hello everyone... i have a couple of questions regarding applying for radiology speciality. From what i understand, most radiology programs require one year of preliminary internal medicine. Is there any programs that do not require this? If we take a preliminary year of im, then if we don't get a radiology position the next year (since it's almost impossible for an img), does that mean there is a chance that i could be jobless that year? How do you go about applying to programs that require one year of preliminary im or general surgery? anyone with any info regarding this, please let me know.

Also, i would like to know how you guys go about choosing the hospital in which to do your residency program. What are the criteria that should be looked for? I want to work in a hospital where i will get to see as many patients and cases as possible with great professors. I heard that a community hospital that's university affiliated is best for this. Then, what do they mean when they say "University based"? which is better?

My last question is regarding letters of recommendation... i don't have any from the US, since i have'nt had a chance to work anywhere or do any observership yet. I do have lor from my medical school, though. Will that help? what are the chances of me getting a residency position? My usmle step 1 score is 94; step 2 is 91. I have a green card. Would really appreciate any advice regarding these topics. thanks guys.

Radiology needs a year of IM or transitional residency prior to starting. This is a requirement of the curriculum. Some programs are beginning to put this year into their curriculum. University based means that it's at a university rather than university affiliated - which means an academic affiliation. Use the strongest LORs that you have. Good luck
