hi friends, my annual program is taking shape, i´ve already applied to observerships and an externship (i´ve got a confirmed spot for this latter), i´m waiting their answers, they can last up to 4-8 weeks to answer. I also have scheduled and confirmed 1 month in clinical research through University of Texas, and currently i´m in the Centro Medico de Occidente (IMSS) in the Investigation Department, i´m gonna be there meanwhile some obser/externship program accept me, this current activity is just to learn more about research and if possible, to write some publications (which i think it´s very likely because i only have been there 1 day and I already have 1 assigned paper in which i´m working on it).

i just wanted to say hi and share some info about my annual program, i´m getting ready for next match. smiling face

Chema!! Thats great news!! I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU

grin

  #829

lorena: thanks

general malaise: ortho surgery is very competitive, 2.1% are IMGs only

general surgery: 20% IMGs

Internal Medicine 50.8% IMGs

so, it´s very competitive buddy, you would need to get >98 in all the steps and more...

Lorena thanks a lot for your comments and all the others who answered.

Hey Chema that is great!!
Could you tell us where did you apply for the observer/externship?

What kind of investigation are you working on in IMSS?

Perseverance is a virtue my friend. Just keep hanging in there. Congratulations.

thanks Medusin. I´m and i´m gonna be working in Clinical Research about Hepatitis C. Dra Contreras is one of the experts in the area in the country and she is my chief.

Good thing is that i´ve always been perseverant, i mean, all my life.

Today Lorena Ochoa did pretty well, she got into the sudden death playoff of the first major women's golf tournament of the year. unfortunately, she lost by one shot and came in second place.... oh, well...hopefully next time.

As you can tell I am a fan of hers wink

hi i´m hugehugo, i´m from torreon coah, mexico , 26 yo., i´m actually in my 1st year residency on orthopaedics in CMN 16 torreon, i took the step 2 on march 11th. i didn´t have so muh time to study but i had to try it. i´m waiting for my results. Finally i got into a chat room with mexican people. I started preparing to take step 1 probably in next december (because of the wards etc). I´m wondering ... what kind of material did you studied (or are studying) to take this test?? thanx

  #835

i know it´s extremely hard to get a IMG place in US residencies as Orto. But i don´t wanna regret it i don´t try it. IT´S VERY NICE TO SEE PEOPLE FROM YOUR COUNTRY TRYING TO GET A US RESIDENCY !!! I DON´T FEEL LONELY ANYMORE HAHAHA

i forgot to tell you:
-i have the FA
,- Kaplan review series (by systems) like 10 books,
-the princeton review (a very fat book)
- and some books called "board simulator series, a body system review for USMLE step 1" (four books of test banks with explanations)

which ones of those are the "must" to ... i mean... really use them as "study guides" and which other q-banks or materials do i have to have ???

HI Hugehugo! welcome to the coolest forum around!

Good luck with your step 2, let us know when you have your result. 2 of our members are waiting for their results as well, and other people are getting ready for step 1 , just like you.

I think kaplan and first aid are a must, the rest of the material you have I didnt use so i cannnot comment on that, so wait to other people responses.

keep posting,

Lorena

  #839

Hey Hugo, welcome! I agree with Lorena, I did the exact same thing (including kaplan´s qbank). Go for it! Good luck!

  #840

hi hugehugo and welcome to the forum. i'm taking step 1 in august. don't worry about using princeton review. its big but it hardly has any detailed info. stick to kaplan lecture notes plus FA and goljan audio.

Hello Medusin,
Well about taking Kaplan at UAG well when i was there only students from the International program could sign up for it. Also you must have your titulo in hand in order to be ECFMG certified meaning you must do Internado and servicio social. The classes in the International program is done in a way where they do not loose a semester. They still graduate in 4 years. I was in that program for 1 semester and the classes do differ a lot from the Latino program. They are very very intense. Vey focus into the USMLE. they examine the material in alot more detail then the Latino program.

Chema I am glad you might get a spot. also you are a research program that might actually help you more to get into a Residency here in the U.S. Then probably doing a observatorship here. Hepatitis C i s very very common here. A lot more then in Mexico. Very prevalent do to IV drug usage. It is still uncertain if it can be transmitted sexually. some say you can some say you cannot. Good research material isn't it?

hello Hugo and welcome.

