can we make a sticky topic for this in this forum (and img support) so that everybody can see it on top?, also if there are any other states that have similar requirements (i hear NJ), can we make a sticky for them ? thanks. for more questions you can call the Med Board of CA and ask there Med Board of CA phone: (916) 263-2382 this is official information about the "Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter" (old name: California Letter) for IMG/FMG the "Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter" (old name: California Letter) IS REQUIRED FOR APPLYING TO CALIFORNIA RESIDENCY. Medical Board of California application for PTAL PTAL APPLICATION & INFORMATION 2005 package -- www.medbd.ca.gov/Applicant_International.pdf Payment online -- www.medbd.ca.gov/Applicant_Addl_Info.htm for those who graduated after 1998 theres 4weeks required in Family Practice 2089.7. (a) The requirement of four weeks of clinical course instruction in family medicine shall apply only to those applicants for licensure who graduate from medical school or a school of osteopathic medicine after May 1, 1998. California Law BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONS CODE about the clerkship number of weeks required www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=bpc&codebody=2089.5&a mp;hits (b) Instruction in the clinical courses shall total a minimum of 72 weeks in length. (c) Instruction in the core clinical courses of surgery, medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and psychiatry shall total a minimum of 40 weeks in length with a minimum of eight weeks instruction in surgery, eight weeks in medicine, six weeks in pediatrics, six weeks in obstetrics and gynecology, a minimum of four weeks in family medicine, and four weeks in psychiatry. (1 week = 32 hours ?) I cant find where it says #hours = 1 week, if someone can find official info on this. You may be able to mix some hours from other clerkships to try and make up, but i have no official info/confirmation. If you DO NOT have enough weeks for the clerkships in medical school, you will receive a deficiency letter with which you go to hospitals and ask them if you can do those missing hours there. (probably will need to buy insurance for this, i dont know) After you apply your application will only be kept for 1 year if you do not complete it (unless you show that you are actively and curently searching for a residency).

i have not got my cali letter yet but i found a list of hospitals that u can get interviews without the letter: Kaiser Permanente MC, Oakland Cali Pacific Med Center, SF San Joaquin Gen Hosp, Stockton Kern MC, Bakersfield West LA VA MC, LA King/DREW MC, LA USSF, Fresno Of course u will have to get the letter later. This is a partial list and double check. This is the same list i got from the download section here. This is just to get an interview. Is it worth applying for a US IMG. I am going into psych.

Yes prego, I have it from my licensing analyst that 1 week=32 hours. Working on completing my deficiencies by taking an externship in psych and ENT ASAP. I'm an IMG from the Philippines working of completing my deficiencies for a PTAL from Medical Board of California. Just wanted to add to the list the hospitals I've been invited so far for an interview: UCSF, Santa Rosa (FM) and Natividad Medical Center, Salinas (FM) My Stats: Step 1 83/CK 85/CS Passed, ECFMG certified, PTAL with deficiencies, no visa required

I eventually went back to my primary hospital back in the Philippines and had 64 hours of Psychiatry externship as required by the California Medical Board. As soon as my analyst got the letter of completion issued by the Dean's Office of my medical school, she promptly sent me my CA letter/PTAL. I finally got my FINAL California Letter/ PTAL (without deficiencies) mid-December. Frankly, when I opened the envelope, I was half expecting it to be in parchment paper and gilded in gold-- for the effort I put into it and for all the money I spent just to get one. What a disappointment to find that it was a regular letter printed in bond paper Hehe... I sent it to ERAS immediately, and they, in turn, immediately lost it somewhere along the road. *SIGH* So after the holidays, I decided to re-send another copy, which they received on time and within 12 hours of receipt, uploaded into their database. Within 24 hours of it getting uploaded, I started receiving more interview invitations... I knew it! That was the only thing those PDs were waiting for No really, I knew they were interested in me all along, I never had any doubts they would ask me to come over eventually Haha! (The truth is, I had already given up on getting more invitations mid-December, but lo and behold, miracles still happen...oh joy, oh joy )

Hi alhambramd I have to say that I'm in total awe after reading all ur posts & ur entire story... & I really pary for u that u r able to get matched into a really good place... all the best! I was wondering what hospitals did u get interview calls from, in the absense of ur CA letter... Could u give me the names of the programs as I'm about to apply for my CA letter in a few days but after reading ur experience, I'm not sure if i can have my letter in time for applying for the 2007 match... I also have another query... Family Medicine is not a defined field in the medical school where I've graduated from.... we do have community medicine, general medicine, emergency medicine, intensive care medicine,... so my letter would be deficient in 4 wks of FP clerkship... now since my medical school doesn't have that field, & trying to get the clerkship n CA would be another impossible task, do u have any idea if FP can be replaced by any other form of medical clerkship like community med or something? Thanks!

Hi aifra! What I did was look up programs in FREIDA and check their websites for application requriements, specifically the "special requriements" some programs have for IMGs. Some programs are pretty straightforward in saying that an application cannot be considered complete (and thus will not be reviewed) until receipt of the final PTAL without deficiencies. If you apply now, and get your papers in ASAP, you might be able to to hear from them by late April or June. And if you have no deficiencies whatsoever, then I'm sure you'll have your PTAL way before the 2007 season opens. Regarding your question about substituting clerkship rotations, I have no idea. You will have to ask a licensing analyst about it (one will be assigned to you after they review your application). Everything really is up to their discretion. I applied to 10 FM programs and 11 IM programs in the vicinity of the San Francisco Bay Area. I got 6 interview invitations. And now that it's mid-February, I guess it's safe to assume I'm not getting any more of them. 1. Sutter Medical Center, Santa Rosa- Santa Rosa, CA; Family Medicine 2. Stanislaus Family Practice- Modesto, CA; Family Medicine 3. Natividad Medical Center FP- Salinas, CA; Family Medicine 4. Alameda Highland Medical Center- Oakland, CA; Internal Medicine Primary Care Track 5. Mercy/Methodist Medical Center- Sacramento, CA; Family Medicine 6. San Joaquin General Hospital- French Camp, CA; Family Medicine Good luck. Dont lose heart, everything will fall into place as God has planned for you, you'll see

as far as i know if u are on h-4,you are not eligible for ssn.and no ssn means you are not eligible for applying in california. those who have g.c,or citizens,or those who are on h-1 or f-1 only have eligibility for ssn and so can apply for ptal. as far as i know h-4's are not eligible for ptal.
