I've been skimming through the forum and I came across a thread that mentioned competitive residencies. It said that IM was not a competitive residency to get into, FP as well. Can someone with more info list the competitive and non competitive residencies ? Thx

How bout competition for top IM programs, that must exist right ? Do IMG's with lower grades apply to IM/FP cuz of the higher oppurtunity of getting in one ? Do guys with high scores in the high 90's apply for IM programs ?

there must be guys in high 90`s who like IM and apply to those programs. Anyway, itīs the same thing, you must give all the best you have and try to get a position. Good Luck !

Yes, it's matter of personal preferences - if you have 99 in both steps, you can go to IM if you'd like it, but you should know that main reason why competitive residencies are competitive is that you'll have much higher salary when you'll be working as physician after completing these residencies - up to 3 times more, than in FP, IM, Peds, or Psychiatry.

You can see exactly how competitive various programs are by looking at the Sept 2005 issue of JAMA (jama.ama-assn.org) and the nrmp.org datafiles. CGR
