What is the difference in function between the parts of the brain called primary sensory areas and the parts of the brain called sensory association areas? Why are sensory memories more likely to involve the activity of cells in association areas than they are to reside in primary sensory areas only?

Generally speaking, we can say that primary areas are for simple components of one type of sensation (e.g.visual), secondary areas are for further analysis of that sensation (e.g. movement in the visual field, colors...), and association areas integrate several different types of sensations (e.g. visual with auditory and somatic like in Wernicke region).
