Drgaxmac: what's up with you, how are you doing??, getting ready for your step 2CS?. You'll do it fine, do you plan to take those live courses by Kaplan or only on your own??

By the way, it could be good if somebody of us make a grammar mistake or any other mistake in our english, to correct him/her. I think it could be a good idea. smiling face. It's not very easy to learn english in a perfect way. rolling eyes

drgaxmac: use the digitaldoc blog. Very good info in it. A friend who is taking her test this Friday has gotten very good and useful info. But the trick for this test is practice practice!

chemamr and Lorena were you able to finish in time all the cases? Was the phone call about a child?

SilatK: No, i didn't complete all the cases, for example my neurology case that required a complete neuro exam. And yes, my phone call was about a child, i talked with the mother.

Drgaxmac: the key is total practice (from when you knock the door until you finish your patient note). You have to be able to do a complete neuro exam very quickly, let's say that if you can do it completely in 7 minutes, you are ok.

Hey guys I have a question. For the pharmacology part of the exam (STEP 1), do you have to know the brand names of the drugs or just the generic names? I would think only the generic, but I still wanted to make sure. Thanks for your help.

Drgaxmac: Good luck on your test! Please let us know how it goes.

well that a good question i really dont know im newer than u but lippincotts illustrated review, pharmacology for boars and wards, FA and katzug lange review only mension the generic name so i guess the brand names doesn't matter at all

Hey Medusin, you don`t need to know brand names for the tests, don`t worry about it; you will though for residency (almost everyone in the States use brand names for the most part); don`t worry about though meanwhile.

Hey Drgaxmac, good luck on your test, you`ll do great. As chema said, the key is to practice a lot, using a stopwatch and everything. With some cases you do have to perform a full neuro exam but keep in mind that shaking your patient`s hand and performing a full "fondo de ojo" exam carry the exact same weight; ie. if you took to long interviewing your patient, don`t waste tame on a long test, rather focus on earning easy points such as draping your patient, explaining everything to him before doing it, ask him if they have any questions (they usually do), etc.

Siltatk, I also got phone call case involving a kid and his/her mom; they are pretty easy, and you`ll have extra time left because you don`t have a patient to examine.

Good luck everyone!

Thank you spitmetal and euroboy. Just wanted to know for sure. smiling face

Hello everyone!

I see that some of you have already done cs, thanks for writting your tips.

I am from UABC. Anyone else from UABC??

About my back, jejeje, unfortunately, I have a herniated disc, hyperlordosis, escoliosis, and rectified sacrum, but I won't let my back influence my decision on my specialty.

Chemamr asked:

1) Do you wanna come back to Mexico to work there after you finish your residency+sub in the USA? (Besides the likely 2 years because of the visa J1). Because that simple decision can change many things, residencies well paid in USA are not well paid in Mexico, if you plan to stay in USA, then concentrate on that.

I don't want to come back, my dream would be to work in CA, to be close to my family, or any other border state. But if I don't get a waiver for the J Visa, and/or if I don't get married, jejeje, I will have to come back, so am just thinking ahead. Of course I would like to come back as a volunteer to work with underserved communities, but my "paying job" I would like it to be serving the underserved latino population in the US.

2) The only clear thing you say is you wanna do your MPH and work in preventive health care in WHO, CDC or any other organization. So, if so, you aren't going to have a clinic practice?. Then wouldn't it be better to study FM or preventive medicine, then do your MPH and work in that.

Yes I definitely want to have a clinical practice, but I want to combine it with an MPH, I am still not sure how that would work, if I would have to work part time in clinical practice, or would I have to choose one form, but I don't want to focus to much in this, because I end up thinking, and thinking and planning, and daydreaming, and focusing in things or decisions that are not a priority right now.

I have to focus on the first hurdle which is step 1. My problem is that I have so much work, for example I am giving a workshop on Woman's Health to community healtcare outreach workers, so I spent today reading about menopause, and I didn't study for step 1, I guess that reading and preparing other topics will help me to study for step 2 ck, and I do enjoy and love teaching, that is another carrier choice for the future, but I need to remember that I have to take off my "doc" hat or my work hat at my job and put my "student", "usmle preparing", "want to ace USMLE step 1" hat on, immediately after I leave my job!!

Take care, hasta luego.

I don't think it's necessary to get the First aid 2006 spitmetal.

Yolanda: I think you're right in something, right now you have to prepare well your step 1, that's the 1st step in this road. You have a lot of time to think about which speciality and all that stuff. That "daydreaming" thing also happens to me, it's difficult to avoid it but if only happens several minutes a day, it's ok.

Hello!!

Yes I am from Tijuana.

Right now guys, I am feeling a little bit anxious, I can't seem to set a date to start to study and stick to it, I started on Sunday only read 2 chapters of anatomy but since monday and today I haven't been able to study.

Unfortunately I have a new boss, and I have to prepare a complete, detailed, report about my work, and all the health projects, so it is going to take me all night today to do it. And I have to prepare a class by Friday, so I re-scheduled my start date to Saturday May 6th, HOPEFULLY I will stick to that date, and I have to promise myself that no matter what I won't do work related things on my study hours.

I am going to make beleive that I am actually paying for a very expensive course, that it is going to take place in my house, jeje, and that I can't miss going to it, no matter what.

Did anyone had a hard time beginning to study like me?!

Hi spitmetal, yes, there is a $50 dlls fee for an eligibility period extension.

You have to fill the 176 form.

http://www.ecfmg.org/usmle/form176.pdf

They allow us to make a one-time extension. You may request an extension of your eligivility period only after your eligivility period has begun. Requests received at ECFMG more than 25 days after the end of the original eligibility period will not be processed.

If you have a scheduled appointment during your original eligibility period and need to cancel and reschedule the appointment for your extended eligibility period, you must cancel or reschedule at least five business days before your scheduled appointment to avoid a rescheduling fee. Requesting an extension of your eligibility period does not cancel a scheduled testing appointment you have to cancel also the appointment.

Hope this helps, the info is from the ECFMG booklet.
