Good luck with your search for a job DrGaxMac. Keep writing! Hector: Iīm in Mexico so I have no idea about english classes/schools in California or in USA. Other members of our mexican community are in US and in California, specifically. Iīm thinking seriously to go to take english classes meanwhile, at least for 1 or 2 months, mainly to improve my conversation-pronunciation-accent, but here in Guadalajara, I need it.

Hector, I don't know about places to take classes, but my advise is for you to stop speaking Spanish. Try to only talk English, in the stores or wherever you go. Instead of watching univision, watch the channels in English.

Hector: GOOD NEWS Iīm for you!. Now, you can begin to study for step 1 and some english classes. I decided to go to IMAC, i went in the morning, iīll start tomorrow morning my classes. Letīs see. But in fact, iīm more interested in their conversation club (thatīs my main problem), but iīll have to go to the classes, too, of course.

Hola a todos, Hector check the local colleges or universities. They offer classes within the school and also throught the community extension programs too. Where are you in California? The unit for a community college is 26 dollars. it si usually 3 units so that means you will pay 78 dollars for a semester. Some programs are free. Check the local newspaper sometimes you will see something there. But read and read listen in English not Spanish. Listen the sounds and practice them 20 minutes everyday at least. Buy a cople CD'S . at the local Barn's & Noble bookstore for only 30 dollars. Listen to them while you are awake or sleep but practice and repeat what you listen. I learned some Dutch likes this. Ik wil een biertje.(I want a beer)Not bad is it? hahahaha Hectro Hoe kan ik u helpen/ (how can I help you) Well I will be sincere I cannot write it well but I can kind of read and understand some communicate a little bit. I need to find someone to practice with. See Hector it si possible for you to learn English and quick. Chema go to Ingles in Quick learning is mostly conversational but cobran uno y la mitad de otro but is worth it I think. Lorena& Chema: Prepare to answer a lot and also about abortion. Remember it is not allowed in Mexico but it is in the U.S. Important subject specially when they are electing a new supreme court judge. But preapre to answer the questions that I posted before. Those can get you in or out. They are very important as well as researching the program. Lorena learn as much as possible frome where you are right now. Interna I hadn't heard that in a while. I work in a psyquiatric hospital right now and I now i will never be a psyquiatrist. Learn the meds as much as possible too. good luck. George nice to hear from you again. check the local hospitals and paper for anything related to the medical field. Tell them what exams you have taken and passed already. good to all and best to all!!!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share with everyone that I had my first interview last Friday and I think it went pretty well. My advice is the following: -As stated earlier on this forum by others, research a lot about the program you are going to visit, including the chairmanīs, program directorīs, and some attendingīs main interests. I even read an article written the by the chairman which allowed me to talk about it with her while interviewing; she seemed to really like that. -I used Isersonīs book and first aid for the match to, among other things, know what are the question typically asked and I worked on answering them. I did mock interviews to practice for the real thing. It helped me a lot. Posture, tone, hand shake, the way you walk, dressing are all very important. Itīs very different compared to the way itīs done in Mexico. -It is key to have good conversation skills because thatīs what interviews are really about: conversation. It is NOT an oral exam in which you follow necessarily a question-answer format. At least with the people I got to talk it was pretty laid back; they just want to know who you are and if you are truly interested in the field or not. -It was mentioned earlier that lots of abortion questions will be asked; I didnīt get any, although I did get another ethics question regarding DNR on one patient; I practiced over 50 different kinds of questions; therefore itīs impossible to know what you will get asked but thatīs why itīs important to practice including practicing how to improvise because thereīs always the chance youīll get asked something youīve never thought of before. Finally, chema regarding the telephone interview I have no idea; didnīt get any such offers and have never experienced that. However I think that doing mock interviews will get you ready for that too. Donīt worry about it, youīll do just fine. Anyway, hope this helps. Lorena, whenīs your first interview? Six to go, take care guys!

Hello everyone! My name is Gerardo, I am from Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico. I am very glad for coming across this website, now I know there are a lot of Mexicans doing the same thing as myself. I want to share my history with you, hoping somebody can give my some advice! I graduated from U de G in 1997, completed an Orthopaedic Surgery residency program in Leon, Gto in 2002; got the ECFMG certificate in July this year, got 206/84 in both step 1 and 2, I applied to orthopaedics, general surgery, and transitional year programs but I have not received any interview invitation yet. I would like to know why this has happened and if I still can expect any invitation. Another thing I would like to know is if anyone knows about the posibility of getting an orthopaedics fellowship position without having making any formal studies in the US, I have heard about somebody doing this and would like to know if anybody knows anything. Thank you very much for your advice and hope you all good luck!

hi Gerardo. Iīm from UdG, too, wanting to study gral surgery in USA. I can tell you about it, i havenīt had a good match till now , but people say that in surgery interviews are offered later than the others, even in late november, december. So, we still have some hope. Surgery and orthopedics are very competitive buddy, thatīs the reason because we havenīt had good luck in the match (i only have 1.5 interviews up to now). Besides that it seems to be that there has been a great and unexpected number of applicants this year, i donīt know the reason. i know you can do a fellowship in your area (orthopedics) but what i know is that itīs more difficult if you didnīt study your residency in USA, but itīs possible, of course, many people in Mexico (as you know) do it. They just end their residency in Mexico and do a fellow in the USA or other countries, thatīs usual.

I just came from Mexico City. What a great place to visit! So much history and culture. Interestingly, all historical sites are full of tourists from all over the world, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Israel, except for Americans. Thanks to everybody who suggested places to see in Mexico City.

Hi everybody! Hey guys thank you so much for your advice, now I have it decided, I'm going to register in the IWA and set my elegibility period within 6 months, but now I have another question for you, some people told me that in the moment that I send my papers after the IWA registration they have to be certificated (by a notary), annotated and then translated, but I don't know if that's true, since the ECFMG website only says that I have to send photocopies, it doesn't say anything about the photocopies being "certificated" or "annotated", it just says that the photocopies have to be translated and I don't know what to do, I'd love some advice from you guys, sinice I'm planning to go to the states in January, but I'd like to do all my paper work before I leave México. Hector, it's good to hear from you, I studied at UMSNH too, do I know you? maybe we are from the same classs (1998-2003), let me know. And about your doubt, don't worry UMSNH is listed in the IMED directory, I think we won't have problems, we just have to study real hard. I'm starting my process in the ECFMG certification too, so we have a lot in common. It's good to know that somebody else from Morelia is applying for it, good luck dude. Well guys, I'll appreciate your advice and we'll be in touch. Jaime.

Hey guys, I almost forgot about it, I have another question, it's about my name, as you know we have 2 last names, so I don't know how to fill the spaces in the forms, since they ask for "name, middle name and last name" and they are pretty insistent with all the name stuff, and they say that it has to be the same and in the same order in all the documents, so I don't know what to do about that. (By the way, my full name is Jaime Pedraza Prado) I know you can help me with that, thanks guys.
