sadHere's hoping that all our Mexican friends stay safe and dry while "Wilma" passes through the corner of Mexico.

And families, too.

THANK YOU bbb for your wishes.

I hope so, too. Fortunately I donīt have neither family or friends in that area, but iīm worried about all the mexican people living there. Besides that some areas are just recovering of the past hurricane. The images in the TV are impressive.

Hey everybody,

Hows life? I did not get a chance to write sooner because of some problems with my computer. Also third semester can get you pretty busy. I havent had the chance to go for the pathology cdīs in Cuisillos, but I really do want to get a hold of them. I avent been studying much of USMLE stuff because I am focusing in my classes (which is the basis of STEP 1). I have also started as an anatomy instructor in the anfiteatro. It has been a great experience and a wonderful review of gross anatomy. It also feels good to pass on knowledge (even if it I dont know much...jaja). Aside form that everything is pretty good. Well, just wanted to say hi to everyone and good luck.

Saludos desde Guadalajara,

Amado

Hi guys. My name is Antonio, I graduated from Universidad de Monterrey in 2003. I passed step 1 and 2, and took the cs a week ago. Im trying to apply for the match this year, but Im having trouble getting my Deans letter. Do anyone of you know if its essential for our application??. Please let me know, and anything I can help, please just ask.

  #188

Hi Antonio, itīs nice to meet you. No, itīs not essential for our application (the deanīs letter). I donīt have one and iīm applying for this match, too, for surgery (you know, they will do a substitute for it). Which residency are you applying to?

Iīm doing my 2cs in 2 weeks, any advice for it. I have First aid, mastering and UW, is that enough. Any advice or suggestion on my study program or for the day of the test would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Chemamr. I think the material you have for studying is more than enough, but I would recomend you to practice with someone. I didnt practice and at the time of the test I became relly nervous and forgot to ask a lot of questions and a lot of aspects of the physical. (I dont know yet if I passed or not), so, I would recomend you to practice.! And 2 weeks is more than enough to do it.

Im applyimg to psychiatry. What worries me its that it may be to late for my aplication. Do you know about it??.

  #190

i think we are similar about it. I think itīs a bit late, but not too much, itīs possible if we have some luck. What Iīm doing is applying and waiting, if we canīt "match" this year, there isnīt problem, we can do it next year, definitively, because weīll be ECFMG certificated, but if we do it, we could save 1 year. So, i think the best thing we can do is try it!.

Thank you for your advices, i feel more confident now about my materials of study. I practice with my girlfriend on weekends only (because she isnīt in the same city), but maybe it will be enough, we have practiced 33 cases till now. Good luck in the match Antonio, keep posting here in our forum of Mexican people (if you wish), the support is very important sometimes, mainly coming from other mexican.

Drgaxmac: Hi. For step 2 CK I suggest to study about 3 months. I used Kaplan books, I think thats enough to read, if you want, use the crush series. But most importantly, do USMLE WORLD, I think thats the key!. And if time allows, go ahead and do Qbank.

  #193

i agree, the keys are kaplan lect notes and UW. I didnīt like and i donīt advise you kaplan qbank. Review book? i would say crush or boards and wards.

hey guys, how's everything going. I guess it's a matter of taste how to prepare for cs and ck. In my case, I spent 3 months studying for ck, just went through first aid twice and then did qbank twice. It was more than enough. I did it really hard core and come test day I felt extremely confident. For cs, I studied for 1 month, just used first aid and the key, definitely was to practice with someone. And after practicing I went over the cases on my own again. Try to come up with some sort of pnemonics so that you don't forget what to ask while in there with the patient. I guess it's normal to get nervous, especially at first. Before the test I had never talked to a patient in english before so I got kind of nervous. But after the first patient everything was ok. however, I'm sure that if I hadn't practiced I would not have passed. Do it in english of course and with a stopwatch, that's very important. I've received a couple more interviews so far, so that's great. Hope chema and lorena are doing great in that regard. I guess a dean's letter is not necessary to apply but it would definitely help to have one or a similar document.. Let's keep our heads high, everything will turn out ok for everyone, take care everyone.

  #195

thank you for your wishes. How many cases did you practice with someone before the exam (step 2CS)?

  #196

I went all the cases found on first aid for the cs with someone and then did it again on my own just to make sure I knew the particular questions I needed to ask in special cases, such as pediatric or gynecologic history. My advice is to not waste time on learning special/weird maneuvers. You won't have time to perform them. Focus on obtaining the "easy" points. Everything is worth the same, whether it is to write down vital signs or performing an eye exam with an ophtalmoscope, they are all just one check on the checkbox and one takes much longer than the other. Memorize all the easy stuff to do that will give you lots of points such as always draping the patient, introducing yourself to the patient, washing your hands, etc. It's not hard, just practice.

  #197

thank you PM&R guy, that gives me some confidence.

  #198

PM&R: Hi, I havent been able to get a Deans letter, Do you have one??

  #199

Hi Mxshrink. I wouldnīt call it a Deanīs Letter but I did manage to get a document from my school explaining a little bit more about how our system works (6 years instead of 4 years for example) and what we do on every year, etc. Itīs not the best of documents but I thought I it was worth trying; itīs better than nothing; besides, I think we should try to portray ourselves as competitive as possible, especially since we are competing against american graduates; they obviously have an advantage over us and so why turn in one less document than they do? I would suggest getting an interview/appointment with your dean, explain the situation to him and see what you guys can come up with. Hope this helps. I will let you know if it actually helped me out or not.

  #200

Thanks PM&R I'll do my best to get a letter from him, but I'm not that optimist about it, every time I need something from the university it takes an eternity.
