thank you ARJ and Nisha. I was checking that 510=220 in the NBME corelation. But i would say that is +- 15 like a SD. So you can get a really good score. Good Luck !!!

Hi everybody!

Hey drgaxmac congrats for your score, and I'm glad that everything now is paied off, and just keep going dude.

Chemamr that's a great score in your 2CK, congrats man, you are doing it great!

Hey guys I have a few questions for you, as you might notice I'm new in all this process, and right now I'm about to register in the IWA, but I'm not sure if it would be good for me to wait until I feel more prepared for the Step 1 or just do it right now, now I'm in México (Morelia), but I'm going to the states next year (maybe february) for a long time, so I don't know what should I do. I don't know either how long is the registration process, and if I should have all my documents and translations ready by the time I'm doing my registration, please guys help me with that.

Well nice to hear from you guys, and we'll be in touch.

  #238

Hi Jaime.

I personally think you should wait for your registration, i think you should study a bit, see the material, and then apply, because once you apply you must choose a testing elegibility period. This means you must know the date you are taking the test. So my advice is first start to study and then decide when you want to take it.

But i do encourage you to have all you papers translated when you come to US, this will save you a lot of time.

If any body has any other suggestions they are more than welcome. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers!!!

Jaime. What I think you could do, Its to apply, but set your elegibility period for starting 6-7 months from now, because (at least with me) the registration process, (all the sending and proving information with the university) took like a month or two.

  #240

Hey Chema, congratulations on your score, thatīs an awesome score and I think you should feel very proud of yourself! And congratulations on your first interview too! Iīm sure more will arrive soon after.

Lorena, I agree, letīs share some interview tips; I havenīt been to any yet, but my first one will be next Friday. Iīll let you know how it goes. Then I have 4 in December and 2 in January. Hopefully I well get a couple of extra ones. I am kind of nervous too but Iīm sure we will all be alright. Itīs like right before the CS exam begins, you feel nervous, but after the first patient, then itīs much easier because all the nervousness goes away.

Hey Jaime, I agree with drgaxmac. Since you are just getting started on all of this, I think itīs a better idea for you to first get a feel for things; figure out your study method and your rythm. Afterwards, it will be easier for you to know and decide when you will be ready. Besides, Iīve seen it happen with some friends, in that they schedule their tests and then something comes up and for whatever reason they canīt take the test on the original date and it gets sometimes complicated to find a new date or you have to pay a fine, etc. In summary, study for a while and then youīll be able to make the best decision! Good luck and keep asking!

Take care everyone!

thanks guys for your support grin !

I would like to do 1 question to you guys, i know this is completely personal and my decision but i feel confused confused and a bit lost with this decision. So Please, I need your help and your honest opinion, ok?.

Iīm applying to general surgery only. No too much luck in the current match till now (althought they say that in surgery they give many interviews in midnovember, so, there is still hope). My question is whether apply or not to IM too. Thatīs my 2nd option. Honestly i like surgery, it makes me feel much better, but there have been some people who have suggested me (which sounds logical) that i should apply to IM that is easier and to enter to 1 program of IM (if i donīt get anything in surgery) this year to fill that "gap" and be studying something and be part of the "system". I mean, I donīt dislike IM, it would be ok to be rheumatologist or neurologist, but i like more surgery. But i donīt know if itīs a good idea to apply because maybe i would quit at the beginning of the 2nd year to study a surgery program and then my records would be in this way: 1 year of surgery residency in Mexico, 1 year of IM in USA, and PDs would say: "now he wants to study surgery again, he must be crazy or maybe he will quit again with us after 1 year. "

Do you know what i mean?, what should i do?. Any advice is welcome, really. confused

Hi everybody!

Thank you so much for your advice guys. But now I have another question for you: Do I have to select my elegibility period at the same time that I register with IWA and send my 186 form to ECFMG? Or can I wait to select my elegibility period some time after I've already registered? That's something that I don't understand at this point.

Chema, my personal point of view it's that you should apply for IM too, since is easier. I'd do that, but as you say it's a personal decision, and I think you should listen to a lot of people and ask'em about it, I just hope you decide the best thing for you. Congrats again for your score.

