Hi, I was wondering, how much of time should we spend on counselling a smoking patient especially,if the chief complaint is unrelated to smoking.Eg-If a back pain patient comes to me and also happens to be a smoker, should I spend time telling how bad smoking is for health, that the patient should try to get over the habit, that there is counselling help to get over it, blah blah.Wouldnt it look as though I am drifting away from the main point of cocern(ie,back pain) and sermonising on an unrelated thing.Frankly speaking,I would be annoyed if I were the patient.Bu t all the books mention about counselling all patients. Can someone tell me excatly how and what has to be told in cases like these............ Csobsessed, are you still around?? -jedi
