Hey Tochtli!! That is so sweet of you!! and deffinitely mexican girls rule!! Jorge: No news for now, most days I am very calm and together but I get those days in which I start freaking out and getting depressed because of all the pressure that this uncertainty brings.... this weekend was hard for me, all of my friends are gone to start their residency at really great hospitals in Mexico and I felt somehow desperate because I still don't know what is going to happen with my life! I started thinking a lot of things and making tons of math in my mind, trying to think of my percentual chances of matching!! jajaja poor me I don't even know math!! I felt sooo sad and I cried until I was tired.... I'm not going to lie....... but! I think it was very therapeutic because I have a newfound strenght now to get me through this last month of uncertainty! I truly believe that God has a plan for me and I will trust him on that! So all I have to do now is wait and be patient and positive! Sometimes is really hard, especially for IMG's!! Only one month to gooooo!!! I'm telling you guys my story so that you have a close feel of what participating in the match is for us IMG's, I used to think that exams are the difficult part but this is by far the most difficult thing I had to go through! But somehow I believe that this road is tough and deffinitely the toughest that us Mexicans can go for but I strongly believe that hard work always pays off so I hope my story is one of success and we can all see that everything is possible if you are willing to pay the price! I will deffinitely share the news with you guys when I get them!! See you soon!

hahaha It did go crazy! Hope this time won't happen the same Well noxar I did receive a couple of pre-match offers but I did not take them because it was not what I was looking for. Plus I had 8 other interviews including 3 interviews in Houston which is the place I would love to stay in, and they did not offer pre-matches, so it was a no brainer for me I did not even stop to think about my decision, I knew I had to go all the way! I don't see it as a brave thing I see it as the best decision for my case in particular. For me a prematch is something you take if it's within your first 4 choices and since they weren't I decided to wait and try for something better. I know I may end up like "el perro de las dos tortas" but "el que no arriesga no gana!" asi que haber que pasa!!! hahaha Plus you know what guys? I have always felt that God ha been with me every step of this journey and I have felt him guiding me and supporting me, opening doors and hearts for me. I remember the day I saw that 99 in my step 2 ck report I cried because I knew that it was something I could have not done myself!! I know God guide me through that exam and gave me the wisdom to score like that!! I truly could not believe it, I did not expect that at all!! I cried and thought "Thank you God! This is a gift from you, I know it is your way of saying "I'm with you and I will open doors you never though could be open for you" I knew that score will help me a lot and it did! So I trust him deeply I know He has plans for me and I know He would approve my decision of waiting because "Good things come to those who wait"! (I Hope!! ) Oh well sorry for all my phylosophy and my rambling!! I'll see everyone soon! thanks for all your support!

Hey Jorge Pre-match is basically an offered position before the match. In the near future while having your interviews some programs will offer you a position before Match(which is in March). Example Jorge has 12 interviews in different states of the country in the third interview the Program Director liked Jorge very much so they call him the same day to offer him a position just right in there. So then you have a decision to make;Either you take the offer and cancel the rest of the interviews or you decline the offer thinking that you can have a better option later on. It is something that you need to worry when the time comes. Most of the people with regular credentials will acepted the position because Match is really unpredictible, but great candidates such GLO with great scores and usce experience have great chances to match with their most favorite program. Go to NRMP.org to find out more about this game that sooner or later you will have to play.

