functions of pineal gland...

a)Circadian rhythm

b)sleep patterns(melatonin inc: during night)

c) involved in seasonal affective disorders

d)inhibit sexual development...as melatonin level(pineal gland is large in children) is higher in children....inhibit sexual development.....it is progressively decrease with age.

Impt. clin. correlation...

Pineal tumors may cause obst. of CSF flow, inc. ICP & NC hydrocephalus. Compression of the upper midbrain, pretectal area or post. commissure by a pineal tumor may cause PARINAUD'S

SYNDROME, in which a pt. may have impaired conjugate vertical gaze & pupillary light reflex abnormalities.



Other impt. clin info:

Pineal calcification may REDUCE the output of MELATONIN & be a cause of?????

INSOMNIA.
