How do you calcualte Osmolar gap and what is its significance?

Osmolar Gap = Serum Osmolarity - Calculated Osmolality

Helps to narrow your differential diagnostic in difficult situations.

Yes!...just a little elaboration...

Osmolar gap normally is 0.It may be elevated when low molecular weight intoxicants such as ethanol,methanol and ethylene glycol are in the circulation.
