My pleasure spit, but it was you who did all the work... yeah I told you, it is quite normal!! So when are you moving to Houston? I'll be arriving there on June 2, we will deffinitely meet!! Let me know if you need advice on housing.... I might now a girl who is looking for a rommie but I bet you need a boy.... let me see what I can find... I'll let you know. Depending on how much you want to expend I can recommend some apartment complexes that are 5 mins away from TMC plus I recommend to get one that is close to the metrorail station, I used it all the time, it was pretty fast, convenient and cheap hahaha(yes I did not pay for it jijijiji a la mexican!!) I will pay for it now that I'm a resident though!! hahaha

So medusin could not make it? that is actuallly very weird... hope he is ok.

Thanks Karime, chemamr, noxar, lorena, damian for all your kind words.

Dear Enrique where

I'll be seeing you guys around!

2008 MATCH PERFORMANCE -- NUMBER OF IMGS MATCHING INCREASES

For the sixth consecutive year, the number of first-year (PGY-1)
residency positions offered through the Match increased. A total of
22,240 first-year positions were offered in the 2008 Match, held earlier
this month. This represents an increase of 395 positions compared to
last year and an increase of 1,638 positions since 2002.

The number of IMGs who matched to first-year positions increased by 122
compared to 2007. Of the 10,304 IMGs who participated in the 2008 Match,
4,649* (45.1%) matched. In the 2007 Match, 4,527 (46.7%) IMG
participants were matched to first-year positions.

There was a decrease in the number of matches for non-U.S. citizen IMGs
and an increase in the number of matches for U.S. citizen IMGs.

Of the 7,335 IMG participants who were not U.S. citizens, 3,108 (42.4%)
obtained first-year positions. The number of non-U.S. citizen IMGs who
obtained positions in 2008 decreased by 72 compared to last year. This
is the first year that there has been a decrease in the number of
non-U.S. citizen IMGs matching to first-year positions since 2001.

Of the 2,969 U.S. citizen IMG participants, 1,541 (51.9%) were matched
to first-year positions, an increase of 194 over last year. This is the
fifth consecutive year that there has been an increase in the number of
U.S. citizen IMGs matching to first-year positions.

*Note: The total number of IMGs who will fill PGY-1 positions for the
2008-2009 academic year will be higher than this number, since a
significant number of IMGs obtain PGY-1 positions outside of the Match.

Hey guys, just a quick FYI: for those of you already doing residency in the US under a J-1 visa, regarding the statement of need, you only need to get once (at the beginning of your residency) unless you switch programs. That means that you don't have to get a new one every year when applying for the new ds-2019. I just found out that today and I think that's pretty convenient because coordinating that every year gets tricky since it has to be picked up in Mexico city. Hope this is useful!

  #3860

hi guys hope youre doing great whenever you are..... I would like to now which material you used to study for the CK????? any recommendations.... well thank you in advance....

wish you the best!

Yeah a bit quiet this days!! Well I'll break the silence!! after all I always received the "perico" stamp ever since I was in kindergarden jajajaja!! I think things have not changed that much.... or at all! Well guys I'm actually trying to study because I'm going for my final battle against the USMLE's... yes I'll take Step 3 on May 7th and 8th. I think I underestimated this exam and it is tougher than I expected. I did not prepare as much but I'm tired of studying and I thought... it's now or never!! I don't want to be stressed about it during residency so I decided to go for it! Although I'm kind of getting scared and thinking that I might not be ready for such a challenge especially for the ccs part and I might have done better if I waited for a little more of in-patient contact during residency.... but like I said.... I'm tired of this thing I've been quasi-studying for step 3 during this whole year (meaning on and off during interview season)... so what the heck!!! hahahaha I just hope I pass it with dignity!! that's all I'm really hoping for right now!

Anyways I'm really tired of studying... I'm not as efficient as I used to be, plus I have a lot of things going on beside the exam that don't allow me to concentrate as much. I've been doing a lot of paperwork, looking for an apartment, getting everything ready because I'm moving to Houston on June the 2nd, and a whole lot of personal problems that keep me busy..... I feel as if my life is a messed up puzzle and I'm trying to pick up the pieces and make something out of it!!! oh Lord!!! anyways, this last couple of weeks have been really tough but the way I see it is... I've been under really tough times before and with the help of God I will be able to pull this mess off too!

