Kaplan Qbank USMLE

i recently received my score for step 1. i failed with a 172/71. going into my test i felt really confident i would pass. i had been scoring around 70% on kaplan Qbank and received a 100% on the usmle cd diagnostic 1 week before my exam. when i actually took my test i felt that it was a lot more difficult than any of the Q's i had previously looked at. any advice for passing step 1 would be really appreciated.

I am sorry to hear about that. You should retry it! I was fail on 1st try and I had same score as you have. Did you do nbme test? it has good correlation.

Hi there

Sorry to hear about what happened. Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I really don't think people should base there q-bank score on whether they will pass or not. I think the best predictor is the NBME tests, also doing more questions from now on is ur best bet for round 2. I'm taking the exam in Decemeber myself and have started doing q-bank, but I know that I will do a lot of questions after that. Q-bank is to help me gain more knowledge and let me know where my weak areas are. So what I'm trying to say is don't base ur q-bank score on a whether u will pass or not. NBME and usmle cd are really good predictors on how u will do on the real thing. Okay well all the best and keep ur head up. U were close this one time and so u will pass the next time around. Take care. nod

Got a question for you.. When you did your Qbank your score of 70% , was that on ist try w/ the set of q's or ? try? Did you do it by random nos. or subjectwise?

Also your MLE CD you said you got 100%.

I'm asking about this bec. a kaplan expert said you must score bet. 65-70% on QBank to pass & CD that was 100% & you did not pass? Quite confusing. It's true that we should not look on those scores to see if we'll pass or not but can you Please elaborate more on your statement???

I am not getting a 70% score on my qbank but I diligently study all the explanations right or wrong. Did you take notes of the explanations the first time? If you would pls. answer my queries then you'll find out what went wrong w/ your first try & at the same time you will help us all who will still take the exam.

I am sure everyone or someone would agree w/ me re. my q'.

waiting for ur reply..

so i did the majority of the kaplan q bank but admittedly should have probably done more q's before the big test. the 70% was the average i was receiving on my 50 q block kaplan q bank. i set the q's at random for the 50 Q because i thought this would be more similar to the test. i after each block of 50 i would read the explanations on q's i had gotten correct and incorrect. also, i did take some notes on explanations if i thought i did not know that info thoroughly or that it was something i felt was an important point. i completed the usmle cd 1 week before my actual exam. the last week i decreased my studying a bit and took the day before my test off. i know that i was a bit nervous when i set out on my exam but i found the exam a lot more difficult than the q's i had previously seen. obviously there were still a handful of fairly easy q's but on the overall i felt the test was very difficult and the q's i had done up to that point were not a very good indicator of the difficulty on step 1. i hope this helps some of you. please don't be discouraged by my experience. i know some people who had experiences like myself but plenty who did very well as they believed they would. i think that at some point you do just have to look at your knowledge base and your ability to apply and have faith that in the end you will pass.

hey frogger,

shaking head no,, QBANK cannt tell you where you stand.its learning tool and helps to increse score...I Think its only OVERCONFIDENCE factor which is very dangerous for us.U did well on q bank by making separate notes .Nervousness ,anxiety are very common before exam

hey frogger ,so when you taking step1 now????

hi reet,

i know that qbank isn't the be all and end all of trying to figure out if you are prepared but i had also taken the usmle cd diagnostic and did very well. anyhow, i guess that doesn't matter know but i have to say that before i took step 1 i really did feel like i would pass and with a fair score. i did think i was nervous than i thought i was at the time and maybe that played a part in my unfortunate score but i found the test to be a lot more difficult in it's questions than i had expected. also, three areas that i had studied a lot and had been scoring really well on on qbank turned out to be three of my weakest areas on the test. anyhow, i appreciate your response. so i am planning on taking step 1 again dec. 1 or around there depending on how my studies progress from now until then. i just have found that although i want to focus these next couple of months i am finding that my anxiety over taking the test again is much greater this time around and is slowing my progress. i have been trying to exercise a bit to de-stress.

also, to kerochi, i had posted a message the other day in regards to your q's but i don't see the response. please let me know if i need to reply again.

hope you all are having great study days wink
