Hey guys!!, today is the last day to modify our ROL. Make sure that its certified!!. Theres no more thinking to do, just waitint. Good luck to all, I hope we all end up in our 1st choice.

Chemamr, how come you dont think youll match?

  #578

hi guys sorry i ve been away, just got my scheduling permit for step 2 ck, and i have a date. March 13, sounds like a bad luck day huh? But i took step 1 on october 13 and i did good so well see.

I have a doubt though, i have like18 days to go, i dont know what to study. I have two options(or sopas) 1- I can read k notes again or 2- do usmleworld questions along with crush the boards.

Any suggestions my friends?, come on chema share your wisdom with me i know you did this test and got a great score. Take care guys and girls and good luck on your stuidies and appplications.

iīm realistic, itīs always the scramble, too. but, itīs not a problem at all, next year i think i would match without any problem.

iīm thinking, what would you do if you were in my shoes and you realized your real chances to match arenīt good this year?? would you do the scramble by yourself +- 1 friend who could help you or would you buy/hire a scramble service?

would it be worth it (a scramble service)??, i donīt know, itīs too expensive, more after all those expenses. $500-800 USD or something like that.

what do you think guys??? rolling eyes

please answer, i need your opinions and advices.

Chemamr, first, if all of us were realistic, we would all be preparing for scramble, have some confidence on your self, you are a doctor, and you graduated from med school, that means that you are equal to the rest of docs here, and you had to pass the same tests we all passed, but anyway, I would go to scramble with a friend who could help me out calling. I would not contract any program to help out, first, I dont know if I would trust them, second, I dont think that the PD's are going to think so highly of you if your are paying someone else to do the job. But thats just my opinion.

Drgaxmac, Hey, I would sugest you to do some questions and read crush!.

  #582

thanks Mxshrink, please donīt misunderstand me, the issue is that I only got 1 interview, can you imagine it?, maybe itīs because i only applied to general surgery and itīs becoming more competitive each year or because i applied only with my step 1 score which is not good, there are many factors, so, thatīs the reason. Of course I trust myself and too much. I think you are right!, in fact ERAS says they donīt recommend to use one of those services, i think i will follow your advice, only one friend and me.

Drgaxmac: if you only have those 2 options: i would go with UW+Crush. I donīt remember well but youīve studied many months (so, thatīs enough i guess), now itīs time to practice with questions and more questions + a review book. You could also read some of your weakest areas if you want. But iīd rule out going with kaplan notes again.

Chema,

I dont have experience with the scramble but this is what ECFMG/ERAS have to say:

"We also urge you not to engage services that, for a fee, purport to help you by flooding the programs with unsolicited applications from multiple applicants, either by e-mail or fax. Instead of being helpful, in most cases they are detrimental to your application."

I post it here so everybody can read it , in case somebody is considering using one of these services.

thanks Lorena. smiling face

Lorena, explaining where i'm from would actually take all day. honestly i don't know where i'm from but at the moment i live in mcallen, texas and i go to med school in reynosa, tamps. but we are originally from morelia, mich. my mother and father attended med school at san nicolas de hidalgo where they met. then we moved all over the states. i began medical school at UANL in monterrey. i miss it very much. after my daughter was born i didn't know if i should continue studying, but i decided to apply for a transfer to a school called universidad mexico americana del norte right across the border. it does not compare at all to what i was used to in monterrey

Hey dr gaxmac, whatīs your name? Maybe we do know each other and thanks for welcoming me to. I would do as many questions as possible.
About chemaīs question, I agree with the above, probably the best option is to have friends help you out; Iīm planning to do the same thing in case I have to scramble (hopefully I wonīt).
One question: how many people from this forum entered this yearīs match: Chemamr, Lorena, mxshrink?, me...
Hey laloblum, how long did it take you to get the visa? Was it a lot of paperwork?
Good luck everyone, itīs an exciting time and I think and hope everyone will do great!

  #587

Theres someone else from this forum who was interviewing, but I dont remember if he sign'd a prematch or if hes going for the match.

  #588

What is that little ball we have under our names now?, have we always had it?. I dont know.

  #589

george1974mx was offered a prematch in patho in NY, i donīt know if he signed it or not.

yes, thatīs right Mxshrink, iīm almost sure that ball means who is ON LINE and thatīs something brand-new in this forum. They are making several changes, thatīs good.

