Hi guys!, I'm a soon-to-be IMG (one year left 'til I graduate) I wonder whether it's possible to do a prelim year then take a few years to do research fellowship to boost up my CV before I apply for a competitive residency? and if i get into IM and complete PGY-1, can I drop out for a year or two to do research and then apply for other competitive residency? is that possible? Thanx!

Prelim years are just as competitive as regular residencies. Research fellowships are usually best done after residency, not before. You can integrate research years into your residency training, but most prefer to get the residency fully behind them and engage in research during their clinical fellowships. If you do break out and do research during residency, it would likely help your chances of a good fellowship. CGR
