Hey guys!!!

How are you doing? It's good that some of you are with the interviews, I really hope you can get the best for you and you can achieve your goals.

Hey Hector, I'm from UMSNH too, class '98-'03, let me know more about you.

Hey guys I was with the IWA on-line registration stuff, I was almost finishing my registration but then I was freaked out when I read this:

"You should also note that by signing and submitting the Certification Statement associated with the USMLE application, you authorize ECFMG to transmit the information contained in your application, or that otherwise may become available to ECFMG, to "any federal, state or local governmental department or agency, to any hospital or any other organization or individual who, in the judgment of ECFMG, has a legitimate interest in such information."

And like I don't have my visa now (I'm trying to get a tourist visa), I'm going to have my appointment until Jan 25th, I read this at the us embassy about visas:

"Today, as in the past, most travelers to the U.S. must obtain a visa. The process still includes application forms and interviews as well as the collection and cross-checking of names in a highly sophisticated U.S. Government database. As a visa applicant today, it is important that you recognize that these name-checking and registration processes are necessary and crucial elements helping to protect our citizens and our visitors."

So, only because of that I didn't finish my registration. Because I'm afraid about not getting my visa if they find out that I'm applying for the ECFGM certification, I'll appreciate your help guys, I'm just going to wait for your advice to decide if I keep going with the process or if I should wait until I get my visa.

Thank you guys, and I'll look forward to hearing from you. Good luck to everybody.

Jaime, I have no experience on that, but I dont think it will affect your visa

Hi to all;
I'm what they say an old FMG graduated from the Universidad Autonoma de Puebla in 98. I'm so happy to see there are Mexican docs here. I'm currently studying for step one this will be my second attempt as I took it to see what was asked (yes I was very naive!!). To my disadvantage and didn't know this really counted against you anyway you live and you learn. So glad that there are other women in this forum, any advice is appreciated.

My goal is to apply for the 2007 match; hopefully I can get through all the steps on time.

Take care

Confe (with hope)wink

Confe, Im sure you can manage to get through the steps for 2007. You just have to have your mind set that you are going to spend a lot of time studying this year.! I would advise you to star now!.

  #332

Hi, everybody. I'm so glad I have found M.D.'s from Mexico. I started to study for step one few days ago. I'm not sure about the books I have to study. I got Kaplan's notes and Goljan's patho, and First aid, but I don't know if that is enough. Could somebody help me here. And Confe like you I'm a woman who plans to apply for the residency in 2007, so maybe we can help and support each other

  #333

Thanks Mxshrink for the advice, I've been studying for the past month and hopefully plan to take step one in mid march. It has been hard to sit and study but so far have put in at least five hours a day. I'm doing 50 q's every other day from the BSS (quite hard!) and listening to goljan audio and notes. Nice to see that I'm not the only one starting this journey , welcome aboard Lucasdoctor, here is an ideal of what I plan to study but am open to other suggestions

My main sources are:

Kaplan live lecture notes 2002 (hand me down for a friend)

Goljan audio/notes 2002

Clinical Microbiology made ridiculously simple

First Aid 2005

Questions from Board Simulator Series (1997) not sure if this are the latest version

Plan to buy Kaplan qbank (3 months)

Take care

Hey everyone, how's it going? Just got done today with another interview; have done 3 so far. They have all gone pretty well. The common denominator is that they all have been very laid back. No hard questions, no ethical questions. Pretty much I've just had to talk about myself and my interests. I think you guys shouldn't worry; just dress well, talk well, practice your answers and be friendly to ABSOLUTELY everyone. Prepare questions to ask faculty and residents, that's very important. But be sure you know who you are asking what; for example, don't ask a faculty member about salary or vacation time; ask them about research opportunities, electives, etc. Other than that you guys should be just fine.

Chema, as we discussed earlier, I think that the best thing you could do, before thinking about getting usce, is passing step 3 and getting ACLS certified in the US (according to what I know, getting ACLS certified in Mexico won't work). Once you do this, you should be in better shape to be eligible to get an externship (which is harder of course); however, I insist; don't underestimate what an observership can do for you. In my own experience, participating in observerships and performing very well in them has been priceless in my application/interviewing process.

Welcome girls; confe, I only used kaplan books, first aid and qbank (essential) and it worked out just fine; I do remember reading somewhere that it was not that advisable to be answering questions before being ready for them because, otherwise, it can be hard to deal with bad scores at first. However, if it's working for you, go ahed; everyone has a different way of learning. Hope this helps!

Lorena, good luck tomorrow; just relax, the worst thing you can do is get nervous; one thing though: under no circumstances be late.

