When a coordinator receives anywhere from 20-50 emails a day, it's impossible to answer all the questions. I have a generic email that I return to applicants that tries to answer all the questions that commonly are brought up. There is an outside chance that a program director (especially in some of the smaller community hospitals) will receive your email, so make certain that your spelling and grammar are correct.

And please, don't get mad and email the coordinator again when we don't personally answer all of your questions. (It's happened, an applicant sends an angry sounding email or even telephones me with an attitude because I didn't answer one question).

Thanks - bbb

Hi bbb,
In your opinion, which is the best approach, the one you agree with and the one that makes you annswer. How should we , the applicants put it (the questions that we have regarding the program) in order to get the answers?
Thanks,
Andrea

Thanks for waiting patiently for me to return.

The best way? Simply.

"Dear Program Director:

I am an international medical school graduate from Slovakia. What are the application requirements to your program?

Thank you

BBB"

You will receive an email with the requirements or you will receive a link to the hospital web page with appropriate information.

Good luck

When you are emailing a program to respond to an interview call or ask about your application status, please, please, please, make certain that your name, email and ERAS number are in the body of the email - not just in the "sender" area. I can't begin to count how many responses I have received that I can't recognize the sender!! (Very difficult to schedule an interview, when I don't know the applicants name! )

And please don't ask a program coordinator to give you the results to an exam (Steps or CSA, etc) that you have taken - we all hope and pray for good answers, but it's not my place to inform you that you passed or failed an exam! They will never pay me enough to do that!

(And don't ask your good friend to come and ask the coordinator your score - it's a violation of your privacy to give this information to another person)

Good luck and good interviews to everyone!! grin

(caffeine, I need more caffeine!!) bbb

BBB,
How latest one may apply in a residency program and still be considered equally?
I am planning to apply in Mid November (due to my pending exam) but I have heard that residency programs usually do not take any interest in late applications. Is it true?
Thanks for your help

  #8

That's pretty late!! By mid-November, most of my interview positions will be filled and even had a number of names on a wait list. It's not that we aren't interested, but that we don't have room.

Good luck

d be nice if you cud provide o

Definition of cud (from Websters):

1. Food regurgitated from the first stomach to the mouth of a ruminant and chewed again.
2. Something held in the mouth and chewed, such as a quid of tobacco.

When replying to a program, please don't use common email abbreviations. It doesn't look professional.

Hi Ms.BBB,

I have applied for around 65 programs in IM. I have not received any interviews yet. I want to write to programs expressing interest in their program and then asking the status of my application.
Can you please tell me what points i need to emphasize about the program. I do visit the website. But i am asking is can u give me few key topics which i can search and write to them.
I really appreciate your help

  #11

i have the same question as drsury

Also, i want to know, is it better to send an email expressing interest in their program and then asking the status of my application or calling them by telephone?

thanks

  #12

I'm not bbb and I'm sure she has more information. I can tell you, however, that some programs do not review applications if the graduation year is more than 5 yrs. ago. I also spoke with a coordinator and was told their program has a 2yr. graduation limit. That having been said, I do have a friend in residency (2nd yr IM) who is an IMG and graduated 10yrs ago. She was working as a dermatologist in our country.

My PD prefers applicants 3-4 from medical school. Occasionally he'll look at something older. I think that the oldest grad that we are interviwing this year graduated in 1997.

But, different programs have different rules.

Hi bbb,
I really need your help....I am a FMG. I didnt apply for this year's match bc I didnt have my CS and CK results till last week. Now I have passed all my exams and I have received my ECFMG certificate.... Right now Im lost...I dont want to lose this year and am not sure how to go about for the post-match....! What should I do??? I would be grateful if you can guide me....Thank you so much

  #15

Hi BBB,
I really appreciate the great help you are doing to the IMG community.

I have a similar question too. I'm still awaiting my step 2 cs results and am expecting to them in March (hopefully by prematch).
I need to know what you look for when choosing a resident through post match. Maybe I need to make myself more clear. I have 95 and 93 on step 1 and step 2 respectively. I''m doing a Masters in Public Health in the US. It has been 5 years since I've been out of med school. What would the program director look for, when making a decision to take someone like me for postmatch? Do I stand a good chance?
Thanks again
Sri

One of the best things to do to get information is to write to a program and ask what their application requirements are. However, it's best not to post a list of questions to a program because it's really difficult to answer all of them. Just ask what the general application requirements are for their program. The only reason that I am bringing this up is the number of emails that I received today....I received more than this (by far) and I send out a generic response that should cover the majority of this information. Thanks!
**Sorry if you recognize one of these lists as your email. I did remove all "personal" information so that only I know who you are. The up side is with the number of emails that programs receive, I am not going to remember who you are....... Good luck everyonewink

thanks BBB, its so considerate of u. yes, we see common sense and humour in u.......and u r God's sent.

Thanks BBB for your input. I have an observation cum query. I noticed that programs when downloading the application do not download Deans Letter/MSPE. This is so, even if the Deans Letter/MSPE is available for downloading. Later on (about a month into application) they download the Deans Letter/MSPE.
Is there a significance to this. I mean, does this show that a specific program is interested in your credentials or it is merely a routine way of doing this.

Regards

  #22

Deans letters were only able to be downloaded yesterday - ERAS releases them on November 1.
