Hi all, I have a question for you.

I just checked the fees for this year match, first 10 programs included in the 60 dls fee, programs 11 -20, 8 dollars each program, 21-30, 15 dollars each program. after 31, 25 DOLLARS EACH PROGRAAAAAM!!!!!!. I think that is a lot of money. somebody said "apply to at least 100 programs", that means about 2165 dollars for an IMG, I am right in my calculations? cause I think I probably did not understand it very well, because this is far beyond I had calculated. my budget only allows for 40 programs maximum, which according to advices would decrease my chances enormously.

thank you very much.

Somebody told me that there is a 1 to 9 ratio which means that to get 3 interviews you should apply to 27 programs. But I think all this hugely depends on your ability to choose a right program to apply. If you apply to all 27 programs as Johns Hopkins university you will get none simply because they do not call IMG to interviews. Narrow your choice by visa issues, location, the style of life you want during residency, by your scores... I've chosen only 22 so far. Maybe I will make it up to 40, that is it. If I am not to be accepted in none of those 40, the chances are that I would not be accepted in other 60 anyway. That is just my opinion, your may vary.

how exactly do you go about researching the programs? is it by calling one after the other program director and asking for info or is there any other way out?

Well, some things I hear from friends who are already in residency or people I met during courses. For example, it is hardly a secret that some New-York programs are located in dangerous areas and people there are worked "to death". On the other hand they are more visa-friendly, so one may simply do not have a choice but apply there. I am married to an American citizen. It has it pros and cons. He can tell me a lot about locations, what people are like there. On the other hand I am restricted to a particular area and is not going to apply all over the USA. There is a site www.scutwork.com which is outdated but still can give an idea about some programs. Though all the reviews have to be taken with a grain of salt. Other then that, I simply go through FREIDA by specialty and state. I look whether it is university based or community based, how many residents, how many intervies, what is the percent of the completion the program, what are the scores on board exam, I look through the schedule: how many hours, what percentage outpatient vs, inpatient training, what benefits... I look at the site of the institution. Some of them have excellent technical base, some have to take patient to do CT across the street. Some have fellowship positions, some do not.I know pretty much well which program does not take IMG at all. If you do not know-- you should call. It will save you money. That is about it. If I am lucky to get interviews, then I will look at the institution itself , talk to the residents and make up my mind in the end.
