Hello People,

This forum is like an ocean of knowledge for all those wanting to participate in the match .......

Thanks to bbb and cgr2005.........please keep up the good work, we really appreciate your advice..........................

Here is my question and situation................................

I am a foreign medical graduate from India with a green card status.
Here is my situation........
I graduated from Gujarat University in March 2005. I have excellent
academics with 4 gold medals in my medical school, excellent volunteer work
experience in India, though no research experience.

My usmle scores are step 1 99/263, step 2 ck 99/268, step 2 cs pass,
will be ECFMG certified by September end.
I am applying for surgery, that is my first and only preference. I
know that surgery is very competitive for FMGs and so I worked hard to get
excellent scores on USMLE so that at least on that level I am above most if not
all candidates.
However as of today I dont have any USLOR.
So should I start applications right now in ERAS and post only 1 or 2
letters
from India and then later on add my USLOR as i am trying to find an observership right now...(I have the Indian recos in hand)...........
I have all the scores on and my personal statement is ready and want to start applications.
However I am worried that if I send any application with just 1 or 2
recos the programs are not even going to look at it because it is incomplete,
should I communicate with the programs explaining my situation that I shall be
may be getting a USLOR soon......and that is why only 1 or 2 recos instead of
the required number of 3.
Because I think having a USLOR even if late would make an enormous
difference in my applications rather than having 3 Indian LORS with early
application..........
I was thinking to apply to a 100 programs to ensure interviews and a
match
I would be obliged if you could advise me on this matter.

Thank You
Regards,
Sharvil

As long as you think you can get the US LOR before the end of October or as late as mid-Nov, then I would sit tight and wait for that letter to come in. If you think that's risky, then apply based on your current letters.

I don't think you'll need to apply to anything close to 100 programs. You should be able to limit yourself to 25 or so, and work from there, but I admit that it can be unpredictable.

Thanks for your kind words. Appreciated.

thanks cgr2005.........

surgery can be unpredictable and i dont want to take chances and waste a year in some crazy place or worse not match at all and then go on in the post match madness...........

i think i will send my application with 2 home country LORs by september end and then add on a US Lor when i get it at end of october sometime............or maybe put in all 3 home country LORs right now and then deassign one letter and add a USLOR instead....

what do you think of the idea,

sharvil

hey sharvil, you have excellent scores, im interested to know how many interviews you get and if you match in a categorical postion.Im applying to surgery next match. My score is not as high (step 1 only 99/248) but I have USCE and lors, Im curious to see if they mainly look at scores or if they look at everything. did you apply also apply to the programs that required lors from US docs also? most of the programs ive seen on the net req US doc lors and USCE. How many programs do not have this requirement? Thanks.

hi sharvil
i think u should apply now with whatever LORs u have.u can add other later. If u are already doing ur observership than ask for a letter .but if u have to start searching now,its not that easy.so better apply before all interviews are sent out. Most of the people who are fresh graduates dont have USCE.
bye