Well guys, thanks again and we'll be in touch.

  #244

Chemamr, I would sugest you to apply to IM as well, theres a lot of people who do that and theres nothing wrong with it, dont PD's want previous experience??, What better than that!!, But think about it, Think if you would enjoy the year youll spend in IM. I hope this helps. (and I send you another smak for not being happy with your results)grin

Jaime, Im not sure, but I think that you have to select your elegibility period at the time you apply by IWA. But you can selected to star in 6 months, and from that, youll have 3 more months to take the test. At least start recolecting all your papers and translating them.

  #245

Jaime: I do believe, just like Mxshrink, that when signing up in IWA and sending the form you have to select an elegibility period; again, I would suggest waiting a little bit until you get a better feel for things.

Chema: I donīt think applying into IM would be such a good idea for more than one reason: 1) Most IM programs (both preliminary and categorical) send out invitations early (October, November); I know a little bit about IM because, although Iīm headed into PM&R I also have to match into a preliminary year of IM. Therefore, if you apply right now to IM, I think that for the most part, programs have already sent out their invitations; thereīs no way of knowing, of course, if this is true for absolutely all programs. But at least some of the people I know (several american med students currently applying as well) have told me so. 2) Imagine you match into IM; if your true dream is to be a surgeon, why head in a different direction? In my experience, what has helped me the most in this entire USMLE/Match process (which I began over 2 years ago) has been to decide/select an objective/goal, focus on it, and not let anything or anyone change my mind. If what you want to be is a surgeon then aim at being a surgeon, the best one. 3) Imagine you match into IM; in less than a year you are going to be applying/interviewing for a surgery position. If everything turnes out ok, you would be getting several interviews: do you think your IM program director is going to let you miss/not attend your IM responsibilities at your hospital? How are you going to explain that? 4) I know of other mexican graduates who are currently surgery residents in the states; if they can do it, so can you! 5) I donīt know about your step 1 score but your step 2 score is great; I think that makes you eligible to several surgery programs; if not this year, next year for sure. 6) In case you didnīt match this year, what I would do instead of IM, is to try to do/get as many surgical rotations in the United States; I have gotten invitations from all programs I did rotations at; really, getting programs, and especially program directors, to get to know you is priceless. Instead of being just another piece of paper in a stack of applications on a program directorīs desk, you immediately transform into "the guy that rotated with us 4 months ago" or something like that. I even had an attending call a program director from another program to put in a good word for me. 7) You have always stated that if you donīt match this year, youīll always have next year; give yourself a year focusing on surgery; if things donīt work out, then think about something else. But donīt change objectives before the race is over. Iīd rather be what I really want to be even if that means being a year older instead of "saving" a year of my life but leading an unhappy one.

Hope this helps; itīs just an opinion and only you can make such a decision, take care!

thank you guys ! I think iīll take this sunday to think about it and try to take a decision.

hi chema,

Today is the day you are taking off to make a decision and i just wanted to contribute and give you my opinion on what i would do in my case, because for some time i had a similar idea in my mind.

I agree with PM&R, if you dont match this year, you can do so many things to make yourself a great candidate for next match, being still focused on surgery.

For some time i thought in applying to psychiatry, because i thought the same thing than you ... if i dont match in IM, i may match in psychiatry and i will have a year of experience and then i can apply to IM again...but IM is what i want to do, i like psychiatry but it is not exactly what i want to do forever so i didnt. If i dont match in IM or FM i will work hard and do a lot of things to be very competitive and i will apply again next year.

I have noticed your great enthusiasm and i am sure that if you dont match this year you will next one for sure!! besides you already got an interview and being positive -you only need one to match!

best of luck,

your friend

  #248

thanks so much my dear friend Lorena smiling face for your comment.

I have taken my decision, and you have re-confirmed it. I wonīt apply to IM, itīs the best thing i can do for a couple of reasons. And Iīll do my best in the few or many interviews i get this match.

Thank you very much guys, really. nod