Oh well!! I've rambled a lot for one day!!! I hope everyone else vents their frustrations and problems as I have... I actually find it very relaxing!! I just hope I could talk about all kinds of things but I guess I'll have to find another forum to do that!! hahahaha grin

See you guys soon!! Hope I get to hear from most of you!! Hey Damian so what are you up to these days? Later guys and please wish me luck!! (I'll really need it this time!! rolling eyes )

Hello everybody,

I am studying full time for CK at a Kaplan center. I have all the lecture notes, adn video lectures, do you guys think that is enough? What other books should I buy?
I am starting to get a little bit anxious because I would like to take STEP 2 late June or early July.
Any suggestions?

OK I am going back to study...

bye guys

  #3866

Hey Glo,

You will do just fine is just papers and protocol and things like that. You are a pretty smart lady doc.

Actually I am a little bit sad because I did not get California even though I went for a second look at one the programs there. On the other hand I am very grateful because I have something which in the end of three years is going to let me practice medicine again.Financially is going to be very tough because they will payme half of what they are going to pay you in Texas. So basically I am getting some loans in order to make it. I think already told you that my future wife is from canada. She is an RN here in the states working under TN Visa and she won't be able to work there because she does not speak Spanish(in Puerto Rico one needs to be bilingual) but we will figure out something together. Oh and I am taking Step 3 the first week of june I had scheduled it the same dates you have but I did not feel ready for it ,so I went ahead and re-scheduled it. That is my life in a nutshell lately between the stress of work, money, wedding, underpay PGY1 and step 3 it is tough... On top of that in order to get the temporal licence to practice medicine in Puerto Rico is not like here in the states that the process is done mostly by fax or e-mail or mail. There they not even answer the phone so you have to show up there in person. Thank God I did that last year I went like 8 times in 3 months (I spent aorund 8,000 to get it) A huge huge but huge headache. Actually I still need to go one more time . I am going Next week just for 2 days because I need to focus on Step # 3.

I feel very bless ... I am really thankful to God and my fiance and my family that I have a position because being an old grad and with my attempts and scores it is very tough to get anything at all.

I will pray for you. But let me tell you something ...you won't have any problems to pass step 3 and I never wrong about things like that . Recently I helped( a little bit) some people passing step 2 cs and they both pass.

I am happy for you GLO you have a week left for the exam just do some last minute reviews and you will do great.

Best of luck to you. ( I am sorry for my spelling and grammar I hope you get the idea)

ZAA,

I will recommend to you to complement your studies with usmleword questions and perhaps First Aid but do not add to much stuff stick to one source and practice hard. But you need to practice questions they boost your confidence and also prepare you to read fast and answer questions under the same stress and of course they gave you endurance for the exam.

Good Luck to you

hi guys... good luck GLO with your step3 and your personal life grin thanks for thelast mail you sent me, you solved most of my doubts youre a really really kind person thanks for everything,i wish you the best. wink

actually i have a problem, in reality is not a problem but i cant stop thinking about it.... all my life i've known what i wanted, I knew since i was a little boy that i wanted to be a surgeon im trying to say that im the kind of person that knows exactly what i want, but right now i cant figure out what residency i should choose, the problem is that i have loved all my classes and clinical rotations, for sure i dont want to be a radiologist, pathologist, anesthesiologist or ophthalmologist.... but the rest of the specialties appeal me....
i want to be a todologist hahaha and see every kind of cases and patients (from neonates to elder persons), because i dont want to end up bored of seeing the same each day of the rest of my life, i want something exciting and thrilling, i want to expend time with myself, my wife and my kinds, i'd like to do clinical research, publicate and teach, i know it sounds impossible but i want to be able to do surgery but at the same time i want to give care to non surgical population, like psychiatric patients.... so WHAT DO YOU THINK? am i screwed and i must make up my mind? but i really want to be a little bit of everything, ob/gyn, em, im, peds, surgeon, psych, etc etc sad
so i guess a family practice in a rural area resembles my description dont you think?
wel anyway thanks for your help in advance wink

jaja nice post spit. Actually I have the same problem...sometimes I liker Neurosurgery, sometimes i like Cardiothoracic surgery....the rest of the time I like internal medicine and all of its subspecialties. Can anyone comment on how they chose their specialty and why? I think it could be helpful. Thanks!

