Hello everyone. I am a US medical student and I would really like to pursue an Internal Medicine residency program at a University program in California. Can anyone give me an idea of how hard it is to get such a position and how strong my application should be? Thanks

Very difficult. Try to get some experience where you want to go. Choose some place that has some IMGs doing residency in your specialty. You will need the "California Letter" for an observership or clerkship there. lf

personally, i think it is tough for an img to get into a residency program in california. im not saying this because i think imgs are substandard or inferior in any way. im saying this because in california, there is just too many AMGs to compete with. i think the reason for the stiff competition is largely because california is just so "desireable" to american grads. they say it's all about "location, location, location", and a lot of people just love california. especially here in the San Francisco area, competition is really tough because there is a huge mass of applicants. but give it a try... they can only say yes or no, right? you never know what they are looking for in an application anyways. i interviewed for a program here where the program director said he was very impressed with my scores. i was shocked because i didnt get like 99/99... i've always thought my grades are mediocre or average. but the program director himself told me that i shouldn't under-estimate myself just because im an img. most amgs, he said, pass the usmle... but that doesnt mean they have high scores. on the contrary, most of them do JUST ENOUGH to pass. So by his standards, my application is EXCEPTIONAL! regarding the CA letter, i have more extensive posts on this topic elsewhere in this forum. please feel free to look them up and learn what you can from them. you could read about my own "MAJOR HURDLES" there and hoepfully learn from them so you avoid the "miscalculations" i made. but for the time being, you could check out the website of the medical board of california at http://medbd.ca.gov
