thanks for the tips mty, i did n´t know that first aid has a qb. what about other books besides Kaplan?. ACLS and ATLS are stright forward certifications, do not worry, if you understand and apply the algoritms properly you should be ok.
I know it is TOO soon for this question but what is your experience with the visas? it is necessary a letter from the program (many programs said they do not support any visa) or you can apply for it only with the ECFMG certification?

  #2882

Hey guys!
I hope best wishes to the people whose are going to take their respectives exams.
Good Luck!
Thank you mty for your support.
I will gonna stay near lawrence and milwakee streets. Where are you gonna live?
Here is my msn account: karimecuevas@hotmail.com, and what about the cost and the editions? Thanks.
karimecuevas@hotmail.com-----for all of you folks, just add me, I'll be so gladed!
Probably I'll be in California too, but I'm not sure.
Keep in touch!

Hello!!! Please sad ! Does anybody have Kaplan notes og genetic, I need it, or do you think is enough to study only from The first aid?
I'll be glad If you help me please. Or genetics from where?

  #2885

Hello StemCell. I think you should get kaplan notes for genetics. I really like it. I got at least couple Qs in each block. I do not think that you should study just from FA.

I really do not know how you can get Kaplan notes (it is the same book for BCH). Probably if you have a friend in UAG studing for the boards. I am sure they have this book. Keep in touch.!!

GOOD LUCK FOR THE NEW RESIDENTS. smiling face

  #2886

torontonian: J1 visas are sponsored by ECFMG. H1s are sponsored by the hospitals/programs. if the hospital doesn't sponsor visas and you don't hold a green card or american citizenship, stay away from that program.

stemcell: keep in touch smiling face

Hi guys.....glad to say hi.....i just came back from cd juarez.....i finally got my visa (H1b!) and im going to NY next sunday....gettin ready to start...ill try to answer some of the questions and comment on some of the most recent posts...hopefully someone might even find some help....

karime:

SO, I'M HERE BECAUSE LIKE ALL OF YOU. I'M SEEKING FOR A BETTER <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />OPPORTUNITY IN THE MEDICAL AREA. I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE ENARMS EXAM YET, I DONT KNOW HOW HARD IT COULD BE, BUT, AS WE KNOW, TO BE IN A RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN MEXICO, YOU NEED: BE A GENIOUS, OR HAVING ENOUGH MONEY TO "PASS" THE EXAM. AND I KNOW THAT MATCHING IN A RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN THE USA IT'S EVEN MORE DIFFICULT, AM I RIGHT? TELL ME! In all honesty...I personally think usmle is easier that enarm. for one main reason...in the US, u go against the test...100% of takers could pass it, 100% could fail it...it's u against urself...in mexico u get into the test knowing that most people is gonna be cutoff even if they do a good job.....some grade is enough for 'legal medicine' and is crap fro surgery....in the usmle that doesnt happen....

OK, I WANT TO KNOW, IF I MUST WORRY ABOUT WHICH ONE OF ALL SPECIALITIES SHOULD I CHOOSE, BECAUSE I HAVE 3 OR 4 IN MIND, BUT I'VE NOT MADE A DECISION. YET.

just keep it <2
SECOND: IS IT ANY DISSADVANTAGE TAKING STEP 1 IN MEXICO? COMPARING WITH THOSE WHO TAKE IT IN USA? no disadvantage/advantage at all

FOURTH: ( SO MANY QUESTIONS!) DID ANYBODY TOOK THE ENARM BEFORE THE STEP 1? CAN YOU MAKE A COMPARISON BETWEEN : I took it befor step 1...yes, there is a world of difference....starting by the fact that the usmle is WELL WRITTEN...they ask you pieces of information that are related to something clinical...enarm just asks you pieces of information that are buried somewhere in Harrison's......dont even dare to think that studying for enarm is gonna help ur step1......the reverse may be true though.....

AND THE LAST ONE: WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE FOR ME: SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE USMLE STEP 1, AND 2 AND TAKE THEM TOGETHER IN A ONE YEAR PERIOD? ( I MEAN AFTER MY SOCIAL SERVICE YEAR) AND THUS TAKE THE ENARM? ON AUGUST 2008? OR FIRST PREPARE FOR STEP 1 AND TAKE IT IN A 6 MONTHS PERIOD?, OR FIRST APPLY FOR THE ENARM? before anyone tries to answer that question for you..u have to answer this question 'where do u wanna live?...what do you wanna do?...dont forget the money issue, most people dont like to touch this subject but no one would let me lie, get ready to burn some cash over this......

if ur answer is that u wanna go to the US my advice is this....forget about enarm...do a good job on the 'internado'....then during the social service u might try to take s1,ck and cs during that year.....is gonna take some commitment but it will put you in great advantage if your SS ends in july.....find a one month rotation for august....so u get a US LOR, apply early in sept, do interviews and step3 (if u want an H1 visa) during oct-dec....and thats it....very very very simplified but that would be my advise......

