it is a big issue for me-to keep myself motivated.

when i'm in the right condition for studying-can do so much in one day!and there're some days(actually a lot of them)-when all i want to do is-sleep sleep sleep.tried to make one day completely off the studying-didn't help.

would like to get to know your "methods".

I donīt know Alenka, but that of sleep-sleep-sleep doesnīt look like normal to me. Maybe a good advice would be to try to identify the cause of that, like the "underlying disease". Maybe you feel sad about it, I donīt know if you have some troubles, your environment, your social support, etc. raised eyebrow

i think i have some troubles with myself.....lol

i don't know.chemamr,what's wrong,maybe i have ADHD.....rolling eyes?

  #4

smiling face I donīt think so, it starts before, not at this age. And itīs the opposite (not sleep).

I donīt know what are your troubles my dear alenka, but you have to find which are them. Thatīs true. And solve them.

thank you, chemamr, for your support-i'll try to work on figuring out what my issues are-but in the mean time caffeine will do it,lol.

how many hours of sleep per night is the minimum?

  #6

It depends on each person. I think 8 hours of sleep is good

Oh ya i know what your talking about...I loooooooooooove to sleep. It's my favorite sport. Some days I do get more work done then others...but some days nothing sounds better then a marathon of naps! It's ok, we're young, enjoy a little wink

thanks,nisha-it's very reassuring-to know that i'm not the only one with such "problem".

but how do you deal with it?-i mean when you really-really need to accomplish something fast.

  • Run on the treadmil for 1/2 hour, it'll get your endorphins runnin and oxygen to your brain..ul b awake, happy and concentrate better
  • another thing which really helps me is a cup of black tea (with 1 splenda ofcourse)
  • a cold shower
  • make targets on a piece of paper, eg: have to have read 30 pages in the next hour (when doing rapid review)

..good luck and hope some of my crazy tactics work for u!!

good tips nisha.

In my experience I have done number 1 and it works, really. If you jog like 30 minutes (or less, depending on your physical conditioning) youīll notice that the whole day youīll be with more energy and youīll feel with well-being, strong, eager to do whatever. smiling face

Pranayam ( breathing exercise) is a best yogic technique to decrease anxiety, fatigue and its best way to increase concentration.

hi everyone!

i am trying to get motivated again after taking a long hiatus and soul-searching...

can you tell me how an average study day begins? i quit all my extracurricular activities now so i can focus on my studying again.

i need guidance now, more than ever... how long do you study... where do you go? when to exercise? what snacks to go on..

i know these questions may seem lame... but they are useful for me! good luck everyone!

  #13

Hi alenka:

That exact thing happened to me. Do some exercice daily. You will feel with more energy and your brain will get more O2.

i like watching inspirational movies when i am down- was feeling a little down yesterday and watched this one of my all time favorites called " Men of Honour". awesome movie......

Hi guys, reading all these posts i identified myself. I have the same problem as you Alenka, some days i read, some days i just don't feel like doing anything despite my best efforts.

All i feel like doing is just lie down on the couch, and before i realize the day is over, and then I feel guilty about how the day was wasted. The exercise idea sounds like it could work. I tried it for a few days, but somedays it find it very hard to motivate myself.

But we have to help ourselves. Encouraging words from friends who are in the same situation as we are can really help boost our morale. So together let's do it my friends and beat this usmle sucker. Happy studying guys!

that's the problem i've been having for a while, during step 1 exercising or going out for a bit helped, but this tiime all i could do was sleep and sleep and daydream and sleep some more, i just got my flow back yesterday, make sure you take some multivitamins, that's one thing i forgot this time, and take frequent breaks, say like i'll read this chapter and then i'll give myself 5 min to surf the internet or i'll read for 2 hours and then i'll take a walk. or allow yourself to call a friend and chat for a few min after finishing your desired number of pages, this is what i did for step 1 and it helped, i guess i was just to depressed over the match and rejections to focus for the ck.

3 more days and this will just be an unpleasant dreamgrin

good luck with the sleep is yummy syndrome

  #17

Thanks Dia for your advice. I will try taking multivitamins. Looks like a lot of us are in the same boat. The important thing is to stay positive and keep working at it. I know the match process can be intimidating. good luck with that.

I stay motivated by reading this forum and realizing that I might actually be helping someone - one applicant at a time.nod

bbb you are a wonderful motivation in yourself. When we are facing so many obstacles and feeling terrible about being thought of as bottom of the bottom tier, It's great to know that we actually matter enough to have someone take the time out of their busy schedules to try to help us in some way. You rock!!!

  #21

hello guys!

thank you all so much for posting in this thread and sharing your tips-only by realizing that there're a lot of us experiencing the same problem-i'm not feeling one-on-one with this struggle.

you are right,bbb-this forum is so inspirational!

want to share one more tip that i found very helpful-at least for myself-type A+ personality.lol.

there are some days when i try to do my best but all i can accomplish is-few pages in kaplan books.then i decided-the hell with it!-if i can't study-then relax!-watch a movie,go out for dinner, call friends...etc.See-i like to do everything WELL ,so if i can't study WELL -i relax WELL.what point in torturing yourself the entire day just for few pages.if i "torture " myself-i do it well-few chapters, not pages-that's worth it.it gives your brain some time to reset.

did anyone try this approach?

oh,and another thing-befor opening the book and starting reading something-i ask myself-what do i already know about the subject?what is that that i need to find out?-that way you get interested in what you are reading-and the productivity of the studying increases.

so,take this 2 advises-and don't call me in the morining.wink

good luck.

  #22

I'm all about relaxing well!!!!problems start when you start doing that more than studying

and don't forget to keep eating guys...my mom and dad have been on my case forever..I find fruit snacks and granola bars everywhere I go in the house!

hey everyone , i was feeling down today...whenever i am down i watch a couple of my fav movies which inspire me or read some of my fav quotes stacked up inside my daily planner...

sometimes when i want to work hard and i cant , cant concentrate...and thats when i think about all the people around me...anyone one be it the postman or the fire fighters or the school teacher or the paramedic and i see them work with a honesty that needs to be imbibed...it gets me going too...working harder for all the right reasons...its not about how much money w end up with but also about how we live our lives...and if some part of it is for the betterment of everyone around us or not ( with all the knowledge that we amass each day , can we put it to use and make someone suffering lesser or better still save a man's life...and consequently his family )...thats where i want to be and thats what i think about and thats where i am trying and finding some more motivaion today...

i know each one of us here is going to make it and we are all gonna be good in life...and get richer ( if you know what i mean-rich in experience and richer by friends and not just money )...lets work a little more hard today , get some more discipline for all the right reasons and in the end it will make everyone one of us happier and yu bet on it that'll be more satisfying...

good luck everyone...

ps:hey any one of you has ever watched the movie- "remember the titans"....
