HI friends, biochemistry is very hard for me, could you tell me plz how to memorize and which book i shud follow? i am studing kaplan lecture notes and f.aid.

thanx

Hi Reet, thanks for the encouragement. I've been stuck in Pharm. for 20 days and found that my reading speed is getting slower and slower. I thus started my 1st round reading of Goljan. Rapid review is a great book. Basically, I can have 1 chapter of it done along with 2-3 chapters of LANGE everyday. If everything goes on well, both of them will be finished before Oct. 10th.

Hello Tanushree, I used Kaplan notes for Biochemistry. It is already very concentrated. It's very hard for the 1st time reader. Trust me, those stuffs can stay in your brain for a long time and make the 2nd round much easier.

I had my exam date scheduled today. It's the VERY LAST AVAILABLE day of this year. haha grin Start to count days from now on. Dear diary, I've given up Thanks Giving and Christamas. New Year eve is the last thing I can expect. Please make my dream come true.......

I used Kaplan notes for the molecular bio part. For Qbank, I probably will start it late next month.

  #30

Rapid review is a very concentrated book. Yeah, that's why we call it 'review book' as all the other books. Life is a little bit easier when I mix Path and Pharm together--1 to 2 chapters of Goljan and 2 chapters of Lange everyday. I'd better to have these two done before Oct. 10th then start my 3rd round reading+Qbank. Always heard people say that they can have over 100 pages of reading plus 200Qs done in a single day. It's not sth I even aspire to right now. I still have dreams though--maybe it will be possible in the 3 round reading, haha...

  #31

After reading several chapters of Rapid review, I tried some 'webpath' questions. These are the 'direct' type questions to help us understand and remember the important points in each major chapter. Seems that rapid review points right to the 'HY'. Got 80% Qs corrected after my first time reading. Unfortunately, These Qs have no direct correlation with the real Step1. Let's see what will happen in Qbank after my 2nd round reading.

  #32

80% on first read is very good indication, as far as major topoics concerned//you doing pretty goood.

keep going...................................................................... .......................

Thanks Reet. I think the webpath Qs are there to help us LEARN the subject. Kind of different from the real exam style. BUT, yes, I am happy to see that 80% of the knowledge was there for me and it's so nice to hear people say "you doing pretty goood" grin

So, there are only 5 days left before my oct.10 deadline. I still have totally 10 chapters of Goljan to go over. I am trying to have 2 chapters+ simulated webpath Qs done everyday. Have no time to for his lectures so far. oh well, leave them to the 2nd/3rd round reading.

  #34

Just learned that another of my USMLE friends passed step1. After all of her hard working, she deserves it. Hi Hua, I am very happy for you and wish you GL for step2.

  #35

step 1

its good if u doing both pharma+patho together cuz 3P'S ARE THE MAIN BULK of understanding concepts. i will also try webpath now as u saying it helps to learn the subject.BUT i am doing histo ,,embryo these days.next is biochem ,,also hoping to do ques bank in next month

keep going.

HI, Step 1 thanks a lot , wish you good luck for your exam

Well, I didn't make it by yesterday and it won't be done by today either. I still have 4 chapters of Goljan Pathology to go. I spent the weekend looking for step2 books and travelled to another city twice to take look at them. Oh lord, if it wasn't the bad guy, who sold me fake stuffs, I might have used paypal and waited for books to be mailed with a peaceful mind as before. Anyway, after that bad experiences, I always check the books before I pay. Ok, enough complains--not every seller is bad. In fact many of them are very nice people--like the guy who just sold his books to me.

Here is something for everyone: It seems to me that many people attended Kaplan programs in the summer are selling their books recently. Since it's always the 'seller-market' for these original books, you may want to buy one at this not-that-hot season. For myself, I bought a nice set of step2 books at very reasonable price. wink

did u finish ur second read ????????shocked

GOOOD JOB

Thanks Reet. Yes, I am about to end the 2nd round reading, except Behavioral Science, which haven't been touched at all. I will leave it to the the very end and read it just once. I will start Qbank during my 3rd round reading. Hopefully, this round could be finished by early Dec.

Start from Pathology....

  #40

1st day of my 3rd round reading.

Before it really started, I planned to have 2 groups (100) Qs + 60pages of Goljan Pathology everyday. Well, the Qs took much longer time than I thought. For today, it's 5.5 hours!!! I need another 6 hours to finish the book reading part. PLUS, there is still 1 hour of Goljan lecture on the list. I never liked long-time study--yeah, who will anyway. The only thing I can try is to work more efficiently. Well, let's see.

2 comments to make:

CNS is my weakest point in both Path and Parm.

Qbank heavily tests CNS.

Hated.... I'd better crash it before it runs over me.

The 3rd round of reading is not going fast enough. Turned out, if I tried to finish 100 Qs, I only have time for 30pages of reading. Between book reading and Qs, I prefer to go over the book first over doing more Qs. Hopefully, I am doing the right thing. BTW,

Goljan lectures are great! ---Yeah, you just repeated what everyone is saying.

Ok, here is something new from me: the lecture disagreed with his 'rapid review' book at some points. Please read my post on the Pathology board for the details. --- Really? Let me take a look.

  #44

Hey step12005...Goljan lectures indeed are awesome!!!...read your post in the pathology forum...havent gone through his rapid review book...so can't really say...still have quite a few lectures to go through myself!...if i think of soemthing i shall get back to you...

Tell me about doing questions AND reading!!....it does take a really long time...so it is wise to strike a balance of some sort....and you seem to be doing just that!good luck!

  #45

What I did in the past 14 days: Went through Rapid review and FA path. again, listened to 1/4 of Goljan lectures, did 650Qs. There are still tons of Path Qs left (over 2000) but I decided to go on with Biochemistry and try to practice 50 path Qs perday along with the reading. Oh, yes, and the Goljan lecture.

Somehow, I don't see the end of my preparation in 2005. Will decide to postpone or not after I try the NBME practice exam.

  #46

I am finishing up Biochemistry by this weekend. I went through the major part of Kaplan notes, Biochemistry, FA, Qbook and related parts in Qbank. The overall correction rate is about 70%. There are always points I missed or ignored during the reading. It's sure a test of our memorization.

  #47

Had Biochemistry, 1/2 Anatomy done and the score in Qbank is around 70% now. Another of my friends took her exam and looked unhappy with the 84 she got. I know people wanted different things in their life, but hi, my way of thinking is: try my best and leave the result to GOD.

  #48

yes u are right...we always hope for the best. and try our best. how many subjects u have covered or how many left.. u did patho, biochem ,anat....right ... when u taking ur exam???

u are doing pretty good..

ALL THE BEST