Take care everyone!

hi confe &lucas.....im planning to make it for the 2007 match too... im going for pathology...

confe..u look in prety good shape for the step 1 with that material...those lectures are really helpful... i posted my step 1 experience some time ago..hopefully it can be of some help for u two....posts like that sure helped me a lot.... made me gain confidence...

http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/comments.php?id=2...

i dunno if ure currently working or what amount of time do you have daily to study....but making a daily schedule and sticking to it is definitively a very efficient way to make a succesful step 1...or any test for that matter...best of luck!....

Hi to my friends and to the new menbers.

Well i am going for the match 2007 too. Not sure what specialty yet.

For step 1 in my opinion kaplan notes and first aid are enough o and of course goljan for patho. The thing is that when you have abunch of different books it's hard to read them all.

I have not had any luck in finding a job, but as long as i am studying, i don't think i am wasting my time.

Well i got to get back to studying for step 2 ck, take care all of you and you know i wish you the best.

Hi everybody, Thank you Confe for sharing your sources. Also, thank you everybody for your welcome. I was reading that the qbank is pretty good to study, where can I find it and who is the author? To be honest, i find this web very encouraging since now I know that I'm not the only one studying for these test and very afraid of them at the same time.

drgaxmac have you taken step 1? If so, how long did you study for it? And how many hours per day? I want to do my best to pass it right away, but I'm so scared.nod

See you later guys and study really hard!!!!

  #338

Lucasdoctor, Hi!!, good luck on your study. You can find the Qbank at the Kaplan homepage, its an internet program. Some manage to get it on CD, maybe on ebay or something like that. Good luck.

How are our fellow Mexicans doing on their interviews??, Im having my first one next week, please post experiences!!.

  #339

Hi all,
Good luck with those of you with interviews!! It is also nice to see that others are going for the 2007 match. If all goes well I plan to apply to Family Medicine but that's a little to far for me now, first I should concentrate on passes the boards.

Wow, great tips Lorena...I will definitely look into doing the ACLS and PALS to get something valuable on my CV.

Hey Lucasdoc, how is the studying going? I've been trying to sit down and do more hours a day at least 7 this week.

thank you guys for the warm welcome

Well I wish you the best of luck and, please, wish me luck!

Hello averybody,

Chema, check hospital de el carmen. I think there ACLS is approve here in the U.S. if not check a hospitals web from here in the u.s. and it will say when they are having a ACLS. It is not that expensive like hospital de el carmen's but you still have to pay for the plane ticket.

Good luck to all in the interviews!!!! Good luck on Step 2 CK!!!!!!!!

Chemamr, some advise to take a portfolio with your papers. Do you know what do you have to take?

  #346

i think they ask you for specific things. Iīm still waiting for my package of the interview. I guess all your application, copies of CV, PS, transcript, extra photos, copies of LORs, something like that.

Dudes:

I've been to a couple of interviews the past two weeks and honestly I would say that roughly 20-25% of the people attending the interview carried a portfolio, I personally didn't, besides they give u a packet when you get there also with a folder. If at all, make a list of questions to ask. My .02.

Good luck.

Hello everybody!!

WOW, i am amazed and happy to see our mexican community growing. A big welcome to the new members!!!

I have been away for some weeks and i really missed you. These last days i have been busy with interviews - attended 4 so far and i still have 5 more , i am in California and i dont have a laptop ( i hope i gte one for christmas) so thats why i havent been in touch .

The 4 interviews i have attended so far were very laid back, i didnt carry ANY documents with me , neither a white coat , none of the applicants did, so you have an idea how laid back everything was.

I dressed up nicely, bought a nice silk blouse to wear with my grey bussiness suit, i must say i felt very professional cool grin. LOL.

The advice i have for you guys is nothing new but i will stress this up: RELAX, Enjoy the interview process, SMILE all the time!!!, show confidence without being arrogant, remember they want a person to work with them for 3 or 4 years so they absolutely must like you... be honest and refreshing. THey didnt ask me medical or ethical questions but at one place i was interviewed by 5 doctors -residents and attendings- by the end of the day i was tired of answering the same questions but managed to keep smiling wink.

Questions i remember i have been asked during my interviews:

what are you looking for in a program?

why did you get interessted in this program?

Why internal medicine?

Tell me your strong points , your weak points?

Tell me about the most stressful situation you have been in, and what did you do?

What do you want to do after you finish your residency?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

How comfortable do you feel with the american medical system?

What experience do you have with the american medical system?

and some other questions about my CV ...like what did you do these last 3 years? what did you do after graduatuion? are you planning to move to california? etc etc

If i remember more i will write about that later on.

I wish you all the best of luck in this process in whatever stage you are, enjoy everything you do and you 'll do fine.

echenle ganas!!

Lorena
