An 81-year-old man presents with left temporal pain of several days' duration. The pain is aching, and he notes night sweats. He has a mild leukocytosis [13,000/μ3 white blood cells (WBCs), normal differential], as well as weight loss because of jaw pain induced by eating. Chest x-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain are normal. The sedimentation rate is 110 mm/hr (normal for males is 0-15 mm/hr). Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis? A. Migraine headache B. Cluster headache C. Temporal arteritis D. Malignant otitis externa E. Major depression

C. Temporal arteritis should be treated on emergency basis, as risk of blindness is present.
