hi there

im just 23yrs old. i have applied to 92 categ int med progs with a step1 score of 99(247) on sept1 itself. i wil be givin my step2ck in early nov and cs in dec mid. i have no usce but solid reco letters from india and my ps is pretty rockin. currently undergoing a 1 year postgraduate diploma in geriatrics from ignou. need a h1. realise that my application sucks but is it beyond hope.. surely gonna get high 90s in step2 but wil it be too l8 by then.. the verification part of my ecfmg certificate will be over soon. so guess i might just squeeze in a barely pass in step3 by jan

i am also very interested and applyin mostly to uni categ progs - wil i have to forsake a year for it?

is there some1 out there who has been a similar scenario before? man i could really use some words of advice from u.. any special tips to follow? negative assesments are also invited to help me decide what to do? have imgs got calls on a single step score from uni progs? or by the time my application becomes complete with my step2 score (mid-l8 dec) wil it be too late to get any decent calls with all their iview slots filled up? do uni progs even glance at single step applications?

hope there is some1 in forum to light my way

If you don't match this year, you most definitely will next year... Also apply to prelim medicine posts that might sponsor a visa...You are still very young, and you can still get some research in publication in india while you wait till next year. Double 99's will definitely get a program directors attention, and losing a year wont matter much; but apply this year to as many programs as you can, and participate in the scramble... I would say that you have matching if not then scrambling this year too. But you will be able to get into better programs if you wait till next year.

I think there are programs that give you i/vs with your step 1 score since your step 2 score will not be in till dec. People like you have gotten interviews with step 1 score or sometimes late in the season when someone cancels. I think you will get sufficient i/vs to match.

But the timeline makes it impossible for you to take step 3 before april. It may take 2 months to get ecfmg certificate after cs especially since the holidays come in beetween. It will take atleast 1 month more to take step 3(since you need to get your permit and also schedule dates) and another 1 month to get result. Maybe some programs will wait.

But as a 23yo having a 99, sure high 90 in step 2 and a "rocking PS", you say your application sucks- that attitude is not healthy- grow up and learn that there is more than your high scores that make you a good physician.

hey doc_apurva,

i am in a similar situation, just that am 24yrs old and have a step1 score little lower than yoursgrin.

its a zillion dollar question that u have asked and havin done that myself a few times i have figuered out that there is nothing to lose by applying and that step2ck score should take priority over any damn thing in this world for the time being!!!!

so i am gonna apply too and without thinkin about a long term stratedgy, gonna jus focus on gettin a stellar score on the step2.

by the way, where are u doin this geriatric programme, in india or U.S and how are u planning to get visa for CS since seems like an issue as u lookin for an h1??

i know scores arent everythin. but for an img theyre the only thing... atleast upto iview time.. and the other "every"thing us clin ex is hard to comeby..

got a 10yr b1 kpp. and ur bullseye about the step2ck score. it means everythin. me goin a 1yr post grad diploma geriatric course from ignou. zero attendance/course reqd, degree certi guaranteed - so i dont have to show a gap in my cvsmiling face

hazel, write a 1page ps - 10point courier, take care about special characters. which part ru from? me from ahmedabad.

10 yr b1 is really a boon. you cannot be more lucky. Since you are young and fresh, don't rush into things and get prematched in some nondescript program with your scores especially since you are yet to givE CS and step 3. Instead,if you plan well, you can even get good univ programs or perhaps other specialties like anesthesia, radiology or surgery also if you desire in the next match. but nevertheless apply and see how it goes.

Nice to see some more fresh students with ambition wink

First, I would lose the cockiness with how young you are and how great you think you scores are--you are an fmg.

I think you step 1 score is strong and will carry you a long way. I don't know the policy on applying for fmg's but if you don't have to, why take step 2? I would apply with what you have, the lack of usce may hurt you a bit but your score may make up for it.

  #10

i like the "cocky part" but i sure plan to back it upwink

america is a country of immigrants. somewhere someone in every1s pedigree was "fresh off the boat"
im an fmg - and just like all imgs i too have to fight with an handicap as compared to amgs. but hell america loves underdogssmiling face
thanks man

ya know...the younger u are the better...1 of the main things programs look for is "FRESH" graduates, then great scores...most of the ppl I know have ZERO clinical experiance, have awesome scores, working in top class university programs and are relatively fresh graduates...oh and i forgot to mention bburns..............they're all international medical graduates (u weren't politically correct)

no offence to ppl - but what gives the amgs their swagger? we beat them at their test by their rules and have learnt the art of medicine workin with the poorest of the poor in varied setups. and they bitch about lack of exposure and variety of cases when reviewin of hospitals. and yet us clin ex is a decidin factor in grantin residencies.. cmon amgs at least dont look down upon us. and thank ur stars everynight that v fight against the tide. otherwise u ppl wud have drowned ages ago..

and mr burns - i had a perfect sat score and scholarships to do premed from 10 universities in usa. i declined bcoz i got admission into bj medical college ahmedabad which is asias largest hospital with a bed capacity of 1500+ and ranked the 10th best teachin hospital in india. i have a 1460 in gre and can get an mph in any damn ivy league uni i want. so pls show respect to our img community in general

Hey apurva,

Time to grow up man.Scores n Univ are just a means. They are not really something to boast out loud about.

I am an IMG too and no I do not believe you are right about all that "Pseudo Apartheid" stuff you seem to be waging a quixotic war against! There have been many in here with scores and profiles immensely superior to yours.None was as vain as you though.

Gluck.

doc apurva, I do not know if you have come to US already, but if you have and also if you have had the chance of interacting with american graduates and observe their confidence, maturity and professionalism, you will realise what your 99s mean. Anyone who crams through Kaplan can get high 90s nowadays. Most amgs come out with a debt of 100 k and obviously they should be given the first preference in their country.

Your SAT/GRE scores means you have high IQ. You got into BJMC by scoring high scores in your physics, chem and biology in 10+2(again by cramming). Coming from India, I know how they select medical graduates- just by marks, nothing else!iI agree you have a high level of IQ and probably memory and retention. But it looks like, you don't understand what life experiences teaches americans in general - most of them are by their own by 18 and an average AMG has better understanding of the system(I mean average- not outstanding). I cannot say that about an "average" indian medical graduate, although there are many outstanding graduates like you.

I wish you should have come out of your house after high school and probably you should have worked in PIzza hut part time instead of sitting at your couch and eating your mom's aamras and pooris while preparing for mle and cramming kaplan. Life is not that easy.

this is definitely a fiery forum!! Whew... I am an IMG as well, from the Philippines. I understand the American culture very well, and I don't blame US programs for considering their own graduates. They deserve it... in much the same way as my University will consider me first over the others who aren't from my Medschool.

I respect AMGs a lot, because they go through more than what we IMGs have gone through... all the hardwork, the loans... KASHAN is correct. and with respect to bburns (Hello) you deserve to be considered first in your country of course...

and with respect to APURVA, I congratulate you on your stellar scores, you can be successful in every aspect, but always remember, that SUCCESS is not about being the BEST/ or the FIRST, it's about fulfillment. So make good choices, you're young, and you have a lot ahead of you... practice humility, and you'll soon realize that you'll feel a lot better.

All the best!