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Medusin

Guys a couple of friends from UAG told me that a new law was about to be approved that required only public medical schools to do a year of social service, but not private ones. I have not heard anything in the news about this..does anybody know whats up with this? I know nothing about this....if u ask me i think this is the way it should be....guys from private schools are really not that many and have received nothing from the goverment, they have nothing to 'pay back' for..

torontonian

Hi guys,
I am new in the forum; I just started this journey a month ago but I am wondering if you could give me some advices to maximize time and effort. for me 1st aid worked like a charm as an introduction to every step's material......also i used Usmleworld qbank and everytime i felt it saved my life......regarding books, well....i think any book with which u feel comfortable reading is the best....kaplan should do the job..

torontonian

know it is TOO soon for this question but what is your experience with the visas? it is necessary a letter from the program (many programs said they do not support any visa) or you can apply for it only with the ECFMG certification?.....chema is right....u get j1 thru ecfmg, they are ur sponsors..j1 is an exchange visa....H1b is a specialty occupation visa, it is sponsored by ur employee... each one has some advantages/disadvantages of its own...when a program says it does not support visas, it means it's a J1 only program...

hope to keep hearing from u guys.....good luck to everyone, have a safe move and keep posting

Chemamr and Yareli, I think you too match in IM and in the same program in Texas, right?, so cool to have someone you know, at list by this medium, to start residency not so lonely, in a new country, and away from family. Hope you too have a great internship. I would really like to know about your experiences and thoughts on the first days of residency, if and when you have the time please write a little bit about what you are going through, thanks and good luck.

Karime, good luck on starting your prep, I guess chemamr and noxar have answered all of your questions.

egomez, what are you doing right now, what's left for you, when are you doing step 3?

To all good night best of luck.

Thanks Noxar and everyone for your advices!!
Welcome Torontian to the forum. I'm new too.
And yes, I want to live in USA!!, but I don't discart the possibility to live in Canada!!
Thank you MTY, and I hope see you soon! One day......on july! Do you have a msn account? mine: karimecuevas@hotmail.com

You know?
I was seeking fon info about Canadian Health System, but I didn`t know that they have a horrible lack of family doctors, that's why I think It's a little bit easier getting your residency card, what you think? What do you know torontian about it? BUt for some reasons I thinks USA has best hospitals, even Canada is a Country with a First World Health System, anyway......
I have First Aid for USMLE 2005, but I don't know if edition year really matter, subjects like biochemestry, anatomy, can't change, I think.
Best wishes in your residency program!
GOod luck to everybody and keep a hard study!!!

i remember studying in 2005 with the 2002 1st aid....i dont necessarily think the edition matters...i think the 2005 should work fine......in the end 1st aid is just like introductory material for every exam...high yield pieces of info...u really get he info together in ur brain with the dvd's and doing questions...

yolanda im going to Long Island Jewish Med Ctr in NY....AP/CP program...i am actually leaving tomorrow morning......in about 10 hours...im nervous and excited to do this....hope to read u soon..keep posting

Spitmetal, Stem Cell did you get my PM´s? I ask because for the past couple of weeks I have had a few problems with them...sometimes I get repeated messages sent to me again, and others in the forum have gotten repeated PM´s from me...

Please let me know if something like this happened to anyone. Thanks!

egomez, hi, well I am studying immuno right now, hope to do step 1 by August, like Karla and Stemcell. Good luck on your step 3 prep.

Mty, good luck in this new stage in your life, may it be filled with blessings.

Karime, hi, a couple of years ago, I also thougth of Canada as a choice, but what I read and investigated back then made me think that Canada wasn't very IMG friendly, so I stopped thinking of Canada as a good choice and decided to concentrate in the US. I am not sure if things have changed. I know there was a program, can't remember where exactly in Canada, ottawa maybe?, I will look it up, well anyway, it was a program for IMGs but you had to practicaly re-do some medical school years something like that.

Chemamr and Yareli, are you in the same program?, I think so right, good luck on your orientation for your internship!

Everyone else good luck and happy studying