What Starts Here Changes The World

  #3871

spitmetal, Well, I think it has to do with how you see yourself working as a Doctor in the short and long run. Family practice, Pediatrics and Internal medicine are quite interesting because most of the time you will be a first contact doctor who will diagnose and manage the patient first. IM has a broad research field and you can choose many fellowships also, the same goes for pediatrics.

Surgical fields are more technical rather than focusing in the patient as a whole (though sometimes they need IM or Pediatrics to assess a potential surgical patient) , also they earn more money and there's this feeling that surgical field is more prestigious than primary care (I strongly disagree).

You have to answer this to yourself:

1-By choosing a specialty, who am I trying to please? Me, my family or friends?
Of course, you will please yourself when you please family or friends if that's what you are looking for, besides I don't t think any specialty is that boring if you happened to choose the wrong one.
2- Do I like to have continuos contact with a patient?
3-Do I like to stand hours in the operating room?
4-Will I like what I'll do or what I'll earn (educational, enonomic or socially)?

I hope this helps.

  #3872

Hey guys!...I've been struggling with my IWA...
Finally I paid my first step yesterday!!!! I'm so happy...but a little scared 'cos time is running for real right nowconfused

Nice post Damian, very very admirable all that courage and consistency.

Glo....you should already taking step 3 right now, these days, so....best wishes my friend as you know...

Zaa, Good luck for your Step 2 exam.

You know, I'm also kind of confused about time....I know my english is improving every day with every word I learned, but I don't know If I should apply (if everything is going on in the right place) for the 2010 match.....I think it's the best thing, I must hurry...my eligibility period is oct-dec 2008....then if God let me (and of course if I keep going) I'd take the step 2 in april-jun 2009, then CS and maybe it's a little bit tight on time, to get an observership on july-sept, to send all the documentation after that (LORs, USCE)
Any advice?....Y know once I arrived at US, my english will improve dramatically, I think the most important fear of me is just that!!!!!.....to think I won't be able to mastering as a professional the language and, maybe I'm just hurry up things.....but I also think pressure works better than lazy long times.....What you think?

Ok spit.......for sure Internado really change our point of view concerning specialities. When I was taking my basic sciences I prefered immunology or pathology, then...I turned to the clinical area snd....maybe I was considering pediatrics, rheumatology, or gastro....In my internado I bet you I'd choose surgery....specially vascular surgery, but right know while I'm doing my social service....I can realize the first thing I thougth (during basic areas) likes me more.....so for now I think about pathology...strongly.......Do you want to hear a confession?sticking out tongue...I also applied for ENARM, just in case I didn't pass step 1 (:nonosmiling face I can do curriculum and then try again, but I hope in God this is not going to be the issue.....(pray guys, pray please to our dreams become true, obviously as I said before, it's up to you, How can I dare to blame God or destiny about our acts.....as somebody says....you study...you pass...so simple)...

So, Spit, that's a little history about my decisions concerning choosing specialty.....All I can tell you for now....DON'T WORRY, you will know what you want until your social service...but I can tell you too, many people in the middle of residency even a fellow....sometimes ask themselves...."what if I".........????? Every human kind do that, the secret is "Enjoy every second in your life" nod

See you guys! keep posting

Damian: jeje, smiling face, thanks for your words. yes, I'll be senior in a couple of months, I think I'm ready, more responsibility because now you are the team leader but I think it has been enough time being an intern, now it's time for more... in other words, I learned what an intern must know, now it's time to learn the 2nd year level.

Spitmetal: I like the approach of Keller, write several questions on a paper like those and more that you can figure it out (what you would like to do; lifestyle; family issues; OR or wards or outpatient or etc; speciality or subspeciality at the end; etc...) and then it's time to ask yourself what you want. it's completely normal to have doubts about your future field and it's ok to change your mind later on as well. At this point in time, I have known MANY residents (in different programs) that wanted to study something else and now they are studying something different and they are happy with their last decision.

Spitmetal: and you'll have a better idea when you are doing your INTERNADO because you'll be exposed to almost all of the specialities. good luck...
