Hello guys, I have a question. Lets say I want to go into cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery or neurosurgery...if I get a categorical position in general surgery, can I change later on?

Do I have to finish general surgery and then start the other residency or do I have to choose a general surgery program that is already "encaminado" to cardio, vascular, neuro, etc?

for cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery you need to finish 5 years of general surgery and then you should match in a cardiothoracic or vascular FELLOWSHIP.

for neurological surgery u shouldnt get into general surgery

How important do you think it is doing basic or clinical research in the United States to getting a good residency position?

Hello Again doctors ! grin

Thanks for the adviced chemar, I decied that I will take the S1 CK on august and CS plus S2 after a couple of months (the S2 If I pass the S1 with God's Will, of course LOL)

I'm still not very sure when do I need to take the exams to have a succesful match next year, but one thing It's for sure... I'm taking S1 CS and CK this year AT LEAST !!!! and hopefuly I'll have the chance to enter on the 2008 family practice match .

Right now I'm studing with a study partner ( that I meet in this forum by the way) 5-8 hrs three times per week personaly ( the rest of the week we're studing by our own, and that's when I do my questions) We're reviewing some lecture videos, FA, PP clues and a few extra review books of basic subjects.

And... I'm seriously considering of taking Kaplan classes right before the exam to be even more prepared and get a good score to open more doors to better interviews and oportunities. What do u think about this?

I'm gonna try to prepare myselft the best I can and I trust that I can do it.

If I sitck to a schedule, I'll do fine; I think. Wish me luck !

By the way, Does somebody know of the Kaplan live lecture classes for S1 in a chicago location???? Thanks for all your support !

Susie nod

susie
I took the kaplan live lectures in Pasadena, and I can tell you that if you have the dvds you don't need to take the live lectures. Both are exactly the same.
You are going to go to Chicago, pay a lot of money to hear the same guy with the same jokes and every thing.
The lecture videos, kaplan lecture notes, first aid, qbank should be enough, I think.

FA and UW are a MUST!!!!!!
and i think (well thats my opinion) that any book u choose for every subject will be fine, i.e. kaplan lecture notes, rapid review, BRS, etc etc

Hypothetical question:

If you were offered a research position at a top medical school in the US...would you take it? Even if it meant putting your medical studies in your home country on hold for about a year?
