jajajaja "study service" jajaja I deffinitely had one too!!! But I am glad I did it eventhough my whole year was studying, I got to do the 3 steps in one year and if you plan wisely I bet you guys will be able to do it too. Talking about social service I am very happy because this was my very last day and tomorrow morning (or should I say today) I will take my final report so that I can get my "liberacion".... life is getting sweeter by the minute....
About the underground clinical vignnettes a friend of mine borrow them to me for ck (I didn't see the ones for step 1) and I read them but they were not as good as kaplan and deffinitely not needed for the exam, I bet the ones for step 1 are just the same.

GLO MD !

It seems like you are pretty familiar with the " MATCH THING "so I have some questions for you wink

Can I apply with my step 1 and CK score without CS or is it better to wait for CS score ?

Can you please tell me what do I need to start the process including the paperworks and all ?

When is the latest date should I take CS if I wanna be in good shape for 2008 match ?

Please , do reply and thanks in advance !

Im gonna take the liberty to try to answer this one, clotaire....

Can I apply with my step 1 and CK score without CS or is it better to wait for CS score ? <---WELL, THOSE ARE 2 DIFFERENT QUESTIONS AND BOTH ANSWERS ARE:YES.....U CAN THEORETICALLY APPLY WITH ONLY ONE EXAM.....BUT BEING CERTIFIED AT THE TIME OF THE APPLICATION MEANS A LOT FOR MANY PROGRAMS (FOR MOST PROGRAMS, I SHOULD SAY)...

Can you please tell me what do I need to start the process including the paperworks and all ?
THE FIRST THING I REMEMBER DOING, WAS GETTING MY TOKEN....IT WAS ABOUT $75 AND I GOT IT IN EARLY JULY......THAT WAY U CAN START WORKING ON YOUR FILE ON ERAS....LOAD UP YOUR DOCUMENTS , INCLUDING THE LOR'S AND PREPARING UR CV AND PS..AFTER THAT, EVERYTHING WOULD COME MORE EASILY..
PIECE OF ADVISE GUYS..DONT LET UR PS FOR THE LAST MINUTE...ONCE U WRITE IT, THERE ARE A TON OF IDEAS U GET AFTER 2-3 DAYS, AND IF YOU DONT HAVE THAT TIME BECAUSE U DID IT ALL ON THE LAST MINUTE, ULL REGRET IT.....SO HAVE THAT IN MIND.....

When is the latest date should I take CS if I wanna be in good shape for 2008 match ? IF I REMEMBER CORECTLY, THE CS TOOK 6 WEEKS FOR ME TO REPORT....SO...IF UR "DEADLINE" IS SEP1ST....TRY TO TAKE THE EXAM BEFORE JULY 15...THAT IS IF U WANNA APPLY EARLY....WHICH OF COURSE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.....THIS ONE I LEARNED IT THE HARD WAY....SO KEEP THAT IN MIND

Guys,
Is there any other state asking for extra paperwork besides California?

