Dear Spit!

Of course people will try to discourage you in your plans, due to tha fact their mind is so small that they could not see beyond Mexico and try to pull you away from your dreams. Dont listen to people that have no dreams and have no experience outside Mexico medicine style.

The truth is, does not matter were you are, is how you prepared that counts, you can be in the best hospital arround the best doctors and learn nothing, and be a mediocre resident, but you can be in a very limited program and expand you knowledge to the limits. In my experience, the US training is above the Mexican style. I am not saying that mexico's training is better or worse, there are great hospital in Mexico were great residents are trained, what I am saying the style is better. What I have experienced here is that medicine here is taught without any limitations, restrictions or convictions. Evidence base medicine and treatment guidelines are follow and not what "En mi experiencia" doctors in Mexico argue. Here you can discuss your treatments, diagnosis with no fear about repriments or just doing it because the attending said so. You are treated with respect and with there is a great cordiality and respect betwen the health care team. Also you have very limited margin of error due to the malpractice lawsuits, so the expectations of your performance is greater, this is reflected because everybody evaluates you (nurses, students even patients). Nurses here are more proactive, they do more stuff and they really help you out. You have respiratory therapist, oral therapist, and pharmacist that will check your prescriptions for errors. You really have a huge team that you help you, that if you use in the right way, can really boost your residency training to the max.

About the excess of studies (lab and xrays), I will agree that sometimes unnecesaty studies are done, but is not becuase you are not clinical oriented, but is because you need to protect yourself, your attending and the hospital (Patient with head trauma, even if it does not have any symptoms, you order a CT scan, you never know if the patient has a subdural bleed and will return later with a lot of symptoms and lawyers). In Mexico you need to be more clinical due to lack of resources, but sometimes this limitations will not let you to the absolute diagnosis. The exposure to pathologies is greater in the US than in Mexico, simply because there are more races and cultures with diferent genetic backrounds, many pathologies that you will rarely see in Mexico are more common here (in my case the MoyaMoya syndrome, jajaja really agve a hard time to diagnose).

As you can see, there are two diferent types of medicines, two different styles, is hard to tell wich is better or worse, the only thing I can tell you is that I am taking the most I can take from the US Medicine training, and I like it.

Never stop dreaming, pursue your goal until the end.

Lalo

Hi every body, Have a good day, Does anybody know how much Qbank help you and why? and also if there are questions in the qbank that also are in the exam.
Spitmetal, how long did you study for the exam?

  #2732

StemCell,

Generally speaking, doing practice questions and exams is definitely helpful for many reasons: it directs your emphasis towards certain topics, identifies your strengths and weaknesses, and gets you in the right frame-of-mind for taking this exam. Many people have found it helpful to do 25-50 questions each night to review the subjects they studied earlier in the day. As the test day approaches, it is probably a good idea to take some longer test blocks back to back to build up your mental stamina for test day.

Kaplan’s Q-Bank has rapidly become a favorite. It is favored for providing a good simulation of a computer based test and for having a comprehensive database of questions. Many people have reported that the difficulty of Q-Bank questions actually supercedes that of actual Step 1 questions. With the proper preparation, you’ll find your Q-Bank scores and confidence peaking as you near test day. In my case, I found many questions that I had in Qbank very similar to the ones in my test.

Regardless of how you approach it, practice questions of the proper caliber will be a big help in your review, especially in regard to timing and mental endurance.

Thanhs Yareli, I asked, because I got the qbank for three months but some quesions are so dificult.
And Congratulations for your position in the match, I Know you will do it well!!!
And don´t forget to continue writting here, it is so much help for us.!!

  #2734

I know what you mean about the questions, I felt the same many times... but I think as long as you learn from the mistakes you are making and keep moving you will do more than fine.

Thanks! I was not expecting to start this year, but I am SO happy I got this opportunity smiling face Time goes by so fast, so believe me... in less time that you are expecting we'll be wishing the best in your residency.

Anatomy: Rapid review + 2004 kaplan lecture notes
The Rapid review book includes anatomy and embriology
the kaplan lecture notes includes Histology, anatomy, embriology and neuroanatomy.

I LIKED BOTH OF THEM, but if you dont have time i would say that the kaplan lecture notes have more test like material.

For all who are going to apply for the match 2008, ECFMG sent me a mesege
An E-Newsletter for International Medical Graduates Pursuing Graduate
Medical Education in the United States

Issue 114 - April 30, 2007

**********************************************

IN THIS ISSUE:

- IMGS PARTICIPATING IN 2008 MATCH SHOULD REGISTER FOR STEP 2 CS NOW

**********************************************

IMGS PARTICIPATING IN 2008 MATCH SHOULD REGISTER FOR STEP 2 CS NOW

International medical students/graduates, including
participants/graduates of Fifth Pathway programs, who need to pass Step
2 Clinical Skills (CS) to participate in the 2008 Match (in March 2008)
are strongly encouraged to register now for Step 2 CS. At the time of
this writing, the earliest available test date at any test center was in
August 2007. As indicated in the 2007 Step 2 Clinical Skills Schedule
for Reporting Results, if you do not take Step 2 CS by December 31,
2007, your result will not be available in time to participate in the
2008 Match.

We are aware that both international medical students/graduates and
students/graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada
must take Step 2 CS to satisfy specific requirements and deadlines, and
the Step 2 CS scheduling system is designed to handle a high volume of
examinees. However, demand for the Step 2 CS examination will be
especially heavy during the second half of 2007. Additionally, test
sessions at all test centers may be subject to scheduling restrictions
that limit the number of test dates available to you. To maximize your
chances of obtaining a 2007 test date,

- Apply for Step 2 CS now, provided you meet the eligibility
requirements.

- Once registered, schedule your testing appointment as soon as
possible.

- If you cannot obtain a testing appointment at your preferred test
center, check for availability at other test centers.

Registering and scheduling now offers a number of benefits:

- Registered applicants can schedule immediately if a preferred testing
appointment is available.

- Applicants registered for Step 2 CS can use the E-mail Notification
feature of on-line Step 2 CS Calendar and Scheduling. Currently offered
on a pilot basis, the E-mail Notification feature allows registered
applicants to indicate their preferred test dates/centers and receive
e-mail notification when testing appointments that match their
preferences become available.

- Applicants who schedule a testing appointment can change the testing
appointment without cost, provided they give more than 14 days' notice.
See Rescheduling in the ECFMG(r) Information Booklet.

- Applicants who take Step 2 CS early in the year and receive a failing
result might have the opportunity to retake the exam in 2007 and receive
their result in time to participate in the 2008 Match.

Updated information on Step 2 CS scheduling will be posted to the ECFMG
website as it becomes available. Individuals planning to take Step 2 CS
should monitor the ECFMG and USMLE(tm) websites for the latest
information.
