How to distinguish these two?

basically UMN's are diviuded into flexor and extensor biased UMN's

- corticospinal tracts and rubrospinal tracts (upper limbs) are flexor biased

- reticulospinal and vstibuloapinal tracts are extensor biased

Threfore lesions involving UMN tracts above the midbrain result in decorticate rigidty [extension of lower limbs and flexion of upper limbs {as rubrospinal tract remains intact} ]

while lesions involving UMN below the midbrain results in decerebreate rigidity with extensions of both the limbs due to unopposed extensor biased upper motor neurons!
