Hey guys, Iīm mexican too, just found this thread. I am applying this year for a PM&R spot; however, since it is an advanced program I have to also match into a preliminary year of internal medicine; Iīve sent already my applications (last week) and have gotten so far 2 interview invitations for Preliminary medicine (yesterday); according to my research, PM&R invitations will be sent until October, hopefully thatīs true. I already did a couple of observerships in US programs (I highly recommend doing the same thing!). For whatever itīs worth, feel free to contact me with any questions and I would be happy to try to help. Good luck to everyone!

  #136

Hi! Welcome to our part of the forum, it's great to know there are more mexicans.nod

I have some questions, Where do you live? Where did you do your obeserverships. I ask you this because i am taking step 1 in ocutober 13 and i am interested in doing an observership while i prepare for step 2. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

And once again, Welcome.

Hi, to answer chemamrīs question: thank you first of all. The interviews are from pinnacle health in Harrisburg, PA and St Peterīs University Hospital in New Jersey. Keep in mind one thing though: even if one program can be IMG friendly in one field (eg.internal medicine) it does not mean that it will be friendly in another field (eg. gen surg) and the other way around as well. My best advice is to send out as many applications as possible (>20) and be willing to go pretty much anywhere (unless you have spectacular grades). You will see that there are spots out there available for us! Gen Surg is considered mid tier (competitive-wise), so, if you have good grades and apply a lot you should be ok; if you make contacts or, even better, participate in a rotation plus get a letter of recommendation then youīll be in ever better shape. If possible try to not only apply with mexican letters of recommendation, they usually donīt say or have what american program directors want.

drgaxmac: I live currently in Aguascalientes and I participated in observerships in NYC at St. Vincents hospital and in Illinois at Marianjoy hospital. I really think an observership could help you out a lot , most importantly, to make contacts, get people to know you and your work and, definitely, get letters of recommendation, itīs key! It would also help to better prepare you for step 2, thatīs for sure, especially if you do an IM or an ER rotation. Hope this helps and if necessary, keep the questions coming!

Hi!!!grin

I haven't written in many days, i apologize but these last days have been crazy.

First of all i am back from Palo Alto where i took the kaplan 5 day live class for CS.

Silatk: I think it is great! . I know it is pretty expensive but we had 2 simulated exams ( 1 with 4 patients only , kind a pre-test ; and a second one a complete simulated exam), a lot of practice, a lot of feedback, everybody was very nice : actors, teacher. It built up my confidence level and i really enjoyed it. I can even say that i enjoyed my CS experience. nod even if now i am getting tormented by many things i now remember didnt do, for lack of time or because i just completely forgot confused ...anyway lets see what happens.

I have read many people only read first aid and UW and do fine, but i didnt want to take a chance because i am applying for this match. I cannot comment on UW because i didnt take it, FIrst aid is excellent, and the cases to practice are very good.

Now i am in the process of applying to residencies...the personal statement took me forever and now the stress starts shocked

Welcome PM & R . I am applying to categorical Internal medicine and family medicine but only in california and hawaii because of my husband's work sad

drgaxmac...your exam is getting close...i wish you the best of luck!!

take care everybody, keep on posting

Lore cool

I really like the weather jeje. And besides my family is here. Good Luck to you too.smiling face

Hey guys, sorry it took me a while to get back to you (busy weekend); ok, about observerships: I can obviously only tell you about my experience, it doesnīt mean that what I say is a rule or something like that; itīs definitely not easy to get one but itīs not that hard either. At first I thought I would never get one and had no idea how to start. Turns out I got a couple and it was definitely the best thing I could have ever done. One other thing, keep in mind that Iīm talking about PM&R, I have no idea how it is with other fields such as IM or surgery.

The first thing I did was get into FREIDA

http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.htm...

It is a great website (donīt know if you know it) that lists all specialties and all programs offering training in each specialty. Itīs a great way to know everything thatīs available out there; it includes contact information such as e-mail, telephone, website, etc. Now, after doing this, it comes down to how much time and money you are willing to spend. The cheapest but least effective way is to simply send out e-mails to all progams that you are interested in asking them if they offer observerships; the problem with this is that it is not as formal or "eye-catching" as, for example, a letter or fax. After doing this, some programs responded and some didnīt. THen, what I did is send out letters to programs that I was still interested in and had not responded my e-mails; the letter not only stated that I was interested in an observership but I also included a version of my CV. I noticed that the best method was to simply call programs and directly ask them if they offer observerships or not. It can save you a lot of time but it can get expensive depending on where you call.

The thing with observerships is that hospitals donīt officialy offer them; some offer them at times only; itīs really miss or shot. One of the hospitals I visited didnīt usually take observers; I just happened to send my letter with good timing and it turns out that when it arrived the hospital WAS taking observers. Itīs usually hard to get one on short notice so anyone interested get started as soon as possible. Most programs request something extra from you in order to consider you; ie. medical school diploma, letters of recommendation, CV, etc. it varies.

Iīve read on the web that some people think that observerships are a waste of time; I disagree, especially if you are an IMG. If you are truly serious about residency training in the sTates, itīs the best thing you can do (other than passing the steps and all that too of course). You meet people, people get to know you, you get LOR, you get to know the system, you get to make friends, you get to find out if you really fit in one program or another, you get to know a city you would potentially be living in for several years, etc. Iīm not saying you canīt get a residency spot without an observership but I think it really gives your application and your confidence a boost!

Note: I might be wrong but I think that in order to apply to a residency program in California a California Letter is required from the State Medical Licensing Board, otherwise itīs impossible to match into those programs. Donīt know if you guys know that; if you do, great, you are cool; if not, look into it, since I think it takes quite a while to get one (and money too). And I donīt know if it only applies to IMGīs without a green card or to anyone who didnīt go to med school in California.

Chemamr: itīs cool that you are applying this year! When do you plan on sending your application? According to my research, I would recommend doing that very soon (ie. 1 or 2 weeks) even if your application is not complete yet. Although programs may have deadlines until december or something like that, if you wait until then it will be hard to get interviews because most programs will have sent all their interview invitations by then.

Lorena: Good luck in your application process, Iīm sure youīll get what you want.

Finally, sorry for such a long post, just wanted to be thorough with my answers and be as helpful as possible. I got another interview invitation today, YES! Take care!

  #148

Thank you PM&R guy for such a great post and for being interested in all of us. Yes, in fact, I started to apply, i have applied to 33 programs, until now, but ERAS is still uploading my documents i sent them by FedEx, so i have to wait. Besides that, maybe (if i have luck) i have to wait a little more because my 2ck score is gonna be available until october 26 approx., so maybe some programs will give me an interview until watch it. I donīt know, I hope so.

yes, that California letter lasts like 6 months, approx., i think. Lorena is getting on or i donīt know if she has gotten it by these days. I simply decided to not apply to California because of the time and deadlines, I wasnīt able to do it. And there are too many hospitals, so it doesnīt matter.

I think to get an observership as you say PM&R guy you only need to send an e-mail to the hospitals and request it. I think it can be easier if you are still in your medical school or in the clerkship or doing a residency somewhere. But itīs possible too if you have graduated.

Keep in touch guys.