  #3156

I agree with noxar in every way. Deffinitely you need to apply early (early sept) to get more interviews and remember the law of " as early as possible and as complete as possible" I belive you will do your cs in early august? remember it takes about 2 months (about 6-8 weeks) and right now it will take a little longer since everybody is doing the exams to get the match... last date to do your cs prior to the match is 2 months before march 15....but deffinitely recommend at latest early december. since you are an IMG having the cs is very important to get interviews so I think in your case is better to wait... I don't think you will get many interviews being an IMG without cs... I mean I already have all my exams but since I am on the paperwork for my medical diplomma and still don't have my ECFMG certificate....even that might draw me back from interviews so if I were you I might wait for my results from cs but DO IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!
What you need: Token at oasis as noxar said.... 2.- Get you myERAS and start filling your application. In myERAS you can fill you CAF (common application), your CV and you can upload your personal statement. (you can do it in word and then copy paste it) 3.- The documments that you will have to send are: LOR's, most programs ask for US doctors LOR's at least 3, every program can get a maximum of 4..you can use different LOR's for different programs... remember LOR's must be signed with a blue ink, have the official letterhead and you should include your AAMC ID No. which you will get once you get your ERAS. You should also send your medical school transcript which if is given to you in spanish should need to translate it to english. The MSPE (Medical School Performance Evaluation) before "Dean's Letter" (they changed the name), should be given to you by your school, follow guidelines given in ammc.org...you can skip it and don't send it but I would deffinitely recommend it because it boosts your application because your school would seen more trustworthy. and also you need to send a recent picture, wallet sized or american passport sized, color with light background, no more then 2x3 inches. You may download it insted in oasis support services.
Remember to send everything with the documment submission form that you can download from ecfmg.org. And attach it with a paper clip (do not staple)
Also remember that every documment that you send to ECFMG takes at least 4 to 5 weeks to be scanned and uploaded to ERAS sooooo..you should have sent it or send it by noooowwwww because...otherwise you will not be able to apply early...for instance I already sent my stuff to be able to apply on sept 1 in the programs that don't require my ECFMG certificate to apply...for the ones that require it I'm going to have to wait until I get it because anyways it would be wasting my money..... soooo my friend Doc clotaire you need to hurry up because this process is complicated and looong and full of all kinds of details that you will discover along the way and it also takes time....so I suggest to step it up. If you have any more questions please let me know.
Everything I have told you is in ECFMG.org in ERAS....and then DOCUMMENTS

About any other state...I have not seen any other state thas asks for a special letter like California but once I heard that NJ might although all the programs I have searched do not add this to their requirements so who knows but to my understanding only california gives us that kind of problem.

I live here in California and everything is more expensive than other places
more laws so on and so on.

I remmember when "Katrina" happened the governor of Luisiana waved the license (medical) for physians from out of state
i.e most of us IMG's and I know alot of people that whent and have a chance to practice in an emergency situation.......

In Oklahoma there is a big NEED for family physian's
they offer me last year but for family reasons I can't go

I have a freind that I told him to go to Alabama and at the begging he did not whant to because all the BAD history.
but I told him that is where one of the finest school's of medicine are
and to his surprise whe was received very nice and with the saliery that he makes
33'000 usd plus room and board well before you know it he has a nice girlfriend
and is doing well he wil finish next year and returns to Guanajuato Mexico.
he was wooried since he is BROWN like many mexicans
but he did very well for himself
Nopw I don't know if he will stay here in the US,but going back to Celaya Guanajauto with a graduate certificate from here well he will do great there

Such is life -Asi es la vida-

Karime Good luck with your SS!! Hope you get to study a lot! I did not have the are you the dr? line... jajaja that's because I did my SS in my on-campus clinic which was soooo convenient and since people knew that they would find young freshly graduated docs from the start they did not felt like that. In fact everybody was very nice and I was asked a lot of times for my private office jijiji and well obviously I don't have one right now... I'm leaving anyways hopefully soon...

Hello spitmetal is nice to see you hope everything is going well for you.

Right now I'm very happy because my university has agreed to give me my diplomma presto and they told me that in 2 months to the most I would have it in my little hands jajaja maybe less so... I'm very happy for that, it was such a battle of talking with everyone, doing all kinds of paperwork...but I got it!!!
I hope everybody is doing fine and I'll be seing you around...

