Cheer up Karla! I think that the first thing you should do is to be positive about the whole process. Don´t think just yet that you will fail, because if you do you will probably do so. You have to positive and optimistic! In case you really can´t change your exam date then just focus on studying and practicing many questions. The way I look at it, as an IMG we have to try to compete in the same level as American grads. Most of them pass the steps on their first attempt and that´s why we should do the same, to be able to compete against them. At the same time, both americans and IMGs fail the exams and many end up doing a residency anyway. Just stay positive and, as someone else mentioned earlier, don´t listen to bad experiences; rather listen to good experiences on this forum. Everyone is doing pretty well; and we can all tell you that it has not been easy at all but it has been absolutely worth it. Although not easy, the exams are very doable! Smile, good luck!

  #677

karla, a good way to know if you are ready to pass the exam is by taking the NBME forms http://www.nbme.org/programs/sas/sas.asp i think each of the forms costs 45$ but give you a good idea of where you stand. most people who have taken it relate their score correlation very closely to what they get on the exam. if you get a low score, postpone it no matter what. why waste so much money if you are not likely to pass it.

thanks guys, i´ll tell you my result as soon as i know it (i guess like in 4 weeks i´ll know). smiling face

Karla: don´t lose hope. USMLE Steps are like a marathon, a resistance/will power/perseverance test, that´s it, you just have to hold on, study really hard and you´ll do it. They are not that difficult, it´s simply an exam that many many people all around the world passes. If you think you are NOT ready, if you don´t feel confident you will pass it and get a good score, definitely don´t do it, postpone it, it´s always much better to pass it at the 1st attempt or at least, at the less attempts as possible. I would also recommend you to take the NBME test ($450 pesos approx is nothing) to do a self-assessment and know in a more accurate way if you could pass it or not. About a study method and books and all that stuff, listen to our other mexican members who are currently preparing for that step. Hope this helps.

Hey Chema the best of luck. Hope everything turns out ok.

Karla please listen to these guys. They have all gone through this and have succeeded. Take all things into consideration.

By the way I have a question for all of you.

Is it better to get different types of books like combine USMLE High Yield, BRS, etc etc or just stick to one series? What about using different books or using a comprehensive review like Kaplan which has a book on each subject? Thanks.

hello! Well Karla you have really good advice from everybody here, I hope the decision you make is for the best. General malaise my last name is Montes de Oca, but I don´t know of someone who had left for Reynosa. What semester are you in??? I also have the same question as Medusin, if I go with the recommendend texts like BRS, etc....or the Kaplan books, or combine? Well, good luck in all your activities!

  #681

karla: I know you cannot change your test anymore, therefore I suggest you study physiology. You still have plenty of time untill March 31. Plenty of time to increase your score. Take the nbme test like ASAP. Then see where you are at. F.A. is good but only after you study every subject either through kaplan notes or review books or combine.

You do not want to take it just to find out!!

good luck and welcome!!

hey, guys Thank you so much for all your advices. I am checking right now the NBME webpage, and I am taking the exam this weekend. So, you can take this exam anywhere right and you do not need to be a med student here in USA ?? RIGHT? You only need to pay with credit card and that is it rigth? Well, is how I understood. Well, thank you so much and really all the information that you have given me. See you and I just will give my best on March 31st. ps. I just feel so bad because I just realize couple days ago about you guys and this webside. But, well next time I will get a good score because now I will know what kind of material I have to use.

  #683

that´s correct Karla, you can take NBME without any problem, you just have to pay on line with a credit card and they DON´T care if you are a med student or a police officer of Taiwan, smiling face, the point is there isn´t any problem. You can take it whenever, 24 hrs/day, 7days/week.

Medusin: you can combine the different series (kaplan, BRS, blueprints, etc, etc).

montes, i left back in 2004 i would have been starting my 6th semester with pathology. Dr. Vera was my anatomy and neuroanatomy prof who never really gave us class but was always asking which one of the girls i liked most. about what books you should study from, since i haven't taken the exam yet i can only say what has been working for me so far, even though most IMG's will say kaplan lecture notes are enough. for me the ones i've found very good are physiology, behavioral science, immuno section, neuroscience sections, biochem. the rest i've pretty much ignored. for path, i'm using combination BRS, and everything goljan. micro MMRS + microcards. highyields for anatomy. pharm i started with lippincotts since i was used to it but now only use FA. oh yeah, and do annotate FA like crazy cause its should be the only thing you read last couple weeks before exam.

WOW! It just knocked me out!!! Reading all this posts made me feel like home. Seriously… I just saw merely impossible to make a residency in the US.

Before I start asking you guys a lotta questions I´ll rather get updated with all the info you´ve managed before. I just read the last dates.

Let me introduce myself… my name is Mario. I´m from Culiacán, Sinaloa, I studied in the UAS faculty of medicine, did my internado year at the HR no.1 IMSS Culiacán… at the time I´m doing my social service in a rural clinic in Elota, Sinaloa. That´s between Culichi & Mazatlán. I´m busting my ass off preparing to take the national residency test & of course... crush the boards. Same as you (think so) I believe in a better education, preparation & most of all… to practice real medicine, “the” medicine I´ve read all of these years in my preparation. I have the conviction to prepare myself to take the boards & make it “to the end of the road” no matter what.

CONGRATs to you all my friends (if I can name you so). I wish you all the same vibe you´ve been talking about.
Special ones to chema (thumbs up budd). May the force be with you!

CARPE DIEM! rolling eyes

Hey Mario, welcome. Sounds like you have the right attitude, just like everyone else in this forum; therefore, you should be just fine. Study a lot! And any questions you have, feel free to ask them. Good luck to drgaxmax and noxar on their upcoming tests. You guys will do great, I´m sure. I agree with Lorena, step 2 is definitely less harder and more enjoyable than step 1. It´s a step closer to reaching your dream guys, no let down. Good luck. Drgaxmax, while you´re taking your test on Monday some of us will be finding out if we matched or not;ie. pretty exciting day and week, overall, for a couple of us. Good luck everyone!
