Hi everybody, my name is Jaime, and I'm mexican too, I've been searching a lot of information about the USMLE, I just finished my social service year 2 months ago, and I'm seriously thinking about making my residency in the US, in fact, I already start to study for step 1, but I haven't apply for it yet. Well, it's good finding some mexicans around. I'll appreciate any advice for my applying. So good to know you guys. We'll keep in touch.

nice to meet you Jaime. Where did you study in mexico, what university did you go?. There are some guys here from Universidad de Guadalajara (like me ) and from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, too. If you made it in Guadalajara, where did you make your clerkship (internado)? itīs nice to meet you again . SilatK and drgaxmac are very FRESH in all that stuff of the step 1. You can check also in this topic, i donīt remember if in the page 2 or 3. There are many advices about books and resources for step 1 that these guys suggested to Medusin who is preparing for step 1, too.

Hey thank you so much for your advice Chema, I really appreciate it. And well I studied at Morelia in UMSNH (Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Higalgo), and I made my clerkship here in Morelia too, but I lived in Guadalajara when I was a kid, it's a pretty nice city. And it's good to meet you too; I'm going to check the pages that you told me about and look for some advice; and one thing is that I don't know yet is when should I complete my setp 1, as maybe you know after your social service year you're COLD about knowledge, I have to think about that seriously. Well, thank you again Chema, and we'll be in touch.

Jaime, as Lorena says, if you wish to do all this stuff of the USMLE and go to the USA to study your residency, you should start right now. Many hospitals have a requirement to accept somebody or not (besides your USMLE scores and visas issues), and itīs the number of years after you end your medical school, many of them ask you no more than 2 years after. Iīm in the time limit.

But itīs not a rule, there are hospitals that have a requirement of 5 or 10 years or they donīt care if you are an old graduate.

Good luck drgaxmac, you are going to kick ass! Jaime, I would suggest getting Kaplanīs books for step 1, I used them and I think theyīre great, then I reviewed using first aid and finally practiced using kaplanīs qbank (I think thatīs a must). This is obviously just one way of approaching step 1 but, in my case it worked. Good luck and take care. Hey Lorena and chema, howīs it going with interviews? Take care!

drgaxmac, i wish you the best of luck!! some little suggestions that worked for me: Take a good rest as you have planned, sleep well , during the exam try to stay calm and focused, dont panic, take deep breaths, plan your breaks, eat light, no caffeine (so you dont have to go to the restroom). Remember that there will be questions you may not know (the infamous experimental questions) dont let these questions loose your balance!! you are prepared to take this test so go for it!! Thanks guys for wishing me good luck with the match. So far i havent got rejections nor interviews . They are probably waiting for my LOR's to get uploaded? i hope so!. My professors took quite a while to write and send them ...oh well. Jaime: I agree with PM& R about kaplan notes, first aid and kaplan qbank....if you master these you will get a great score! Chema: you'll do great in your CK and then interviews will flow It feels good to be the only girl around this thread

So i got to the testing center 20 minutes before time (even though it says you should be there 30 minutes early, but the traffic was a mess.) I cannot give you specific questions about the test. But i will say it was pretty well made, it had a little bit of everything, Microbio (pretty simple stuff), pharma (pretty easy also, not a lot of graphs). As for anatomy, there where some qs about GI and nervous system. I had Histology (a little to much for my taste) but not that hard. Immuno- Hiv, T cell activation, b cell activation. Biochem- Just know the pathways, i did not get a lot of biochem. Anyway, most of the qs had combos, like anatomy with pathology corelations, physhio with patho etc. Overall, i found the test totally doable, i am not saying easy, but if you have confidence , you can make it. TEST TIME It was not a factor, I finished every block with 10-12 still remaining. BREAKS 2 blocks- 10 minute break another 2 blocks- 10- 15 minute break. another 2 blocks- 40 minute break. So by the end of 6 blocks i still had like 1 hour for break time, this is because as i was telling you, i finished every block early. Importante NOTE: After i was finished with each and every block i took a break (5 min) . But i remained in my seat. The breaks mentioned above where the ones where i left the testing center. MATERIALS USED First aid (definetly the bible for step 1, but not enough by it self) K lecture notes (read them about three times), goljan (listened to him two times). And that's basically it. Did not do a lot of qs. Just the ones in qbook (did them once, and then on last week reviewed them all again). I did NBME 1 (1 month before the test) got a 560. Did not do NBME 2. Ill tel you my score when i get it. Thanks to all for your support and good wishes. You guys and Lorena, (since she is the only dama who regularly visits this forum) are the best. Cheers!!!

hi guys!!! and also girls!! Drgaxmac, it sounds like you did pretty well!! congratulations on taking the test ...that by itself is something you know ...and i am sure you will pass with flying colors I just found out with the oasis trick that i PASSED my CS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! am sooo happy. I also took ACLS these last days, it was fun...not that it is a big deal but i didnt have something better to do...hahaha... so i am in a very good mood today! I am also extremely happy because i am going to Mexico next month to do a rotation in psychiatry (to complete my PTAL without defficiencies) so, first it made me a little frustrated but now i am all excited that i will visit my family and friends. have a nice weekend everybody!! Yelenatx: Mexico city is an incredible place to visit some days, make sure you visit the zocalo, the cathedral and the "Palacio federal" , you can get inside, it is free and there are some beautiful murals by Diego Rivera and other famous mexican artists. There in the zocalo or main plaza is a hotel "hotel majestic" and on top there is a restaurant with a great view....you can have a nice dinner there while enjoying the view of the main plaza. Also visit the "Palacio de Bellas Artes" that by the way you will notice it is sinking big time. Coyoacan is a neighborhood and Frida Kahlo lived there, his house is now a museum...the whole area is nice, many places to have lunch, or dinner. Enjoy your stay!