HI I'M ENRIQUE FROM MEXICO,I'M ALREADY AN ORTHOPEDIST IN PRACTICE HERE IN MEXICO,BUT I WANT TO TAKE DE USMLE,DO I HAVE A CHANCE TO GET AN ORTHO RESIDENCY,DOES MY RESIDENCY IN ORTHOPEDICS IN MEXICO IS A PLUS IN MY APLICATION? SOMETHING ELSE I END MY RESIDENCY IN 2001 IS TO MUCH TIME ,I'M TO OLD TO APLICATE? I GRADUATE FROM MEDICAL SCHOOL IN 1995 AND ORTHO RESIDENCY IN 2001.PLEASE REPLY

  #3166

Hi Karime and GLOMD,
Happy that everything is going good. Floresmd, to be an already orthopedist is a plus but because it is highly competitive I think yo will need to master the exams and to do a fellowship (either clinical or research) and demonstrate how valuable are you in addition to obtain US LORs

  #3167

IF I DO A FELLOWSHIP IS MORE PROBABLY TO BE ACCEPTED IN AN ORTHO RESIDECY PROGRAM?

I HAVE A QUESTION,NOW I HAVE 35 YEARS OLD,I'M TOO OLD TO TAKE THE EXAMS AND BE ACCEPTED IN ANY RESIDENCY PROGRAMS? DO I HAVE MORE CHANCES IN OTHER SPECIALITIES LIKE IM,FP OR GENERAL SURGERY? I'M WORKING WITH PATIENTS SINCE I END MY SCHOOL,AS GENERAL PRACTITIONER AND NOW AS AN ORTHOPEDIST,DOES IT COUNTS,,I'M ALWAYS HAVE CONTACT WITH PATIENTS IN ALL THIS YEARS.

  #3168

Hi,
I think that you can improve your chances by having US experience because they are worry about your training, you have a chance to show yourself, you can obtain US LORs but, more important, you will know how the system works.
Age is not an issue, it could be if you have been outside practice for a long time but that is not your case. There are many residents in their 30s. If you have been practicing after finisihing med school cthat ould be useful of mean nothing, that depends of the program and what are they looking for, and against whom you are competing. You always will have more chances in other specialties than orthopedics. Of the ones you mention surgery, im, and fp from lower to higher chances.

  #3169

Hope never dies

  #3170

I agree with torontonian.. Although I need to tell you that ortho is one of the most difficult specialties to get into for an IMG. What you need are great scores and very very good LOR's from US orthos and if you can get someone to help you...maybe being and ortho you know someone who knows someone rolling eyes, I recommend to go and do some work with a reknown ortho or something...but remember you will not make a dime for this but you will get yourself noticed and you will deffinitely need at least 6 months of US clinical experience.
Age as torontonian told you is deffinitely not an issue, in fact I'm gonna be 25 during the match and I'm afraid program directors are going to think I'm in my diapers so don't worry about it, maturity and having a residency already like in your case is a plus and not a minus. Also what torontonian meant is that surgery is the most difficult to get in then comes IM and then FP (being the easiest one)...ortho is in a special category of the most difficult ones (even more then surgery) side by side with ophtalmo, derm, urology, radiology...so I'm not going to lie what you have ahead of you is a big challenge and getting to ortho being and IMG is quite difficult but not impossible so if you really want this your steps are: get great grades on your USMLE's and most important then this: to make friends with important orthos in the US.
GL and let us know your progress.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INFORMATION ,I APPRECIATE IT, ALL OF YOU ARE IN A RESIDENCY PROGRAM NOW? AND IN WHAT SPECIALITY ARE YOU?(TORONTIAN,SAYULITA AND GLO MD) I WILL BE IN CANTACT WITH YOU,FOR YOUR ADVICE,THANK YOU SO MUCH AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU.

  #3172

You're welcome Enrique, please do not hesitate to ask if you have more questions. I am not in specialty. I am a fellow and PhD student at UofT. Hopefully I will be applying into the US in 2009 but I have other options as well.

  #3173

DO YOU THINK THAT FIRST AID FOR USMLE,BRS PATH AND GOLJAN LECTURES ARE GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE IT IN THE EXAM?

  #3174

Hi Enrique, firs aid, brs path and goljan are good and necessary but not enough, you have to add kaplan lecture notes for step 1, you can by them on ebay, you can also add the kaplan dvds.

Good luck!
