hey coolbabe76

reading your reply gave me some reassurance- i was feeling low after my step 2 scores.

my scores are 95 (step1) and 90 (step2CK) and i'm applying for peds.

what do you think are my chances for getting calls for peds residency?

thanks

General Surgery used to be possible for foreign grads to match into. But things are changing for several reasons: 1.) lure of plastic surgery after general surgery, 2.) 80 hr work week, 3.) big demand in the US.

I know a general surgery resident from Pakistan who matched at a program in General surgery 2 years ago. He had a 255 on step 1, and a 260 on step 2. And he matched into an ok academic program. He said last years class took no foreign grads at his place, because now people from the US with very solid grades are applying to general surgery in strong demand.

Here is the problem. US grads can get scores like 190 or 200 on step I and can match into General surgery without a problem. but if u are a foreign grad, expect to score atleast a 98-99 on both step 1 and step 2 to EVEN be considered for an interview.

Residencies that you have almost no shot at applying to: orthopaedic surgery, radiology, plastic surgery, ENT.

good luck in family medicine or psychiatry...u may have a shot in those fields

so if i have a score of 99/98/CS passed/ step 3- 88....do i have a chance for general surgery? i have already done my obgyn in india. graduated in 2002. what are the visa issues? are they more with general surgery than internal medicine/obgyn?

Hey There,
I have ben reading this forum for quiet some time now.As an introduction I went in a couples match for surgery(myself) and internal medicne(my wife).I know that it is hard to match but there several thins you can do to enhance your chances.I have posted my comments on the surgery match experience thread. You do not have to have scores in late 90s to match in surgery various combinatiosn work out (70s match and 90s do not match)Some one who has done a post graduation in Otolaryngology with those scores has an excellent chance at surgery spots but I would suggest also applying for Otolaryngology. There are several programs having PGY2 spots in Otolaryngology as well and if you are lucky they might offer you that before the match itself. As far as pediatrics is cocerned you will definitely get interviews(at least 10) I am saying this with 100 % confidence;just be careful in accepting a prematch(APPLY EARLY AND YOU WILL GET 10 INTERVIEWS).Some institutes will offer you prematch straight away so you have to think about it.Do read my post on the surgery match;it will give an idea of enhancing your chances of a successful match.I will try to keep up with the feedback.I know that this is a stressful time but do not worry things will workout.Hey Jose I send you an email do check it.
Best of luck,
