I am having trouble figuring out how to do probability problems in my genetics class. I need help in figuring out an easier way of doing them. For example:

Consider the offspring in a cross of two AaBbCcDdEe parents. Compute the probability for the following offspring:

a) AAbbCCee

b) aabbccddee

c) aABbccDDee

d)A-B_ccddE-(where A-=AA or Aa)

the problem I am having is, I need an easier way of doing this sort of problem. The way I do it now is I write out all possible phenotypes, maybe I am doing it wrong. So, maybe you could show me that also. If anyone can help me with this type of problem it would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Sorry, I know I posted this in the wrong area but I am still new to this and don't know how to determine where my thread will post. Thank you in advance for any help that ANYONE can lend on this issue.

i don't get the question!

if u are asking about probability of offspring with homozygosity(AA or aa) by 2 parents with genotype Aa, then the probability would be simply 25% or 0.25, now inorder to have joint probabilities of four independent events ,multiply all the probabilities together for eg. 0.25 X 025 X 0.25 X 0.25!

you don't have to write out all the phenotypes, do what ssprk said

For example, the probabilty of (c) aABbccDDee would be:

Aa x Aa, probability of Aa is 0.50
Bb x Bb, probability of Bb is 0.50
Cc x Cc, probability 0f cc is 0.25
Dd x Dd, probability of DD is 0.25
Ee x Ee, probability of ee is 0.25

mutliply 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.25 x 0.25 x 0.25 = 0.0039, or 0.39%
