Depend on the time...if he is not vaccinated yet, you can give VZIG within 96 hours to be effective. Anytime after that is useless, just wait for rash to develop.

If he is already vaccinated..then there is no need to do anything

1.in CHILDREN-we don't do pestexposure prophylaxis(unless they are severely ummunocompromised)-just let them go through it-the disease is much easier in kids that adults plus they get immunity.

i'd guess the only thing we can do-is to isolate them while they are contageous.

2.in ADULTS(not sure about all adults or not-but they say about 20% of general adults will develop severe pneumonia as a complication),PREGNANT OR IMMUNOCOMPROMISED individuals what we do is:

-first check their blood for anti VZ Ig level-and if they are already immune to VZ-do nothing.

-if they are not immune-then give them IVIG-but only in incubation period, otherwise it's worthless.

VZ immunoglobulin is available for prophylaxis in patients with debilitating illness(e.g., leukemia, AIDS) if you see them within 4 days of exposure and for newborn of mothers with chickenpox.
