probably because it would result in built of Inosine monophosphate which offcourse is not being salvaged and you give allopurinol and it would not even be degraded.

ya, you are right. There is another story to it. Allopurinol is an analog of purine, it requires the enzyme PR Transferase, so that it can form (Phospate+Ribose+ allopurinol )and that way it can inhibit the denovo synthesis of the purines. Of course it also acts at xanthine oxidase. What do you think?
