Hello everyone,

First of all congratulations to laloblum for his residency position.

I think the topic that has been discussed is an excellent one.

I went to Houston for the weekend with my uncle who is a plastic surgeon and he took me to visit the Medical Center. It is simply breathtaking. There are more than 53 institutions comitted to health care in a few blocks. It is considered one of the biggest medical centers in the world. I got to visit Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Visiting such a site, made me realize that in one of those buildings is where I want to be. I want to do my residency in the United States and specifically in Houston. As many of you have mentioned, it is a troublesome path. It is a colossal challenge that only a few mexicans venture into, and fewer make it through. However, many people have demonstrated that it can be done. Even though sometimes the material seems too much, too hard or maybe the circumstances seem too stressful (as doing a residency in Mexico and studying for the USMLE), it can be done. My grandfather was a resident in Cornell University and Affilliated Hospitals in New York and my uncle was a general surgery resident at Baylor College of Medicine and Affilliated Hospitals. Both of them graduated from a small university called Universidad de Guadalajara. Thanks to both of their efforts I have been able to define my goal from the 1st year of med school, which is to pass the USMLE and apply for a residency position in the United States. In my opinion going through all this trouble to pass these hard exams only shows our determination to succeed, to become better physicians and better human beings. I am very proud of my country (Mexico) and of my Universidad de Guadalajara and thankful for all they have given me. Now its my turn to show the world what a ¨tapatio¨ is really made of, and how Universidad de Guadalajara has driven students.

Thanks to this forum I have ¨met¨ other brilliant students who have already passed these exams (chema, lorena, laloblum, etc) and I would just like to congratulate you, since you are also role models for other starting students like me. (4th semester) Thank you and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Amado

Mxshrink and Medusin, thank you for your congratulations.

Hey Mxshrink, one of the Program Directors who interviewed me for IM studied at your school UdM. smiling face Congrats for your psych interviews and the best of luck for the match!!

Medusin, it is nice to know more about you. You'll do great because you are focused, inspired and proud of your background. Keep on the good enthusiastic attitude and hard work.

"my .02" is from the expression "my 2 cents" ...meaning "my small contribution" "my grain of salt" etc.

  #485

i also had the trouble of friends and partying in monterrey, but its a fun city. i was in houston recently and checked out the health science center and a couple books stores and it is awsome, overwhelming and beautiful. no wonder most ex heads of state go there for their regular checkups. but for me personally i wouldn't like to practice in this state especially in houston cause its a little too conservative for my taste.

  #486

ok, thank you mxshrink and lorena

Interesting article I came upon while surfing the NEJM. If it does not work just log on to NEJM and type USMLE. The title of the article is Coming to America —International Medical Graduates in the United States.

Hello everybody from Mexico!!!

I graduated in UDG too, am very happy to read all your messages and good news about all you. I will apply for the S1 this year. It has been difficult to me study and work full time in the USA but I will try. I knew all the teachers you were talking about it, and I miss too the "tacos" and " tortas" in Guadalajara. I miss too the CUCS and HCG. I always have good memories about my carreer there. Thank you for share your experiences!!!

  #495

keep writing here exonstep

i´m from UdG too so i know what you are talking about and things you might remember in our CUCS, HCG, the clerkship, etc.

Welcome exonstep,

I am glad there are more mexicans participating in this forum (specially from U de G)

In other things, I was looking at some other IMG´s forums and was wondering how people with USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores with more than 97 can be rejected at certain residencies like surgery. What else is needed? Letters of recommendation? Research experience? Observerships in the US?

It seems so discouraging that people with these scores get rejected.

hi Medusin, you can check a topic i have just done in Match Support called " Competitiveness of Residencies". The more competitive the higher score they look for. But in general, you need letters of recommendation by US doctors, research or observerships or clinical experience in US (better), AND some hospitals only want green card holders or US citizens. Although it varies, one of the most important (or the most important) is your scores. Yes, it´s discouraging but we can do it, we must struggle for a while to do it (why struggle?, because we must get these things to be more desirable for the residency programs), that´s the only detail. I hope this helps in someway.

oh, another factor is the number of years since you graduate, i think the most common cut off is no more than 3-5 years since your graduation. But it varies, again, there are A LOT OF hospitals in the USA and some of them are very strict, very difficult to get in if you are IMG but there are other that are IMG friendly, more open to us.

It's hard to predict what program directors of the residency programs really want. Because it contradictory from one program to another. For example, I know programs that reviewed applications of people with 99 over both steps and they didn't invite them for interviews... the problem, they think those kind of people will have a hard time socializing with the rest of the team and cause some problems.. Other program director were looking for graduates who had completed their residency at their home country.. so they were old grads...

As you can see its not a gold standard what they want...

But the things they ALWAYS look, is scores above 200 even above 210... number of attempts... and then look the rest of your application... because your scores are the program's screening method... so people with 99/99 always have trouble finding the residency of their choise...

What can you do about this... Nothing. Just apply to the residencies of your choice and some IMG friendly programs as a back up... but as I always have told you... its hard but not impossible.

grin

Arriva las chivas, si senor!! nod
