have a better chance for fellowship on a J1 visa.

Good luck

but J1 visa says you have to go back to ur home country for 2 years?

does that mean after residency or after fellowship?

thanks for your time in such busy schedule you might be having.

hi bbb

Thanks a lot. U are a lot of help to all of us. I applied to about 33 IM programs. already got a rejection from henryford...that was disappointing...I really cant understand what these programs look for..Scores?? USCE?? visa?? when can I expect invitations???

hey guys give poor BBB some rest..u all fire questions at her but one should spend some time looking for answers too.

To 99 doc.....J1 visa is valid for 7 years..residency is for 3 years..fellowship is another 3 years so one can do their residency as well as fellowship on J1 visa b4 one leaves US..BUT there are some waivers available where one has to work in underserved areas[ dont ask me what r those]..upon getting waiver then i think one has to apply for H1 again n then GC n stuff.....phew!!! long process..hope this helps..good luck

To hunt....dude ur hunt for residency has just begun..don't press panic button too soon......believe me u r not the only one who got rejected by henry ford..they rejected most of IMG's with no reason...i think its their loss...lol

a lot depends upon ur application..ur scores..ur grad. year..ur USCE..ur PS..programs r reviewing applications..interviews will start coming from next week n hopefully they last for the month of november too..hope this helps..good luck

To BBB---- i hope u dont mind if i answered these questions instead of u coz i know the kids were asking u...just trying to lift some burden off ur shouldersnod how is simba doing?wink

grin The only thing that I can add is that programs receive thousands of applications and there is no way to interview everyone. I'm certain that programs skip over excellent applicants every year, but for 12 positions and 1500 applications, and the capacity to interview 100 candidates - well......

Yup, it does stink.disapproval

And Simba is fine - thank you for asking. She hasn't taken on a tiger lately.
