An 81-year-old man presents with left temporal pain of several days' duration. The pain is aching, and he notes night sweats. He has a mild leukocytosis [13,000/μ3 white blood cells (WBCs), normal differential], as well as weight loss because of jaw pain induced by eating. Chest x-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain are normal. The sedimentation rate is 110 mm/hr (normal for males is 0-15 mm/hr).
Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?
A. Migraine headache
B. Cluster headache
C. Temporal arteritis
D. Malignant otitis externa
