1. no you dont need to know wich residency you want, so concentrate in the steps later you will have time to choose. ahh and remember in usa you could apply to all specialties if you want is not like here in mexico.

2.wherever you take it is the same thing.

3.contact ecfmg for that.

4.i dont know as i am a 4th year student.

Karime: Welcome to the forumsmiling face, very nice that you have plans to begin the USMLE journeynod, I agree with what the good siptmetal postedgrin, FOCUS ON THE STEPS FOR NOW..., but first check the issue about your school not being in the international directory, if neccesary as said before by spit, call ECFMG...

  #2855

Hi stemcell, I was reading one of your last posts, you say you want UM or FM, you mean Internal medicine and family medicine, right??

Hello everyone.

Hey Yolanda and Stemcell I think we are the only one taking the test on August. We Have to work hard and PASS!!!! Try to be in touch so we can support each other during this months. We have JUN-JULY FOR working hard. After this we can be calm. I made a calendar that probably could help you. I scheduled one week per subjet. With some exceptions: Anatomy,Patho and Physio for about 10 days. I will be taking a practice test in the begining of Aug. Then Qs,qs, QS and more Qs during the first 2 weeks of aug. Take another practice test in the 3rd week of August. If I get the score that would make me be safe I will be taking the test on August 31st.

I am studing from Kaplan lectures for most of the subjets. HY for neuroanatomy (I love this book) and BS. BRS for Physio, and Goljan book for patho. Also I am using FA as a guide for HY TOPICS. I am planing to sign up for UW in the begining of JULY.

Hey Yolanda and Stemcell keep in touch so we can support each other and bring some tips. Well, good luck and keep studing.

Also good luck to Chemma, noxar, drgaxmac for starting your residency. I am kind of with positive attitude knowing with you guys that this could be possible. Also congratulations for Lorena and Lalobum because they are going for the 2nd. year. (good inspirations guys!!!!). Ah , and Egomez too.

Thank you Karime for your optimistic toughts.

I'm going to answer in italic.

KARIME wrote:
HI EVERYBODY!
I'M NEW HERE, LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF:

NAME: KARIME, AGE: 23 (ALMOST 24!): GENDER: FEMALE PLEASE!
OCCUPATION: MEDICAL STUDENT (INTERNADO BY NOW, BUT I'LL BE IN SOCIAL SERVICE ON AUGUST 2007) I LIVE IN MORELOS, CUERNAVACA (1 HOUR TO D.F.)

FIRST THING FIRST, I'M SO GLAD TO FIND THIS FORUM, BECAUSE IT'S A DIFFICULT TASK TO GET THE RIGHT INFO ABOUT ALL THIS STUFF (ES UN RELAJO!), BUT ONCE YOU GOT IT, IT TURNS A LITTLE BIT EASIER.

KARLA, OK, DON“T WORRY, I KNEW A GUY WHO DID THE SAME EXAM 3 TIMES AND AT THE THIRD ONE, HE PASSED!, SO, KEEP DOING WELL WITH YOUR STUDYING AND YOU'LL BE VICTORIOUS! AND I HOPE THE NEXT TIME!

SO, I'M HERE BECAUSE LIKE ALL OF YOU. I'M SEEKING FOR A BETTER OPPORTUNITY IN THE MEDICAL AREA. I HAVE NOT TAKEN THE ENARMS EXAM YET, I DONT KNOW HOW HARD IT COULD BE, BUT, AS WE KNOW, TO BE IN A RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN MEXICO, YOU NEED: BE A GENIOUS, OR HAVING ENOUGH MONEY TO "PASS" THE EXAM. AND I KNOW THAT MATCHING IN A RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN THE USA IT'S EVEN MORE DIFFICULT, AM I RIGHT? TELL ME! ENARM is the national exam? I guess. yes, USMLE exams are much harder than the national exam (mexican). And in mexico you only need to pass the exam, here in the USA you may also need to do other stuff such as observerships, getting US LORs, etc, so that could make it harder as well.

OK, I WANT TO KNOW, IF I MUST WORRY ABOUT WHICH ONE OF ALL SPECIALITIES SHOULD I CHOOSE, BECAUSE I HAVE 3 OR 4 IN MIND, BUT I'VE NOT MADE A DECISION. YET.
SECOND: IS IT ANY DISSADVANTAGE TAKING STEP 1 IN MEXICO? COMPARING WITH THOSE WHO TAKE IT IN USA? not at all, you can apply to those 3 or 4 specialities all over the country, BUT you should try to focus in 1-2 (max 3 maybe) to maximize your chances. You can take step 1 anywhere, it doesn-t make any difference.

THIRD: HOW I CAN FIND MY FACULTY IN THE INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY? I'M FROM MORELOS, (FACULTAD DE MEDICINA DE LA UNIV. AUT. DEL EDO. DE MORELOS), BECAUSE I'VE TRIED AND TRIED, AND IT DOESN'T APPEAR IN THE ECFMG WEB SITE "IMED" I think noxar has helped you with this one.

