Hi spitmetal, here is to answer your question about the transitional year, the following is some info on the different programs we can choose from, I read it from the American Medical Asociation:

"Residents in one-year transitional programs rotate through different hospital departments every couple of months. While a transitional program counts as a year of training, it may not provide enough credits to move into the second year of residency training.
  • Preliminary programs are also one-year programs for those wishing to specialize who need a year of internal medicine training. Categorical programs are three-year programs that may allow you to train up to board eligibility if your performance is satisfactory. Categorical programs are seen as the more traditional program and are mainly hospital-based. Primary care programs provide increased emphasis on ambulatory care experience in the community and are becoming more prevalent. Those who are sure that they will be working as a generalist are advised to apply to a primary care program. Those who wish to fully train in internal medicine and then have the opportunity to train in a specialty should apply for a categorical position. While it is preferable to be in a categorical or primary care program, training in a transitional or preliminary program is better than being in no program at all. It is highly advisable to choose the program that best suits your needs and goals."

Chemamr, lo que pasa es que, I work in a non-gov organization, a health center, and I met people from all over the US, that volunteer or donate money to our health center, a couple of them asked me about my goals, and offered to help me with a scholarship or something like that, I didn't tell them yes immediately because I felt acquired, but since I know it is too much money, I am going to ask them for help, not sure how much they are going to be able to help me with, but any amount will help at this point.

thanks yolanda for the explanation.

Spitmetal: don't worry about it, you'll think in english, eventually. Mnemonics in spanish are fine. I think i started thinking really in english when i studied for my step 2ck. I also was struggling when i studied for my step 1.

Yolanda y que estas esperando mi chula avientese

Take the opportunity ! !

  #1307

i think so spitmetal. If somebody did a transitional year, it's easier for him/her to get into a residency in USA. But I don't think it's easy to get a transitional year.

  #1308

I guess somebody misunderstood what I said. As far as I remember I never said "I hate all gringos" or "this country". Did I?.
You know what? I'm going to say this in spanish so I can explain myself better.

I have been living in the United States for 1 year already, and I can tell you guys that most of americans that I have meet are very nice people. I hope it explains what said.

I have a couple questions for you guys.
I have the Lecture Notes from Kaplan for each subject. Do you think I need to buy other books to study for Step 1?
Also I have Kaplan's question bank. Do you think it is enough? if not. Where can I get more practice questions?

so chemmar u dont think that getting a transitional would be easier than getting a family or internal medicine program?
because as far as i know fm and im are the easiest ones to get into?

cedrik, jaja, you made me laugh with the my chula part, but you are totally right, I will send them an e-mail tomorrow to start that process.

Spitmetal, it depends on what you want, you can apply for both categorical or primary care programs and transitional, when you rank your programs, pick the primary first because if your goal is to do FM or IM, well, pick the residency program that is going to secure your 3 years of trainning, if at the end you end up doing a transitional, well at list you have one foot in the door, like they say, but you would have to do the match all over again the next year to enter another program and that would be another expense, more money, so if you get into a different program I think it is better.

spitmetal: my only source to tell that is FREIDA because the IMG % in transtitional programs is 8.5% which is very low compared with FM which is 38% IMGs. Anyhow, i don't think it's easier to get a transitional year, so you should go directly to apply to IM or FM or whatever residency you want to apply.

one piece of advise spit........worry about one thing at a time...forget about the specialties and get ur books, whatever books ure gonna use for step 1 (yes!...any books!! any books that u actually read are the right ones) and master them...u dont have to worry about every single thing about usmle exams, u dont have to worry that u dont think in english, u dont have to worry about how much money ure gonna make... it will overwhelm u, i think is has already started to......so...just take it easy and take it one step at a time and forget about anything else....

Quick Question my friends.

I am about to go and translate my transcript. Do I have to translate the internado grades, too?

Thank you

Sorry about that, i did not explained myself. I have the original transcript issued by my school, but it only includes the school years, the internado grades are in a separate document.

Thank you and sorry about that.

i only translated the transcript. I didn't translate the ones from the clerkship.

That's a good question. I think it's up to you, you can translate only the transcript as it's given to you by the school or do also the another page of the clerkship. I don't think it will make a real difference. I'm sick of these translations.

  #1320

the way i did it....i put them all together..just the way they were on the original (spanish) paper.....1styr, 2nd yr.........5th yr, clinical clerkship...genral average. Im thinking im gonna have to add there the class rank.....that would probably be a good idea fellas.....the 3 progam directors ive met here have said they pay a lot of attention to that....so u should think of including that...even if it is not too great...they just want to actually know where u stand.....
