ok, i'm a beginner with this stuff --- furmethide and hexyltrimethylammonium (HTMA) are both muscarinic acetylcholine receptor agonists..... furmethide is a full agonist and HTMA is a partial agonist.... does this mean that they all bind on the same site on the receptor as acetylcholine?

You have to separate 2 factors in your mind: activating the receptor and binding to it. There is no correlation between them. Yes, full agonists, full antragonists and partial agonists bind to the same receptor, but there is difference in degree of activation, as well as in degree of binding, i.e. how strongly (how long) they bind. First factor determines the effectiveness of the drug, i.e. is it agonist, antagonist, or partial agonist, second - potency of the drug, i.e. how much drug you will need for its effect. and remember - there is no correlation between these 2 factors.

agree, activity of the receptor is in turn depends on the receptor effector system and sensitivity of the cell to external strimuli which in turn dpends on the number of spare receptors that are present!
