A 40 yr old ciggarette smoker is found on routine physical exam to have a 1cm white patch on his oral mucosa that does not rub off. THERE r no other lesions in mouth. He has no risk factors forHIV. the lesion is non tender. next step in management will be...

1. culture for candida

2. biopsy lesion

3. reassure patient that it is a normal variant

4. follow up with annual physica l exam
