The band 3 protein is an anion transporter that allows bicarbonate (HCO-3) to cross the membrane in exchange for Cl-. This increases the amount of CO2 the blood can deliver to the lungs. If it is absent, less bicarbonate will be transported out of RBCs, PH decreases.