It's normal at this point to start loosing the faith... but remember that hope dies last... Keep it up, and worry when you have to worry... Now the match is only 3 weeks away..

Now a few recomendation of a US doctor made me while my interviewed process... If you are participating in the match... one or two days before the match you should be inside the US.. with a Fax machine and a telephone ready if the outcome of the match wasn't what you expected.
You have to be in the US (for those who don't live there) because it happens that PD will want to interview you right on the spot... and give you the position after the interview. So on scramble you need to be in a place where you can fly anywhere of the US if necessary.

I had already made plans to be in the US for match day... but since I got a prematch... then I stayed here in mexico...

Now the J1 visa.. (the one I have) it took me about 2 months to get the paper needed to go to the consulate to get the passaport stamped with the visa... But I will guess after match day will be a little more delayed.
You need to get a letter for the secretary of health in the DF... So be aware that you will need to spend a little more on that... but you need the contract to start the process...

hi guys, which are the advantages to be in the US during the scramble??.

laloblum says one would be to be in a place where you can fly anywhere of the US if necessary.

but what else??

i ask you because i had thought to be in Mexico (guadalajara), i have my PC with internet, Fax, phone line to call PDs, a friend or my sister with a laptop and internet and i could fly from guadalajara to wherever to interview or sign a contract or whatever (although they say this last thing is not very advisable unless both parts -PD and applicant- are really very interested).

whatīs your opinion?

Hey Chemamr, I am not to familiar with the scramble, but I think that there are no interviews in person, I believe that everything is done by phone. I doubt they'll have time to interview people in person (it would be a waste of time for them and for you, because you would not have time to interview with other places).

  #594

yes, thatīs what i meant to say.

so, you think i could do it since my home in guadalajara, right?.

ok

Hello you guys !!!

I don't know if you still remember me... I'm from the UAG and I posted a few messages back in december. I couldn't come earlier because my husband and I just bought a house and we just finish moving, plus the holidays and the whole thing of my US naturalization it's been a little complicate to come into the PC. But I'm back and I'm ready to keep in touch with all you guys.

I just got my title and my cedula profesional and now that everything it's seattle I decided to take the Step 1 on august -september of this year. I already bought the kaplan books and the goljan audio from internet, I have been reading the FA and I hope that this weekend I got the MMRS of patho and micro from the bookstore, besides that I have a brunch of books that I want to take a look also.. by the way.. any recomendation of what to study as a must for the Step1 ? It will be really helpful for me of those who already took the exam...

Well.. I guess this is it .. I'm on the track for my certification ... wish me luck ! (that we all need it hehe) nod

I supposed that I can't be very helpful for you with information about the process because it's for sure that you are gonna be doing it before me wink.. but I wanted to tell you that I'm also interested in the rehab medicine and well, if there's something that I can help you out with, that would be my pleasure ok? smiling face

Hi Arciniega, I think that the Kaplan books, Goljan, First Aid and the QBank is more than enough for step 1. I dont recomend you to go out and buy other books because or you'll end up spending too much time in each subject or you are not going to read everything, and believe me, by the time you are done with all the steps and the application and interviews procces, you are going to regreat spending those 20 dlls in a book that you didn't read. Anyway, good luck and remember that you can count with us here at the forum for any help we can give to you.

  #599

Chemamr, yes, I think you are fine where you are, but like I said, I ts just what I think, I dont have too much experience on it.wink

  #600

Hi Lorena !!

I just read that you are in IM ! It feels good when one of your "paisanas" it's succesful nod as you are being right now!! Hurray for you !! smiling face and a lot of Congratulations for you ... let us know how're you doing on the summer when you start ok?

Lore.. I also noticed that you posted some of the material you used on the step one, And there's a question that I want to ask you if it's not to much problem ... You said that you did the Kaplan web preparation, is this the same as the kaplan medical books?shaking head Because I just bought them from ebay , I have the 4 volumes plus the Qbank ... is it enought with that? Do you think that I could use the web prep as well? mmm those sound like 3 questions right? grin jejeje ... It's just that I really want to do everything right So I can have a good score on my first exam because you know what they say.. that the step One it's the hardest of all to pass.. what do you guys think of that? raised eyebrow

Well Lore, wish you the best always and have fun in your residency !! wink yupiii nod