Jorge, Mine is a long story. I am an old IMG graduated in 1998 from UAT then I went back to Mexicali Baja California to do my internship (General Hospital) and then Cananea,Sonora for my Servicio Social after that I practice couple of years as a General Practioner then I passed the National Exam in Mexico twice last time for Radiology. I did all my interviews and I was about to start my Radiology residency back in 2000 in Monterrey Nuevo Leon, I called them to give up my position (Sometimes I look back in time and regret it so much that in my life, but what can I do now ....I made a decision and It wasn't the right one) .So then decide to take the exams(USMLE) while working full time as a telemetry tech in California, also participating in some research studies, so took me along time and sacrifice to pass the exams ( all pass all the exams in 2005) and still here . Lots of hard work, patience and sacrifice and perseverance keep me here still standing up and fighting .Last year I start an Internship in Puerto Rico in an ACGME accredited program which was extremely hard to get money and time wise .Thank God, My family and my Beloved Girlfriend/Fiance' that I secure a position in Puerto Rico for this coming July. During my long journey I met a lot of people from different countries such Egypt, China, India, Latin America, Romania, Russia. Some people struggle like me, a lot of those gave up after trying several years some others continue like me and others still trying. I strongly believe that this dream it is doable, but to succeed it is important to have good background studies and be able to get all the support need it, for instance money for the process to dedicate 100% to study, have a good grasp of English language (which I still trying to improve all the time) and participate actively in a forum like this helps a lot. I did back in 2002 2003 in another forum. The best time to achieve this is at your age. Please follow GLO advice about when to start studying and all that stuff. She is a good example of how to do it nice and timely. Good Luck to you and every Mexican trying to achieve this extremely tough but doable dream. I had great opportunities in Mexico (besides Radiology residency I could have taken my Dad practice) but I was looking for challenge. I hope one day that the great country of Mexico becomes a good place to stay for everyone. If someone wants to listen to this it is very interesting (it is in Spanish). It last 36 mins but it is worth it. http://www.coparmex.org.mx/nuevositio/videoStream...

Well Jorge, Damian is right. Pre-match is a call or an email you receive a short time after an interview regularly by the PD him or herself asking you to sign a contract with them and forget about the match. There are programs who offer them to some of the applicants, others give out all of their seats before the match so they don't even go through the match and some don't give a single prematch. It all depends on the policies of the particular program. You should also know that pre-match offers are only for IMG's. There are programs who have a fixed number of pre-matches to give to IMG's so they choose their favorites and offer it to them, that way they know they will get the best possible IMG's. Pre-matches are a sure bet for you and for them. If they offer one is obviously because they liked you very much. Many IMG's choose to go for the pre-match because that way they will not have to wait and play this game which is almost like gambling like I am having to do right now. Others decline pre-match offers and go for the match, it all depends on what you want. Some applicants are just waiting to get one to withdraw from the match, others like I did hated to receive pre-match offers because you already know you will not accept it and know that your chances of having that program as an option during the match are slim since you already said no to them and they might not even include you on their ROL. The way I see it is that if you receive a pre-match offer from one of your favorite 3 you should deffinitely consider it, otherwise you should also think this: probably I will be selling myself short just because I am insecure!! if this people like me enough to offer me a pre-match I am probably as desirable for other programs (that are more desirable to me!).... so I think sometimes IMG's sell themself short, and programs take advantage of that!! And many of the programs that tend to give a lot of prematches are insecure theirselves and do this because they might go unmatched or because they might not get as good applicants because they know that if you go through the match you will probrably end up in another program of your choice. I hope I have given you a good glimpse of what pre-matches are all about. All types of programs offer them: from low-tighter to really great programs, although most of the great programs offer only a couple to really outstanding candidates or to spouses of someone inside the program or they usually don't give any. So beware of programs that give out almost all of their positions in pre-matches.... no good!!

I had 3 interviews in the Houston area. UT Houston, UTMB-Galveston and Methodist Houston. Any of them is great but the first 2 have Rheum fellowship so I would love to stay there. I'm trying to remain positive but there are too many great applicants and it's sad but logical that programs rather have an AMG with lower profile and much lower scores than a great IMG just because he or she is an IMG.... I hated when some people especially AMG's see us like we are so little.... I believe we are all the same we just went to med school in a different country but hey medicine is the same everywhere! I strongly believe that we have the same capabilities than any AMG... come on! I could have been a freakin' AOA if I had given the chance but we don't have that in Mexico!! hahaha On the other hand, I've also met the dumbest immaturest AMG's during my IV trail!! I used to think they are all geniouses... NOT! there are some who are really great but not all of them are, that's something you'll learn later on. So yes, they will always prefer to have AMG's because it pumps their program status even if they are not so great (for AMG's a program that has a lot of IMG's is not good... ) and they will also take US citizens or GC holder IMG's over IMG's who need a visa.... it's sad but that's the way the game works. BUT!! The system is also very noble to a lot of us and many get to "colarse" (could not find the right word for this hahaha) and once inside everybody is treated equally so that is great! Oh well!! Let's hope for the best!! But yes I'm sharing this info so that you start seeing how the system works. Don't take it as a complaint take as an insider scoop because I am super happy with the opportunity that I have been given and I could never complaint! It's just a review!! See ya soon!
