Vitamin A is essential for maintainence of epithelial integrity.A deficiency of predisposes to squamous metaplasia of the trachea and bronchi and the renal pelvis....therefore the association with pneumonia and renal stones..... since our epithleia are the first lines of defense that organisms encounter .
