Hi Medusin i'm afraid i don't have something helpful for you with this situation. You know, the only contact i had with this USMLE thing was Dr. Lara (our dean) and he was very friendly and supportive with the papers i needed when i applied for my step 1. So, I think he can help you but i don't know more people. So, i don't know how you can fix this thing. But all the time you've spent there in Houston in the hospital is gonna be really worth it, if you can't come back for this summer program, it's ok, don't worry, you have a lot of time, you can go back in the next semester, or later, in your clerkship, etc, etc.

Hey thanks Chema, but I am not in Houston. I at the University of Texas at Austin, but not in a hospital, just taking basic sciences as part of an exchange program. By the way when do you start your observership/externiship and how is the research on hep c going?

yes, clerkship is internado. Internship in english is the "intern" year= PGY1=R1. sorry, i got confused, it's the same state, but different city. . Well, that was the same idea. Thanks for asking, research is going good, i'm gonna send an article to an internat magazine in 1-2 weeks so i think that's gonna help. My externship is from July to September. I applied for an observership in October, they haven't answered.

on my step 1...i got maybe 5 questions of ct´s,mri´s and radiographs combined.....and as I said before, the could have been answered without the images.... same thing with histo slides and blood smears....maybe 5 or 7 total...."black patient, no spleen, crying in pain", and then they showed sickle cells....totally unnecessary....cos they dont even asked me the diagnosis...they´re gonna end up asking wheres the primary defect on this patient?...so..spit, my advise, just get the big picture, step 1 is about the basics...know the basics, the images will be obvious and superfluous....

Hey spimetal I think you were asking how long does the ECFMG certification last. I just read this on another post by chivasregal. Posted: Mar 23, 06 - 05:11 #3 ECFMG certificate is valid indefinitely now since june 2004..people who took CS after june 2004 or who got certified after 2004 will have indefinite validity on ECFMG certificate...if u were ECFMG certified in 1983 and u did't take step 3 by that time then i think not only ur scores have expired but also ECFMG certificate has expired by now..read ECFMG website for it or call them to ask abt ur situation. good luck

Don't get confused, clerkship are not the "internado". The clerkships are the core rotations you did as a med student, like internal medicine, pediatrics and OBGYN... Internado is not a part of the US system.. But when you apply for the match there a question that asks you if you need a intern year to complete to obtain a degree... There are two different things...

intern year is the internship, they call intern to the first year resident in USA. Clerkship= those clinical rotations that in the mexican system i think it's equivalent to the "internado". i had posted this doubt some time ago

NBME is a self-assessment tool, they are around 200 questions for each step (approx), they don't give you the answers, you can do it only once and at the end you get your report, that is useful because is a graphic of your performance in each specific area or speciality to know your weaknesses or deficiencies and it's also perhaps the best self-assessment tool. They give you a 3-numbers-score but they also give you immediately in a chart the correlation of that NBME score with the score in the real step 1 or 2ck, etc. Hope this helps spitmetal.

hi spitmetal, don't take nbmeforms as practice but as an evaluation of your progress. kaplan qbank is for practice. the three digit score that nbme is the same type of score you will get on your score report. there is a high correlation between nbme scores and step 1.

depends. there are currently four nbme exams. i plan on taking nbme #1 around the end of may if everything goes well, which leaves me about a month and a half to work on my weak areas. last couple weeks i will take forms 3 & 4. you should also plan on taking one exam early on to determine how close you are to obtaining a passing score. the result can either scare you and make you work even harder or give you peace of mind that you will pass. then close to the exam take either 3 or 4 which are closest correlation to the actual score you will get. i hope this thread doesn't die out since so many are already heading off to residency
