I bought a list of residency programs which give such info as minimum requirement of USMLE, US clinical experience, VISA, etc. Some programs support H1, while others support J1, and some others do NOT support at all. Does this mean that if I join a program that doesn't support H1 VISA, I have no way of getting H1 VISA, or it simply means that I have to hire a lawer by myself to get H1 VISA?

From what I understand, the way that the guidelines for the H1B visa were written, was that it is against the law to have the employee pay for their visa. If the employer wants them on an H1B visa, they must pay for it. So even if you offer, they can't accept. And if you know of people who are in programs that paid for their own H visa (not the premium processing fee), they got screwed by their employer.... Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your info. >From what I understand, the way that the guidelines for the H1B visa were written, was that it is against the law to have the employee pay for their visa. If the employer wants them on an H1B visa, they must pay for it. How about J1 VISA? If I apply for J1 after getting into a residency that does NOT support any VISA, will that be a problem?

Thank you very much for your reply. Let me rephrase my question: If they don't support any VISA, I have no way of getting VISA? Or, if you don't mind paying for yourself, you can get J1 VISA (if not H1 VISA)?

If they don't support any VISA, I have no way of getting VISA? Correct - they don't support any VISA. They want candidates that are citizens, have permanent residency or will be getting permanent residency.

Call and ask if they sponsor visas. If I had a nickel for everytime that I was asked, I would be on vacation in Peru, Germany, Korea, or Yellowstone!