FOURTH: ( SO MANY QUESTIONS!) DID ANYBODY TOOK THE ENARM BEFORE THE STEP 1? CAN YOU MAKE A COMPARISON BETWEEN THEM? again, if ENARM is the national exam which I think it is, yes, I took it before my step 1. Same thing, step 1 is harder than ENARM. Besides, the mexican exam is very clinical, just a low % of basic sciences.

AND THE LAST ONE: WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE FOR ME: SHOULD I PREPARE FOR THE USMLE STEP 1, AND 2 AND TAKE THEM TOGETHER IN A ONE YEAR PERIOD? ( I MEAN AFTER MY SOCIAL SERVICE YEAR) AND THUS TAKE THE ENARM? ON AUGUST 2008? OR FIRST PREPARE FOR STEP 1 AND TAKE IT IN A 6 MONTHS PERIOD?, OR FIRST APPLY FOR THE ENARM? what do you want? study in mexico or USA? or any of them? if you want to go to the USA, I'd suggest you to study and take step 1 and 2 in around 1 year period as you say. Of course, first study and take step 1, and afterwards, continue with 2ck. If possible, you can start preparing during your social service and save some time (not after all that year).

I KNOW IT DEPENDS IF I WANNA STAY HERE IN MEXICO OR IN THE USA, BUT I REALLY WANT THE BEST OPPORTUNITY PRACTICING MEDICINE, AND I WANT STABILITY, AND A REAL JOB, YOU KOWN, EVERY THING THAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR, ' COS I THINK, MEND ME IF NOT, USA HAS BETTER JOBS OPPORTUNITIES FOR US AS MD!
WELL, THAT'S ALL GUYS, I HOPE YOU'RE NOT SO TIRED AFTER READING ALL THIS.
THANKS AGAIN!
KEPP IN TOUCH!

hope this helps in some way.

Wlecome Karime to the forum!!!

Guys a couple of friends from UAG told me that a new law was about to be approved that required only public medical schools to do a year of social service, but not private ones. I have not heard anything in the news about this..does anybody know whats up with this?

Hi everybody!
Thanks for your welcome and advices!!!!
Spitmetal, Drgax, Egomez, medusin.
Noxar! Now I'm more optimistic with the list!!! My school is in there!
And Chemamr, as forum hero, you do it very well, Thanks!!!

Ok, now I'm trying to be calm, relaxed, not at all, but yes......And I'd been seeking for information about the Kaplan Material for Step I. The next month I hope I'll be in Illinois, Does anybody live in there? Near there? Because I want to start my study plan, and take the exam on Agust 2008, but with the correct and appropiate material, I've heard that you can get it at low prices, and all you need, and some friends told me that in this forum probably, so I hope someone of you could sell me copies or even used books and DVDs, Qbooks, Qbanks, you now.....
I found a web site and they offer me the Kaplan material of basic sciences but in PDF Format, also includes DVD classes (24 of'em) and USMLE first Aid 2006, I'm trying to figured out if I could get a better material being in USA ( I supposse yes!!), but Im looking for your warning about this material.......So Pleaseeee, Check it! :

http://www.dereto.com.mx/accdb/viewItem.asp?IDI=1...

Thanks again, and 1 Question to Dr. Chemamr:
Did you passed the "ENARM" (Examen Nacional de Residencias Medicas)?
If yes: Why (obvious question I think) are you now trying a REsidency program in USA, and If not, do you think that I'm wrong with my thoughts, about that corruption involves the medicine-world in Mexico, and besides I think you have better progression and success oportunities, both, professionally and financial in this country......What do U think?
See you soon!

i think is legit...however....i would advise against buyin a lot of material as pdf's, since just printing the damn things is gonna cost u a fortune if not just hours and hours......and i dunno about u but I sure get easily tired reading on the computer screen.....i would try just to get the dvd's and the rest (qbook, 1st aid, notes, other books) in hard paper....then buy UW and do that online....

yes, I did it and passed it. I quit for the same reason you're describing. Better professional chances (mainly and primarily) and secondarily better financial chances. But Mexico is also a good option, for example if you get into one of the top hospitals such as INNSZ in mexico city (for example) you'll have great teaching and academy and become a great specialist. But obviously I prefer and preferred the USA pathway. At the end, it's also important how comfortable you'll feel living whether in the USA for the rest of your life or in Mexico.

A new life lies ahead, an intern year is a hard road, but it only lasts a year. Try to give the max, never look back and always work to be #1. The year goes by really fast, only follow the 3 basic rules of the intern...

1.- Eat when you can. 2.- Sleep when you can 3.- Try to do your work ahead of time.

Remember all the hard work you have done and the goals you have acomplish.... the rest is easy.

Best of luck.

Your friend

Hi guys,
I am new in the forum; I just started this journey a month ago but I am wondering if you could give me some advices to maximize time and effort. My situation is as follow: I am working in my PhD during the day so I only have time to study for the step 1 in the afternoons. I am using the Kaplan material but I am wondering if there are other books and question banks REALLY useful.
I am mexican graduated from the Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas but living in Toronto so if there is some other mexican in the GTO who would like to create a studying group please let me know.
