I wouldn't worry about brand names of medicines. If the SP will mention something I don't know I'll ask what is he/she taking it for. The checklist for any case on the usmleworld website and FA is about "Doctor asked about this and that," so I guess I'll be ok if I'll just ask about the medicine. Moreover, let's say that one of DD is "side effects of that medicine". How much would this change the DD list or the diagnostic workup list? Not much. You're required to have 5 DDs and 5 diagnostic tests, so I will certainly consider other causes and order the lab tests to eliminate or confirm them. This is what I think but please correct me if I'm wrong.

HI guys.... First post here, but an avid visitor of the forum since 2004.. I took and passed Step 1 and step 2 Ck and took CK on August 20 on ATL. Waiting for the results...

In regards to your original question, I would say that Medication names are not important, for the examination... Just BE SURE to ask the patient what medications is he taking, if you dont get the name right, ask hit to repeat, "would you repeat that again, please?" or parafrase: "uhh.. so you are taking HCTZ to control your high blood pressure" the SP will respond either way. If you don't get it, ask politely to spell it for you: "would you spell it for me, Please?"

Remember, Medical knowledge of sofisticated diseases or treatments is not generally required for the CS... Is your communication Skills and in general the elaboration of a complete H&P what is required to complete the examination.

Congratulation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dr Ruiz. And thanks for ur useful suggestion about CS. Did you attend Kaplan course? What is key for passing cs. I'm IMG & awaiting my ck score(I took on iAug18). I'll sit cs in Mid Oct. Good luck for matching.

Thank you!

Well for the CS I used The Kaplan book and the FA, that was it. I am working as a House Physician in a Hospital in Miami, so my work is basically doing the very same excercise that is tested on the exam.

anyway, the key to pass the exam is to make a mental order of everything you are going to ask so you don't forget. I used the same format we do here at the hospital, there is a form that we have to fill while we do the Admission notes for patients, so with the practice I have learned that form and I have it inside my head.

My suggestion is: Be confident, you have done this before, it is just one more patient, nothing more, nothing less. for us Non native English speakers, speak SLOW, practice with a friend, or a family member, get used to the time you have.

GOOD LUCK!