Some time since my last post & very very exiting news from you guys!!!

CONGRATs to ALL of YOU! I said it before... I say it again, you are my mentors.

spitmetal & hugehugo welcome!!!

They´ve allready gave you a good reference for your study material, in deed i agree with FAs, Kaplan & please... get some Goljan audio. I just did & I loved it... a lots of high yield... realy realy good stuff!!!

hugehugo... it´s great to hear about a resident applying for the boards. Exactly my plan. I can´t afford right now all those fees and stuff. It´s hard enough with my scholarship, my living expenses & all the processes to pay for the "título & cédula profesional", amen with the national residence test.

I took a time off the forum. it´s a hard work down here at my community, hard to keep up with my study program, my friends at culiacan take advantage on me because of their social service... that really pisses me off. Anyway... I still share the same vibe of you guys... till the end off the road!

noxar311. congrats on your CK! any news about it yet? good luck with that one buddy.
I just loved your post... ".......by the way....i was the only one not passing the national test...they all are now "R2" at pretty good mexico city hospitals...im the only one still stuborn enough to continue to pursue this..." GREAT ATTITUDE! Even doe I´m gonna take the national test first & seek for the boards in my residency.

Susie (arciniega). Welcome to the step 1 takers. Keep on the good track guys! Hit the books.

Medusin. Nice ATTITUDE too dude! That talks very good about you... allways thinking the best for your patients. Praparing hard, know it all, better education, etc... all of this ends in the same common pathway... our patients health!

CARPE DIEM! smiling face

grin thanx

  #847

Hey Hugo welcome to the forum. I am also going to take Step 1 soon.

You can get golgan audio at coolgoose.com. Go to audio and then USMLE. If not you can download shareaza and then look for goljan.

Thanks mario for your comments.

Hello people,
I'm very glad to have found this incredibly helpful area for us mexicanos to discuss our journey. I have some questions for the people that succesfully matched into a US residency (a great achievement! :nodsmiling face:

1. How important were your grades during medical school to the PD's?
2. If someone's goal is to apply for a US residency, is it advisable to attend UAG because of the international program (I know it's expensive there)?
3. Looking back at medical school, what one thing do you wish you would have done from the first year (or regret doing)?
4. Any other tips for us? sticking out tongue

Thanks so much for posting your experiences; it's helped me lots in this process smiling face

  #849

Ok Scorpius I will help you with your questions!!!

1. How important were your grades during medical school to the PD's?
>> Grades in your Med school are not very important, for my experience they never asked me about my grades in any interview... what is important for the IMG is the USMLE Scores... higher grades will open door in great programs.

2. If someone's goal is to apply for a US residency, is it advisable to attend UAG because of the international program (I know it's expensive there)?
>> I am a UAG grad, and I can tell you it doesn't matter. Any school that is on the WHO list (a list of certified med school arround the globe), can give you an opportunity to take the Steps. Now, UAG has more prestigue in the US, also has more experience and more personel dedicated to help you, mainly in the application process. But, no med school in mexico can give you any advantages to enter a residency in the US. Also, you can only enter the International program of the UAG if you are a American Citizen and is very expensive (22k USD a year). Remember that the best Med school is the one you made with your studies, hard work and dedication.

3. Looking back at medical school, what one thing do you wish you would have done from the first year (or regret doing)?
>> For me, I guess starting to know more about the steps, get the information about the questions, books and courses.. I'll definetely but all my books in english with the review book for each subject oriented to pass the STEP 1. Another important thing that I needed back in med school was to look for a guide or a mentor in this huge process. I didn't had any help or guide and I made huge mistakes in the process.... but at the end I got my residency.

4. Any other tips for us?
>> I guess the best advice is to tell you that this process you are about to start is extremely time consuming, sometime frustrating and you will expend a lot of money in books, qbanks, test, interviews and match... So you better be sure that you really want this and be 100% commited to your studies, because let me tell you my friend, this is not a easy road to take....

I will be here to help you
