Hi everyone,

I have a problem. I just got off the internet the USMLE Road Map for Pharmacology but I did not notice it was the first edition 2003 (no wonder it was so cheap!!!).

What should I do? Read it, sell it, burn it? (It is really cold in Austin now) The new edition is from 2005 and I think I should get that one. Rememeber guys to look closely at what you are buying, specially on the internet.

Susie thanks a lot for your comments. I am not currently in GDL. I am at The University of Texas at Austin for a one semester exchange program

The reason I asked why everyone was applying to the US is because it got me thinking some time ago. If the best medical students (such as all of you) are leaving, than how is Mexico going to improve in research, primary care, etc?

I want to go to the US simply because of the prestige it holds, and to have the chance to work with the best physicians in the world. Not just ĻgringosĻ but from India, Mexico, Phillipines, Spain, etc etc. As Chema said, it is all for the patients. However it is kind of sad that we have to look elsewhere because our country does not hold these kind of opportunities. Well that is my humble opinion on the subject and I guess the only thng we can do is keep going.

There are also many excellent/brilliant medical students that stay in Mexico, they mainly do their residency in D.F., Guadalajara or Monterrey (best hospitals) and they will improve research, primary care, health care services, etc, in Mexico. They simply didnīt want to go to anywhere else, or they will probably do their fellows in a foreign country and they will come back to Mexico. But i agree in something: itīs kind of sad that many med students (like us) have to look elsewhere out of our country to find the opportunities weīd like to find in our country.

Very interessting point Medusin! I will give my point of view later on.

I gotta go but talking about successful mexicans, I am going to watch Lorena Ochoa. She is in Hawaii and she is doing great! she is on the top so far and tomorrow is the finale. If you guys have an opportunity to watch tv, I may appear there in the background with a big mexican flag grin and a t-shirt of "la seleccion mexicana"

talk to you later.

Hey Mxshrink, I got 9 interviews total; Rehab is getting pretty competitive but I feel pretty optimistic about the whole thing; at the same time I did some observerships at pretty good hospitals (rehab observerships) and got letters of recommendation and interview invitations from all of them. And last week I got some phone calls from program directors from some of the programs I interviewed at (and which I really like), so Iīm hoping everything turns out alright. And if it doesnīt, itīs ok, Iīll just keep trying and trying.
About studying abroad, itīs definitely sad that we have to do it, but, think of it: it happens in every field nationwide: sports, engineering, arts and crafts, etc. Unfortunately, in order to be succesful or to receive the recognition one sometimes deserves, it has to be abroad. Iīm not generalizing.Like chemamr said, there are great people working here in Mexico but itīs definitely not easy!
Letīs keep on studying!

Medusin,

I agree with you completely. It is called "brain drain" when the smart people in a country leave their homeland to go somewhere else for different reasons grally. to improve their quality of life, education, better opportunities, etc. I agree with chema too, there are so many excellent doctors in Mexico and I want to be a part of them.

I came to USA because I got married, now that I am here I want to take the opportunity and do the specialty of my dreams and a fellowship, but eventually I want to return home for so many reasons: my family is there and my best friends, and for me thats more important than all the money. I love my country and I always liked my life style there -even if I was never rich and I have a better life style here- but over there I had things that I dont have here -my family, my friends, my language, my native culture-

It is my dream that once I finish my specialty and a fellowship I will go back to Mexico and practice, teach, and work with excellent people, doctors, teachers. That way I can contribute to the growth of my country and why not? I may be an inspiration for young mexican doctors at my University. Fortunately my husband is a "mexicophilliac" and he also cannot wait to move down there smiling face

Arriba las chivas! grin

me too!!

Hola,

I was surfing around the internet and I found this website which I think is very useful and I found a strange comment on it:

Best time to take the step-2 exam is during the House-job (internship) because the clinical knowledge is at the peak. After completing the internship, study for 3-4 months for step-1 exam and for CSA, I would recommend at least…

What do you guys think about it?

The website is http://www.imgi.org/usstudguid.html

nod

What a game!!! Chivas, Chivas, Super Chivas!!!

About the best time to take the Step 2... I suggest after you finish the fifth year... not during.. But clear step 1 first before step 2... and CS at the end...

  #639

wish me good luck guys confused, i'll do step 3 this thursday and friday.

step 1: after having some clinic fundaments, maybe during your 5th year. Step 2CK when you end your 5th year. Step 2CS you could take it right away after 2CK. In this way, you'll be certified during the onset of your social service.

but whatever choice you make, i think you should do the step 1 before step 2CK.

Hello everybody!!!!

Well I see we got moved and also there's new people here.

Well Medusin I recomend that you get Kaplan notes 2006(blue).
When it comes to which test first it is really how you find the time to prepare. There are some people from UAG that I know-of that took Step 2 Ck first and then Step 1. The resons is that while they were in the internado they study their butts off and it turns out that at that moment it was eazyer for them to recall most of the material for Step 2 then for Step 1. So when they started Servicio social they had plenty of time to review at least 6 hours everyday to review for Step 1. They are already in some programs. I am trying to find out exactly which ones but I will hopefully get all the info before the 13th. for those who are applying for this year's match.

Now why do I want to be here in the U.S. instead of Mexico? Because I was raised here and I feel more at home here. Even thought I went to school In Mexico it wasn't wazy at the beginning I had to adapt. But I marry someone who was raised in Mexico so I will probably spend some time in Mexico too practicing Medicine. My own practice that is. To be sencere I have no desire to work for IMSS or Salubridad. They are too corrupted and completely out of day for me. So my plan is to open a clinic 45 mins from GDL. Perhaps once in awhile a future surgeon to be would like to donate their time for some surgeries for those who cannot pay. Uh! chema! But first I need to work my butt-off to obtain the money to buy the land, build it and buy the material!!

It is true they are some great physicians in Mexico sadly there isn't a lot of support from the goverment to increase research and improve medical treatments. Sadly they have to wait to for what ever comes from the U.S. or Europe. When I was in my fourth year of medical school I want it to review and do research with AIDS patients in GDL. For this I had to go to the Centro Medico de Occidente well let's just say that hte guy incharge of "ensenanza" looked at me like a bicho raro. mas aun when he found out I was from UAG. two years ago a Mexican Friend who graduated from Harvard was doing some research in Renal Failure I told him about an increase of cases in young adults in the area where I did my Internado. Well Let's just say that the IMSS was not really interested in this. My friend had obtain the money for this research. Well he is still doing but not in Mexico. He is doing it here in the SF Bay Area. Sad but true. IMSS did not had to pay not one dime. Hopefully in the future thre will be people in charge of IMSS who really care in improving the system and not just because of amiguismo and they have no idea on how to run a hospital.

Well enough and good luck to all!
